It's so much fun listening and watching my old friend John Santos. Although I've never been to his house or met his family, I call him friend because he's a true mench. That's a Yiddish term to say righteous brother. He would never stab someone in the back to get a gig. We came up together in the first Samba Festival around Precita Park, San Francisco. Then at the Haight Ashberry music store where I sold my bells and John was a salesperson I observed his patience with customers, coming of course from his love for the music and his upbringing. It was a complete surprise to hear his music on the radio for I had gone into teaching in the public school while John researched, studied, and grew musically as a player and composer. The world is a better place with John Santos teaching us the music. May his strength be increased.

I love it how the act of love (in this case for music) brings out such richness out of a phenomenaly simple instrument. Beautiful! Thank you for posting!

The video is incredible. Talk about Hand eye hearing, coordination. Just amazing. My left hand is not wanting to work right. Lol. But also when listening and look away what he is doing sounds different, look back at what he is doing the sound is different. This is so totally cool. Trying to follow him, lol. That is so much harder than it looks lol. This person below is awesome at the marachas. It is also a excellent example between rattles and growth. Music has so much to teach, so much to strengthen. The basic senses. It's so awesome also lb kinds of different music. Instruments. Etc.

He is correct in that the maracas are an integral part of afro-cuban, puerto rican and dominican music, and many other latin american region's music, but, what he doesn't indicate is that the maracas are actually a native american instrument which is even more integral to native american music and rituals and which has been adapted into what is now known as latin american music. Maracas are not originally an african instrument as many would claim but actually, native american...

Actually they are Taino instruments that were used for religious purposes they are native to the Caribbean they could've been brought over to the native americans as i believe that there were Tainos in Florida.

Nicely done John ! I heard some Joropo too, the Venezuelano rhythms and techniques blow me away, those Maracas de Coco are tight for intricate rhythms, a bit different than the Lp large bulb maracas w/ heavier plastic filler material that you demonstrated very well. I often dis assemble the rawhide maracas to experiment with different filler like small crushed rock used for fish aquariums for particular size and type of maraca shell bodies.

Thanks! I never knew... love music but it shouldn't be technical or difficult. I've struggled with the guitar for years.. big commitment if you're not a natural. I picked up the 'drum roll' technique you show here.. after practicing I actually sound pretty good!.. and it has a very zen/meditation relaxation effect. I bought small wooden ones on sale to start with.. just ordered a pair of natural hide Pearls from Sam Ash.. subscribed and liked!
