That's one of the main reason's they're such a great musical comedy act. Their music is genuinely enjoyable. I find a lot of comedic songs by lesser performers lean way too much on the novelty of their jokes, and the songs themselves just get annoying as a result. If you have jokes but can't write a good song to deliver them, then just tell the jokes. Don't make us endure bad music as part of the package :/

This song made me realise how good they are. Not only is it funny, but it's also poignant, bittersweet, hopeful, sad, it's multi-layered. The music also underlines the lyric, verses being happy go lucky and carefree as he describes how all these people found ways to leave him, the pause in mentioning Carol Brown's departure, like THAT'S the one that hurt him the most, of all the departures, then the chorus choir which just slams the point home. It's a beautifully written song, at a level that rivals Ray Davies (The Kinks) for arrangement, lyric and taking something seemingly ordinary and making it those things mentioned above .. funny, poignant, bittersweet, hopeful, sad. It's in denial and self aware at the same time. One of my favourite songs in the universe. They deserved recognition for this one creation, if any of the many really great tunes they've written. But this one. This one's at another level.

the "instruments" that the boys are playing are extremely old school video-editing machines on guitars. While Jemaine is playing that "instrument" he's editing the video that is playing in the background, then when Brett comes out and plays his "instrument", he's editing the video of Jemaine. Accompanied by the hilarity & beauty of the song this is definitely one of my favorutie things from FOTC.

Michel Gondry directed this episode so it was his concept for this "video" of having the band seemingly produce their own video while performing the song, given it's effectively a narration of the singer's past. Very clever! But probably only spotted by people who've been in video editing suites. Those boxes were probably worthless garbage at the time they were props for this scene but they were very expensive back in the day.

"I've lived here, 'cause every time I'm on the phone with my mom she says I sound like marilyn monroe. - Did you catch that? - What are you deaf? Marilyn monroe. - Oh, marilyn monroe. - Yeah. - What about her? - I talk like her now. - She sounds like her. - She does sound a bit like her. Yeah, I suppose if you squint your ears"

The most sad flight of the Concorde song, especially when you consider this is a fantasy sequence which means this is all jermaine doing this to himself. Every criticism from the girlfriends is everything he thinks about himself.

Brilliant song. Maybe this is common knowledge but Sia Furler is listed as being on the chorus background vocals of this song. Also he is playing an old-timey video editor. I remember it from a tv studio where I worked. It was when video was not fully digital yet. Those round knobs would fast forward and back through the tape to find your in and out points. Crazy analogue 90s.

i know its just a comedy song but it really speaks tp how your exes stay in your head and add to relationship anxiety you know and i feel like the subtext of the song is about learning to ignore those voices and believe you can be loved so that the anxiety doesn’t ruin a real chance for a relationship. or maybe im overthinking it?
