This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from December 16, 2012, features an interview with Mickey Gilley conducted by Beth Courtney. Gilley, a native of Ferriday, is a country singer best known for such hits as “Room Full of Roses” and “Don’t the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time.” He discusses: growing up in Ferriday with his famous cousins, Jimmy Swaggart and Jerry Lee Lewis; how a New York Times article about his Texas nightclub, Gilley’s, led to John Travolta starring in the movie “Urban Cowboy,” which is based on his club; the addition of the mechanical bull to his nightclub; the old Gospel music he played in church; recording his first hit, “Room Full of Roses,” at age 38; signing with Playboy Records; touring with Conway Twitty; issues with his business partner at Gilley’s; his move to Branson, Missouri; the musical group that now leases his theater; the traumatic fall that left him paralyzed; his performance “Life Story in Music”; and his current relationship with his cousins.

I used to go to Mickey Gilleys bar in the 70s and 80’s the first time I went I was eight years old in 1971. My dad would teach me how to Country western dance and I grew up going.. my dad knew Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, other regular singers from the Gillie’s bar… in the 70s is the first time I saw Tanya Tucker, I also got to see Conway Twitty, Meryl Haggard, Willie Nelson and many other amazing country singers. My dad used to go to the bar every weekend and never miss dancing with a pretty girl. It was nice to see this documentary my father just passed away (6/2022) and this just reminds me of him. Thank you

I was listening to his greatest hits this afternoon on Alexa everywhere as I was cleaning rooms in my house and thought I got to find me a documentary on him. Love his music. Takes me back to my Texan roots in the 80s as a teen. Loved the movie Urban Cowboy forever! Sending love from the State of Washington city of Lacey. ♥️♥️🤠

He has never lost the Ferriday accent! I love it. My grandmother's people from up that way and I do believe Mickey was best known as an iconic musician and the owner of venues like Gilley's Club in Pasadena, Texas, and the Mickey Gilley Grand Shanghai Theatre in Branson, Mo. Unfortunately, he died on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at the age of 86.

@@brendaniebel1355 Okay I got ya. That's what I thought you meant. Just making sure. And as for being a piano player, I think Jerry Lee was more of an entertainer than a great musician. He was great but on stage he was more of an entertainer. Gilley had more of an elegant, smoother way of playing (for lack of a better description). Made it look effortless. On a side note: I think Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best piano player ever in the popular/Rock n Roll/Bluesy genre of music. Classically trained as well. 10xs better than Jerry. But more people have heard of Jerry Lee Lewis than Powell. Go figure. Lol.
