Lowkey has been campaigning for Palestine for many years. All his songs are for the liberation of peoples' minds, calling out colonisers and shining a light on the things they try to conceal. He is also an activist. I would say pick any song of his and it is worth the listen, but especially check out Long Live Palestine. He has three parts, listen to them all.

LOWKEY is the OG. He is the reason a young boy (myself) 14 years ago became a staunch supporter of Palestinian freedom. He is ahead of the curve and mind you, back then it was very lonely to be a Palestinian supporter. There was only a handful of people really aware of what was going on. Fast forward now, and I am glad supporting Palestine has gone mainstream like it should be.

When you mentioned el hilm al arabi, I suddenly remembered that I'd scoured the internet for years for this song but I could neither remember the title nor the majority of the words since I was a kid when I heard it, so I gave up. Then you said the title and the bulb lit in my head. Also regarding Mohammad el Durra, that haunts me to this day as well. I was very young when it happened, and this is I remember, when I realized that it meant something else to be palestinian.

I loved hearing in your last video that you’re Lebanese, here in Melbourne, Australia growing up in the 80s and 90s there were often Lebanese kids at school, but I didn’t really understand until making friends with a Lebanese family as an adult. These young men were super creative, into music, sound production and dj-ing, as well as eating really good food. When we all hung out they were always giggling and doing funny versions of belly dances and constantly saying habibi… I was shocked to find out they had had bombs dropping around them, and also intrigued that they explained how beautiful and cosmopolitan their city was. In my ignorance I didn’t know that their city was lovable and beautiful until they told me, and also was floored imagining the trauma of bombing. That’s how I first found out Israel was doing these things, from these amazing humans. Anyway if people don’t believe Palestinians about what Israel does, perhaps they never listened to any Lebanese people either. You and your people are full of beauty and spirit, thank you for your heartfelt reactions and free Palestine!

Lowkey and Mai Khalil have worked together before and it's always heartwrenching, but we can't ignore these things just because they hurt. And the reason he's not that well known is because he wrote a song critical of the US government, Rush Limbaugh called him a terrorist, he called them out again, he got raided at home, all his electronics taken and essentially blackballed. But he won't obey, he writes for the wronged people, stepped on by those with power. Ahmed, Sunday Morning and Ghosts of Grenfell are great examples alongside the songs I mentioned before and this one.

If we can celebrate a song in Farsi about liberation, about women, life, freedom. Freedom from oppression and persecution by a tyrannical regime. A song that shows how the poetic nature of the Persian language and the depth of feeling expressed by the singer. Why can't we have the same celebration over a song in Arabic, also beautifully poetic and expressive, about the liberation of Palestinians? Why are there covers of Baraye? Why the critical acclaim? Why did it win the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2023, where the song won the first-ever special merit award for Best Song for Social Change? Are the women and children of Iran more deserving of freedom than the 5M Palestinians of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, or the 2M second class Palestinian citizen of Israel? Who knows that 'From The River To The Sea' had origins in the liberation movements of the late 1960s, early 1970s? Meaning freedom and liberation for all, Palestinian and Israeli alike? A secular democratic state with equal rights for all? To say it isn't is the same as saying 'Black Lives Matter,' 'Black Power,' 'Black Is Beautiful' slogans of social justice movements are really terror slogans of 'Black Identity Extremists' as categorized by the FBI. Who knows that the region suffers oppression from autocratic regimes propped up by alliances with former colonial powers? Who knows that dissent is met with violence, imprisonment, and disappearances? Who knows that the one slogan on the Arab street that is allowed is 'From The River To The Sea?' That everyone knows that the marchers are not just talking about Palestinian liberation, but their own? Now tell me 'From The River To The Sea' is anti-Semitic. Yes, Operation Iraqi Liberation was as inventive as the CIA's plan to overthrow Fidel Castro, Operation ORTSAC. But then we overthrew secular nationalist Arab leaders who threatened to, you know, take back their own resources? How'd that turn out? Israel, the only democracy in the region? Oh, please, they aren't and we deposed or assassinated those that were. I hope I can find a stream of the documentary 'Israelism.' I have a feeling that is going to be an important film to spread awareness. Resistance is to occupation is a right founded in international law, and yet when peaceful demonstrations like The Great March of Return are met by bullets the lesson is the same one Nelson Mandela learned, it isn't enough. Which is why he founded uMkhonto we Sizwe - Spear of the Nation, the paramilitary body of the African National Congress. Ireland's Sinn Féin had the Irish Republican Army and Gerry Adams. Both labeled terrorists until their liberation, yes, there were excesses by the paramilitaries, shameful, criminal. Yet the paramilitaries disbanded after liberation, then their political bodies became ruling powers. Is this lesson not learned? Sadly even a Palestinian-American journalist has no value, there is no justice for Shireen Abu Akleh, this is again the 'Palestinian Exception' for the US. When diplomacy and our 'friends' or our 'enemies' are really about lying and the 'International Poker Game where everyone is cheating' and it's all about power advantages. Who are we? When will we realize it is unsustainable? Came here for Ren, stayed and subbed for Palestine!
