Well my home city of Perth is on a 4 day lockdown and I cant fly to work. So I thought I'd jump into rebuilding my spare air suspension compressor for my Land Rover Discovery 3. This is the earlier Hitachi model as I haven't changed over to the AMK.
This one had excessive wear to the piston glide ring that eventually wore the barrel (cylinder) out. When it originally failed I ordered a basic rebuild kit but only discovered the wear when stripping it down the first time and at that point I ordered a complete new compressor.
I'm getting to the point where I should be doing a desiccant changeout on the current compressor but figured I would have this one ready to go and just do a swap out. I can then get the next one ready for a swap out in the future.

At time of uploading there was a limited availability of these, they are getting more and more uncommon so I would think at some point the old compressors are going to end up unrepairable. In order to avoid that make sure you maintain your air compressor - throw a new set of seals into it when you do your desiccant every few years.

You missed pulling the electric motor cover off and giving a good blast off with Contact Cleaner while you are there. They are filled with carbon dust and you can give the brushes a bit of light sand paper. Worth doing although I learnt this news also after doing a rebuild on mine. I've done it on a spare unit and its a simple job.

Greetings from cold Canada, I know this is a bit late, but I spilled my desiccant on my workshop floor so I regenerated the old desiccant in a 3-minute high microwave and then for 1 hour at 350 F

Thanks for the comment Mark, that would certainly work to dry it out. Many industrial air dryers I’ve worked around do a similar thing. Regen using hot air in a reverse flow through the dryer

Hammering that aluminium piston against the edges of steel vice jaws made me wince. Use a wooden block at least.

Yep, I deserve that comment😄 But on the flip side it’s not like these things are exactly a precision setup as they are fairly rough considering how much a new one costs

I’m not sure is the piston seal was poor quality or I’ve damaged it, but the seal didn’t last long with this particular rebuild. I have a brand new unit on its way then I’ll rebuild this one again as a spare

Thanks for the video! The dual metal plate round filter with all the little holes in it is filled with that old crusty white powder do I need to remove it all before I refit

Doesn’t hurt to give it a wash out. When the dust migrates it’s way into the solenoid valves they can start to leak.

@Shanes_Shed it seems if you clean it out entirely then there's no way for the new 0 ring to sit around anything.. I'f u know what I mean it would just be loose

There's a filter pad between the metal plates - From memory the factory filter has a rivet holding them together. In the past I've separated the two plates and put in a new filter pad - then bolted them together with a new oring.

Hey mate, just bought a v8 SE 2005 D3. You videos are great, heaps of good detail. Mines got low kms but as soon as I bought it, it’s already needing a couple of coils so figured a good idea to get into the rest of the maintenance stuff too. Probably should check the pump! How did you know yours needed a rebuild of more of a cautionary thing?

So glad the people are finding my videos usefull, thank you for the kind words. This particular pump just failed to build pressure and at the time I just ordered the normal rebuild kit before I pulled it out. Once I stripped it however I found the bad wear in the piston and cylinder - thought Id attempt the new rings/seals but they failed so I ordered a complete replacement compressor as I needed to be 100% sure of having everything working.
