Nick. I received my Provent - 25 and have finally fitted it.Well although the Dmax 2015 & 2017 look similar under the bonnet heres what is the difference Pre & Post DPF. They have changed contour of one brake line from ABS controller. The air cleaners look similar but are different. The air intake to the Turbo is slightly different and the PCV inlet is in a slightly different spot to the turbo from the air box. The Maf sensor wiring to the air box runs differently. Catch can is now fitted and looks good and works fine and can change my fuel filter easily although be warned it is a tight fit..Heres what I modified to fit.A brake line I had to gently bend towards the firewall slightly. Cut of a small plastic lug on the air box which held a clip for MAF wiring ( No biggy) to fit the bracket and can in place.A small adjustment to the bracket when in place for clearance for the can.The hose from the breather to the top of the can fits OK. The cans bottom hose to the turbo inlet pipe I used the old PCV hose ( Left it on the turbo inlet) and a piece of 5/8 copper tube to join it to the new bottom hose from the catch can. Make sure the catch can and bracket dont touch or rub on the brake reservoir. I must admit for a while I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew and had blown$320.. But I am happy with the end result. By the way Nick where you looped the drain hose back with a cable tie and cut it to emptyI I was able to run mine on and the tap now sits just below my RH fog light inside the bumper and I just reach inside the bumper and pull it out and it s protected as well..Cheers

Have ran a Provent 200 on my 3.0L BT50 for 6 years now. They are a solid unit and compared to alot of the others out there they do a really good job of catching that oil mist. So you definitely won't be disappointed with your choice. Recently got the wife a MUX and was going to put a Provent on it also as the one on the ute has worked flawlessly. Then found that Isuzu do a genuine catch can for there NPR series trucks so grabbed one of them instead to compare. Really well built and only $115 for the unit and $15 for replacement filters as opposed to the provents $80 filter. Really keen to see how they compare side by side.

Nick I have a 2015 Dmax from new and have decided to fit a Provent 200 catchcan and the one for my pre DPF D Max is a Prov-26 where as yours with the DPF is the Prov-25 which mounts near the air filter out of the way of the factory fuel filter. I phoned Western Filters and asked the question if I could fit the Prov 25 and they werent sure but after watching your video and comparing the underbonnet factory bolt holes ( Mine are vacant) I am sure I can fit your Prov -25 kit which doesnt clutter up the fuel filter area. Great work & explanation with that video Nick, Its a nice install & piece of kit by the look of it. I did notice that the loop on the drain hose would not fill all the way as the accumulated oil would air-lock if you know what I mean. Not a big deal just pointing it out. I will work on getting one for my Penguin (105 Series) Land-cruiser. I like the way you present Nick & for a layman mechanic like me who wants to learn to do the work on my car, i really appreciate the efforts you go to to make it simple to follow. Watching you videos gives me the confidence to do the jobs myself, save money & know that it has been done correctly. CASE IN POINT - I’m not great with electrical stuff & went to an auto electrician last week who did not resolve my dash-lights issue, got the Penguin back home only to find that the plastics had been poorly aligned around the steering column & if that was not bad enough, they forced a self-tapping screw into where a machine threaded screw should go when they reassembled the dash & column.
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Leigh! Thats frustrating about the auto electrician, it is hard to find good tradesmen. The Ball valve on the drain tube is not a perfect seal so i was thinking it will let enough air out to allow the oil to fill. Either way I always monitor my vehicle regularly and I can open the valve to let the air out and the oil drain down further if necessary. I'll just have to see how it goes. 😊👍 thanks for the comment 😊

It's a good idea for engine longevity and for keeping the intake nice and clean. My mu-x has about 26,000km on it now and there was a minor oily film in the hoses so at 16,000km your intake should be quite clean and the catch can will definately help keep it that way 😊

Top video Nick as always. I've heard differing opinions as to the importance of these, and one lingering question is if these were detrimental to engine reliability and longevity, why don't vehicle manufacturers fit one as standard? Thanks
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
I think the reason they don't fit them from factory is due to cost saving and the fact that its not necessary for the engine to operate. Also, it is unlikely to see issues with the intake blocking and causing issues within the warranty period so they have no reason to spend the extra money on it. Catch cans are fitted to trucks from factory. The isuzu trucks also run them from factory. A catch can is not a necessary thing, but if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time and want to look after the intake system it will definately reduce the need for costly repairs down the track. ie blocked intake from carbon build up, split intercooler hoses from being oil soaked and blocked/inefficient intercooler. 😊

Thats awesome! Im not a fan of the munji cables. I have my egr turned off in the ecu.
@CRN80915 жыл бұрын
LowRangeNick any particular reason you don’t like the munji cable?.
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
@@CRN8091 The munji egr delete cable tampers with an important ecu input. The intake air temperature/airflow meter. This input to the ecu is very important for it to be able to calculate the temperature and how dense the air is to be able to manage the correct amount fuel to be injected at any time. The munji cable falcifies this temperature reading telling the ecu that it is -2 degrees ALL The time. In turn keeping the egr valve closed because the ecu thinks that it is very cold outside and it needs to warm up the engine quicker, this also causes the ecu to inject more fuel then necessary because it is constantly thinking that it is -2 degrees. The other fact is that they also say on the newer models that they are unsure if it even closes the valve correctly as they havnt performed the correct tests. I have no confidence in a cable that is falcifying an important live data signal to the ecu and that also hasnt even been proved or tested correctly. I have my egr valve turned off in the ecu, it is 100% closed all of the time. I can see using the scan tool that it is closed and it is not effecting an important sensor signal to my ecu. So i am confident that I am never going to have any issues. 😊 hope that makes sense 👍🛠

LowRangeNick I’ve read mixed reviews on them, I have one and my eds scanner says the intake air temp is 2degrees when it’s plugged in.I also read you have higher exhaust gas temps when using them.i notice my engine coolant temp goes up 2degrees when it’s plugged in also.Think I will unplug it!. Thanks for the reply as always.

Hi Nick, thanks for this great video. just a quick question. I fitted Provent catch can on my MUX and the MUX feels very heavy now while driving. Any idea why?
@TahjmaRahj8 ай бұрын
Hey nick I recently installed a catch can on my 2015 dmax and since installing I’ve noticed a ‘thump’ noise when I start it up. Any ideas? I thought maybe added pressure from catch can causing throttle valve to open more aggressively? Car runs fine once started but thump noise every time I start car. Thanks let me know what you think!

Hey mate just wondering if I could put a oil catch can in a v6 Petrol hilux?
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can, it works on the exact same principal and will reduce all of that oil going through your intake.

Hi Nick How often do I need to drain the oil from The drain hose ? Thx
@LowRangeNick4 жыл бұрын
Every 5k or so.
@einfelder82625 жыл бұрын
You need to cut off the excess drain hose and have the tap at the bottom, for easy opening without faffing around cutting cable ties to do it. I would also add a stay to the top mount as that bracket had too much wobble. A trip to the cape over the corrugations will see that bracket snap off.
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
The catch cans oil catching capacity is dependent on the length of the drainage tube. If you shorten the hose then you will have to drain the catch can more often and monitor it more regularly. I've got no problem cutting 1 zip tie and draining it haha. The bracket does have a little bit of movement before the hoses go on. After all the hoses go onto the catch can it stiffens everything up and there is basicly no movement at all. Cheers 👍
@einfelder82625 жыл бұрын
@@LowRangeNick You're not going to fill the last 6" of the hose anyway, it's pointing upwards. As soon as the curve at the bottom fills up, the last bit will stay full of air. That's why you may as well cut it shorter.

Hi Nick enjoy watching your vids especially since i just bought a d max rider, What are the catch cans worth why did you chose this brand and roughly a price on replacement filters , keep up the good work very informative to help us novices make decisions
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! The catch cans are about $380, this comes with everything you need to install it. I chose this kit because of where it mounts in the engine bay. I want to fit a secondary fuel filter down the track so wanted to keep that other side free. Replacement filters are about $30. 😊

Great video Nick, I’m having trouble removing the original DPD bracket. What sort of socket wrench did you use to remove the two factory bolts on the base? They seem to be in an awkward space to access for my inexpert hands.
@LowRangeNick4 жыл бұрын
They should be 2 x 10mm bolts. A long extension and 1/4 drive ratchet works well.

Hey just a question i got . I have a 2010 dmax 3l turbo deisel dual cab is there anyway i could change the location of the fuel filter from the passenger to under the bonnet and where its located it keeps bumping the wire connector undernearth it . Any help in this situation would be awesome its in a stupid spot .
@LowRangeNick4 жыл бұрын
Is it a factory fuel filter or a secondary filter? In both cases you could move it if needed but you would have to make up a custom mounting bracket/lines etc. Can you space the bracket up a bit with some washers to stop it hitting on the wiring?

does fitting these catch cans void any possible warranty on Ur vehicle??
@LowRangeNick5 жыл бұрын
Only if the catch can is the direct cause of the failed part that is going to be covered under warranty.
@MiniLuv-19845 жыл бұрын
Adam, as I see it (and I'm neither a qualified mechanic nor a lawyer), it's as Nick says - if a catch can blocks the path of gasses from the engine to the air intake then it could cause bottom end seals to blow on the engine. You notice this one that Nick is using has pressure relief valves on both intake and outlet of the catch can to avoid this situation. If seals do blow on the engine then good luck getting a warranty claim if you have any catch can fitted, because all they have to do is claim that the the catch can failed causing excessive pressure in the sump which then took out the seal(s). However any other fault condition, not attributable to a blocked PCV system that occurs is unlikely to be attributable to the catch can, so you should not have other warranty claims turned down on the basis of a catch can, but, *unfortunately that depends on the ethics of the dealer/manufacturer* to a great degree. Some are good, some are atrocious - criminal in fact...if you are concerned for your own vehicle, ascertain the reputation of your vehicle manufacturer and their dealer network first. I'd personally steer away from a catch can design that can block the flow of vapour under any circumstances. Some try to avoid this with pressure relief valves, others just ignore the possibility as sell you a ticking time bomb. The ones with pressure relief valves are a step in the right direction, but the valves themselves are also are at risk of failure you are adding to your vehicle.

@@MiniLuv-1984 You're welcome to stay away from a catch can, and very noble of you to compliment the Provent as a "step in the right direction". I personally trust the engineers at Provent, a MASSIVE company built on supplying the world with these devices, rather than your humble opinion. My advice to diesel owners is to fit a Provent catch can as the first modification as soon as you buy it. My Patrol had more blowby from new than it does now at 80,000k, because the engine is still in running in phase as far as the rings are concerned. I fitted the Provent at 5000k and the intercooler, etc was already dripping with oil. My second piece of advice is dismiss the opinion of those who can't comprehend the merit of a catch can because they are wrong. Third piece of advice is only use Provent

How many kms did it take initially to start seeing oil in the drainage tube? I’ve done about 1200km with it on now and still bugger all in the drainage tube. Maybe that’s a good thing that my engine isn’t breathing too badly!
@LowRangeNick4 жыл бұрын
Takes about 3-5000km for oil to start showing in the drain tube. The filter has to become soaked and then it will allow the oil to drain down.
