$2500?? no way. maybe if you bought all the tools and decor. just the deck materials would be like $500-ish. i'm doing something slightly larger and estimating around $700.

great video! the base for the floating deck is what i'll use for my project soon. I wanted to build a little gazebo at my family home rooftop but i didnt want to drill into the walls or the tiled floor (its almost 50 years old). Any ideas would be appreciated! The only somewhat supporting structure would be one wall.

Joists are various widths.. if you want a flat deck, line the top of each one up with the top of the cross-member, then attach the hanger. You can screw another board on top of the joist and hang it on the cross-member while you attach the joist hanger.

11:40 You never know if your joists are all the same height. Usually there are minor differences. So it's better not to pre-attach the joist hangers. Use the joist you want to place at that specific point, line it's top up to the beam and attach the hanger. Go on using the next piece of wood.

I would love to build something similar, but I am wondering if the structure will stay level over time without sunken footings.

Stejay it can stay level for years, if done right. Check your local building codes. There are limits to height and weight of deck when using surface footings, along with what needs to be under the footing, also joist, beam, post, and framing layout as this spreads weight evenly over the footings.

Stejay no prob! Just for example here locally you can do a deck on surface footings with a maximum height of 4’ above the normal grade as long as it’s freestanding (not attached to the house), and they have a recommended way of placing and laying the footings, on gravel, plus all the recommendations on framing the deck. In fact, here we can even do a pergola on surface footings (a correct pergola without a solid roof, i.e. it doesn’t have a solid roof that would hold snow.) Note there are also rules on how close to buildings, fences, and property lines.

This looks like harder ground, more clay content, like up north. If doing this in Florida or more sandy areas, go with some poured cement footers, or else it will for sure sink unevenly.

Great video, thanks!! One note: Wouldn’t it be better to stretch your tape from end to end to mark your 16” intervals instead of marking each from the last? I believe your way may allow for cumulative error from one end to the other.
