I expect this to become a lot more common in the coming years, with both garages and older buildings. The issue with NYC is that it is extremely difficult and time-consuming to get the city's permission to repair and maintain anything. I've heard of apartment building owners having to wait as long as 2 years for the city to approve them to replace an old roof. Just imagine trying to get approval to repair an old parking structure. Some owners will do the work in secret without telling the city, and some will get tired of waiting for approval and give give up entirely. And then there are other building owners that are just purposely negligent and never try to fix it at all. I guess we'll find out soon which category this one falls into.

comounding this bs red tape is the fact most parking structures were built and designed in a different time, when cars weighed less. Most cars today weigh significantly more than the older previous generations, especially with the trend of everyone owning an suv a truck or ev most evs weigh the same as a midsize/crossover suv in the footprint of a sedan. So these dated parking structures are all at danger of collapse from being overloaded+ add neglected maintanence is a recipe for disaster

The other problem with NYC is that many buildings are now rent controlled to the point that its simply not profitable to rent out some units because its costs significantly more to bring that unit up to code than what you can recoup from renting it out for a few years and as such those units remain empty once the tenant leaves or dies.

or maybe it's the proliferation of SUVs?
@commonsense6611

This particular parking garage was originally built in 1925 when the average vehicle weight was 1,500 lbs. I have no idea if it was ever structurally reinforced. However, the average SUV weight today = 5,000-7,000 lbs, X 50 parked on the roof would a 250,000-350,000 lb load. Those weights are even significantly higher than even the average vehicle weight of the 1990 vehicles, which = 3,000-4,000 lbs. Thus, I suspect that it was a case of the "The straw that broke the cammel's back." Now, you have to wonder... how many other structures need to come down before they fall down???

@@lifeskater9899 Not necessarily. If there had been a limit enforced on the number of vehicles parked on the levels that the concrete and structure was rated to support, this parking structure could have stood up for centuries. Look around the world at the many concrete structures built centuries ago BEFORE rebar, using straw as the strengthening addition, that are still standing today.
@id10t98
@id10t98 Жыл бұрын
No structures should 'need to come down' they simply 'need' a weight limit enforced. Concrete structures built centuries ago are still standing and this was before rebar, they used straw as their strength additive, much like fiber mesh in modern concrete today. Concrete is awesome when used for compressive stresses, not tensile and it was tensile overloading stresses on the horizontal spans of concrete that caused catastrophic failure of the rebar inside and the concrete itself. Sadly it resulted in death and injury of people. The cars dont matter.

I don’t expect NYC agencies to properly assess the cause of collapse. The Department of Buildings is a patronage and a lobby agency that serves economic interests of developers and doesn’t advance safety of NYorkers. Their “engineers” sign off paperwork on questionable construction projects and are too understaffed to properly monitor shoddy contractors and unsafe buildings.

RIP to all and may all those injured recover as fully as possible. There's a reason why concrete is 'rated' to support only a certain amount of weight before catastrophic failure takes place. I'm sure the business was parking things bumper to bumper to maximize space and profits but from the picture I've seen the supports are still standing and it is the horizontal spans that gave way, a clear indication of overloading causing tensile stress of the concrete. Just a newbie with 25+ years of experience making concrete, asphalt, sand & gravel here.

Fortunately there is a lot of hard evidence that proves it is indeed a weight issue combined with an aging infrastructure that caused its collapse. It is an issue that authorities in Australia has already identified and warning high rise parking owners, managers and car users about. Electric vehicles are not permitted in multiple story carparks here in Australia. The standards used to build multiple story carparks fail/failed to accomodate electric vehicles because the electric vehicles didn't exist. I don’t know why they think they can just let poeple pets starve and why they think they can just destroy peoples cars . People live pay check to pay check and your putting financial burden on them.

This is less a structural engineering problem and more a "I like giant cars" problem. We should consider that many "up-to-code" garages of similar design may need to be retrofitted to accommodate America's obsession with using as much gas as possible.
