Lowering a Toyota pickup, how hard could it be?
BALLJOINT FLIP AT 5 MINUTE MARK
An old car mentor of mine once said, " I've forgotten more than I'll ever know again." I think I've reached the age where I truly understand what that means.
As I've got myself back into the garage and bak to my roots in these past years, it's amazing how common knowledge challenges my old mind these days.
Anyway, in this video, I'm going to show you the issues I ran into while installing the Belltech lowering kit I purchased from Amazon, listed below.
I'm sure to a qualified installer, this was just my lack of knowledge that caused the hiccups along the way. However I figure maybe there's someone out that might have run into similar issues that will appreciate it.
So this isn't really a step-by-step guide, but more of a "sit back and laugh" at my incompetence video. Enjoy!

I have a 1991 Toyota pickup standard cab and I used the Bell Tech dropped front spindles, thicker torsion bars, sway bars and ball joint flip with great results. For the rear, I went with the Bell Tech drop leaf springs and rear sway bar. The truck handles very well even with my LS3 engine swap with a 4L60e trans. I use it as a daily driver with no issues. Keep up on your truck build. Awesome!

Definitely a learning experience. I’ve had this happen to me with some projects. It felt like someone just throws the parts at you and tells you to make it work. Glad you sorted it out. It looks like you have a Cherry Bomb glass pack for that mini truck sound 🤠🤙

Yeah for sure! as for the cherry bomb, thats a direct carryover from jeep. its my emissions exhaust set-up that moves from car to car every test time. best $40 bux you'll ever spend! HA!

The fix for the shock is to remove the top portion of the shock, slip the shock in from the bottom and reinstall the cover. Dust cove just needs to be cut with a pair of snips and just needs the 2 shorter bolts. Boom done.

Does the ball joint flip add negative or positive degree camber?
@skillset_ben
@skillset_ben Жыл бұрын
Positive, and the whole reason for doing it. My ruck lays frame currently, and these Toyotas camber slightly with this mod. Checkout my latest videos to see!🤙

You said you got the kit from Amazon. My guess is they sent you the wrong shocks. I've used BellTech kits on numerous vehicles for many years and never encountered that. However the drop spindles are commonly slightly different with fitment of surrounding components.
@skillset_ben
@skillset_ben 3 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought. However everything came sealed inside the 2 BELLTECH boxes so I don't see how? A quick phone call confirmed this. They were indeed the correct shocks for this truck and that kit, go figure? Since my problem I've had a few other people tell me the same issue, some however seem to not have this problem, but it may because of difference in the control arms themselves between years? Purely a guess.

@@skillset_ben sometimes aftermarket shocks can have a larger diameter than oem shocks. So far I've used Belltech kits on several vehicles and haven't run into any major issues. Most recently my 96 Nissan D21. Only issue was having to trim aprox 1&1/2" off the outer tie rod end to achieve alignment. You have to be able to thread the ends in quite a bit to gain a good alignment.

@@punkysanders Yup, I had a bagged and bodied 87 nissan back in the late 90s, all kind of fun tips and tricks on those trucks. I've always wanted a yota since then, so working my way there. Appreciate the input man.👊

I think it’s because how low you are when I lowered mine I had to do minor fab work to get it to fit
@skillset_ben
@skillset_ben 3 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the shock fitment? Keep in mind the truck WAS not lowered before install, no turned torsions or anything. I did the kit, then turned torsions. the shock dust boot bodies were simply too big.
