I bought one almost 3 years ago ,which was lowered and has a 4.4 liter engine (yes 4.4) but last year we got flooded and the car was under water for a few days. I will eventually get it running again but no time to even look at it. I think they are a great car.

In the USA, the Beetle ended at about 1977 (Super Beetle in 1981) because they could not meet US Safety and Exhaust requirements. But World Wide, the VW Factories were pumping Beetles out until the mid/late 1990s in Europe (German Factory) and in 2005 and 2010(?) in Brazil and Mexico respectively. In fact, The Mexcian VW Factory is restoring Bugs (rumored to be free) if you can prove you/your family are the original owners of the bug. Oddly it is not a prefect resto as they use some Mexican parts for the restoration which is not compatible with US Parts in the US. But A VW Bug Resto from VW? They need to keep this going!

Standard Beetles ended in 1977, after that was super beetle convertibles SPECIAL EDITION ONLY until the end of January 1980, for the 1979 model year. Most Mexican and Brazilian parts on German built Beetles just fine... may not be period accurate but they work! 😉👍🦆💩

And Chasing chickens. LOL I got a dozen chickens or more. We got too many eggs right now. I can always have some eggs for breakfast. So thats good. Eggs have no fat so I can eat them all I want to. I used those KYB shocks on my Ranger pIck up I do recommend them. I like to wipe grease on the outside of the bearing and fill the hub cap full of grease too so it will work its way in and also it will help it stay lubed instead of getting dry. Yes that tie rod will eventually become a big probelm for sure. My truck rides like a lumber wagon I should take a litlle bit of the pressure off the torque rods but it will change the alighnment. I am too cheap to have it realigned. Good thing you caught the air cooled pipes comming off before it melted down the rings. I like how your not afraid to remove the motor you aint scared.

Type 3 only metal on metal noise That Fasty and Notch owners of the group don't don't get to hear (before you go through all that heavy work) The upper fresh air tubes (one each side) Screwed to the underside of the cylinder head tin. Where the cooling tin makes a 90 degree bend down towards the ground the end of the upper fresh air tube comes through a hole in the tin. The sound is the tube vibrating in the hole in the tin. With some luck IRS (automatics only) guys later rear engine mount can do oil cooler seals without taking the engine out. Work was done at a KOA campground. So with any luck you can torque the heads without taking the heavy lump out. Raise the rear of the body after unbolting the rear engine mount. Sometimes the body will come up enough on its own

Thanks, but that will likely break the front transmission mount on this automatic. But I'll try a few things before I commit to complete engine removal.

Hey Duckman did you leave the details of the KYBs? Also quick tip for removing the torsion arm, just loosen the retaining bolt on the other side (or put a longer bolt in) and hit it with a hammer, pops the torsion bar right out much easier than trying to lever it off from the same side. Regards

Thanks man, but I don't understand the first question. And as far as hitting the torsion from the bolt side... yeah if it's stuck I have. But I wouldn't just loosen it and hit it otherwise because you're probably going to screw up the threads. I have used a longer bolt in that location just so I could thread it in and bottom it out so as not to mangle anything. That works well!

im not sure if you mention this in the video, may have missed it but looks like 3 rims are 5.5 inches wide and rhe rear passenger is 4.5 inches. squareback looks great just kinda weird with the wide rims up front.

I think I'd have pulled the torsion bar out of the drivers side lower arm and put anti-sieze in that spline.

I had a 70 sq. I could sware i moved the top arm 2 splines, not the bottom arm. Worked, any thoughts on that?

I don't remember there being any splines on the top. The internal sway bar lives in the top and has tablet-shaped shaft ends for all years that there were Type-3. Maybe you had something custom? 😁👍🦆💩

As long as the torque converter is left in place (mechanics strapping diagonal across the bell housing) works well Index the torque converter flex plate before unbolting so the orientation remains the same ISP west sells fan shroud block offs. I've heard the arguments for keeping fresh air tubes and heater boxes for over 30 years. I use large wrench in freeze plugs using a large hose clamp to keep the fan housing from spreading. I worked 38 I-95 miles from home 5/6 days a week. I got my 73 automatic square-back for two hundred dollars because the previous owner put on an after market exhaust without blocking off the fan shroud

Thanks, I am going to leave them together. I have no reason to separate engine from transmission in this instance. But I will likely plug the fan shroud same as you recommend. That should do it nicely! Thanks man!

Brother, every time you blast one of those bolts with your drill you are far exceeding the torque spec... thats why the breaker bar instantly breaks because a 22ftlb bolt already had 100lb's on it.. you gotta be careful with those lol

Years ago a friend of mine who owned a body shop had a square back he made a pickup it was in the world of wheels it was black with flamesŵhere the rear bumper was was a custom rolled pan that was like a spoiler that the bottom came to a point and it was all molded and said ugly trucking it was really neat it changed hands a few times and something to do with a brain or something went out and was a part that was not east to find or cost to much but it wouldn't run anymore is there something with those engines that makes it hard to get parts for I remember he called it a pancake engine. Also today I was by my buddy's shop he is building a vw with a Subaru engine in it said its going to be about 400 hp.

Thanks Richard! The engine is about the same as a Beetle engine, just the cooling tins and generator are different. Otherwise all the same inside. Subaru would be awesome... maybe someday! Thanks again!
