The Steely Dan comparison is so apt. The first time I heard LRB "It's Not a Wonder" (and those gorgeous twin-lead guitar harmonies) it reminded me of SD guitarists Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias back in 1973. Sonic perfection!

Diamantina Cocktail, still one of my favorite all time albums. I saw them , on what I think was their first tour, in Florida. They had the best sounding Strats, as I remember.

Interesting about Glenn. Glenn Frey called LRB the best harmonizing band on the planet. High praise from the Eagles member, who harmonized beautifully themselves. Thanks John.

True what your saying but remember glenn was the lead singer🤔🤔 the harmonies were mainly done by graham goble n beeb birtles in the little river band🤔 in all due respect glenn was still a great singer but not really trained musically🤔 i think this is the point here..

This is probably far more common in bands than most people realize.

What I liked about the REAL LRB was Glen Shorrock's voice. Even a change in vocalist "no matter how good" could never make the band any more popular. After the change of singer to John Farnham the version of LRB lost it real sound. This is my personal view

Glenn just had that something about him and his voice. John Farnham did not really add anything to the band, despite the fact he may be considered to be a better vocalist by many.

John had his own style & liked to over sing too much, alone though he was a great entertainer, singer.

Great interview. Really appreciate how you let Graham elaborate on his thoughts when so many interviewers try to interrupt.

I absolutely loved this band back in the day. They could do no wrong. So interesting that they had this sort of struggle. Crazy. Probably a reason they didn't keep it together. And watching Derek on drums was fascinating. One of the best concerts I ever attended.

Graeham seems to lack insight here. Sure Steely Dan might have endlessly polished stuff, but what about Sinatra who always tried for first takes to get feel? What about arguments between Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies of Supertramp having the same argument about spontaneity vs polish. And plenty of other examples. To suggest it is a lack of skill by Glen, while recognising what his warm rapport did for the band, is a contradiction. And the final judgement is surely what happened to LRB without Glen.

So often, the "outside guy" see the song the way the audience would. And its quite a thing to resolve.

This situation is not uncommon. Most bands I have played in are largely comprised of people who sing or play and instrument but have not real interest in nor knowledge of music. And that applies at the part-time and the professional level. Some players just want to play, they don't want to think or need to 'work'. That possibly comes from the fact that most musicians aren't creative - they copy the works of others or play by rote. The exceptions - Jeff Beck, Sting, Kate Bush....the individualists - are the standouts because they (i) have the imagination, (ii) have developed their skills, and (iii) are willing to put the work into realising their vision.

The “everyman” sound that LRB had in all their songs was sort of exemplified by Glenn’s performance on stage. It translated perfectly. But in the end the music is where the magic is, and that “everyman” sound in the harmonies are due to the band’s effort not just one person’s effort.

I don't know. Without Goble's songwriting, Shorrock may have never found himself popular.

It's true in away, having a singer that plays a instrument you usually don't have that type of situation.

This is such a shame. Glenn Shorrock had a wonderful voice and his treatment of the music of the Little River Band was amazing, but for there to be this strife within the group spoiled something special. How many bands actually have commercial success? As a musician, I know it must have been baffling and tremendously disappointing to the rest of the band.
@letsgobrandon5800
@letsgobrandon5800 Жыл бұрын
Why disappointing? Glenn’s tenure in the band took them to heights they previously had not known or haven’t since. Glenn could do it in just a few takes. Everyone’s different.

Graeme is NOT passing judgement on Glenn here, other than to the extent things fell short of his idea of what "absolute perfection" would have been like. That's the way Graeme's mind works - meticulous about detail, which by definition must include being honest (and he does so, diplomatically) about the musical dynamic they had with one another.

Well, then again LRB was much bigger than steely dan, so there's that....and very sad you felt the need to gather together to bash someone you rode the coat tails of. Smooth

I like Graeme, he seems like such a likeable, straight up, accepting, and honest bloke. Glenn Shorrock, however, portrays himself as resentful and a very bitter man who won't accept his part in losing the LRB name when he (according to Graeme himself) sold his share despite knowing it had value, and continues to blame every man and his son. In my opinion, Glenn Shorrock was always a very bland singer at the best without a great vocal range nor a unique voice. Graeme said in a response that Glenn couldn't sing the songs he wrote when John Farnham was lead singer while John Farnham effortlessly sang the Glenn Shorrock LRB songs.
@teresa6775
@teresa6775 Жыл бұрын
That's asinine. LRB isn't LRB without Glenn and Farnham was an over-singer wannbe. To say Glenn is a "bland singer" completely contradicts LRB's success when GLENN was the singer, not the baby wannabe. Yes, Farnham is a good singer, but not LRB material.
