Land Rover Discovery 3 steering rack rebuild. This is a two part video series, in this first video I'll be stripping down the rack to its individual components. Rebuilding your own rack is rewarding and a much cheaper option than either purchasing a complete new rack or getting someone else to rebuild it for you.

Mate ive got the knipex multigrips and have never looked back but that wrench spanner is the next thing

Yeah it was frustrating at first, but I wasn't totally out of ideas, just didn't have the right tooling for the job at the time.

Those little picks are extremely useful for many many tasks. Sharp as buggery though I've gaffed myself a few times.

Had to buy them for this job - used to have a set years back when I was working on the tools but they got misplaced. Haven't had a real good reason to buy more until rebuilding this rack

I have a RR Sport (Lr3 components) . My rack has a big free movement (3 - 4 cm on the steering wheel ) . There is no free movement at the steering column . The balls and joints are tight . Is it possible to tighten the rack ? Great video ... (Jostein , Norway)

Theres not really any adjustment that I can see in the rack. The only thing thats close is the lock stop I removed from 06:57 I guess a combination of worn bushes on the rack and a loose spring could allow the rack to move away from the pinion gear under load

As always Shane, thanks again. Appreciate you sharing your experiences. Think we will have to buy you a 7/16” flare nut spanner! Where did you get the seal kit for the rack?

Yeah all mine are metric, and I didn't even think at the time to try a standard imperial spanner. Seal kit came from a local rebuilder in Perth, Lucas power steering. I'll cover all those details a bit more in a separate video

Did you have any symptoms beyond oil leak ? I have a v8 lr4 with nearly 200k and steering hard when manoeuvring at very low parking speed. I don't see leaks though.

No it was just the leak for me
