I usually just listen tp Cajun music, most other music these days is pure trash, but the amazing Fureys and some other Irish bands, I listen to for many hours and find so unbelievably strong and moving. These sounds will still be listened to and appreciated, when so called superstars are long forgotten!

cblemcallister is correct. Eric Bogle came from near Peebles in the Scottish Borders and emigrated to Australia when in his mid 20s. The song is about him leaving his mother behind. When he got to Australia his songwriting developed and he also wrote "And The Band Played Waltzin Matilda" as well as "No Man's Land". Irish performers often incorrectly call the latter song "Green Fields Of France" or "Willie Mcbride"

I have so many memories listening to these songs and can just hear my daddy singing them. I learned many of these songs by ear and played thm on tinwhistle as a kid. Finbar furey best band ever.
