@@philpants44 Well it is a song about how a man loved a woman and not how a man loved his daughter no? I don't understand all this where people miss-represent totally the meaning of a song. If this guy is singing this to his daughter maybe he needs some help or reporting to the police. I will probably go to the police tomorrow to report this myself and get the guy in question locked up for 5 years and on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life. Nothing less than he deserves and it will be all his daughters doing.. I hope she can recover from he abuse he inflicted on her although she seems to be in denial, her father is a pervert...

I’ve listened to this several times now and I have come to agree with you the slow plucking of the banjo really makes the song. The first time I listened and the second as well I thought to myself, that banjo player isn’t very skillful he can only play one note at a time and so slowly but now I see why, it’s for the effect, the wistfulness and the simplicity. You nailed it.

This song hits me so hard. My father from lismore down the south in co Waterford. He met my mother when she was 16 he was 18. He just passed of pancreatic cancer. We grew up in Ireland and Boston. The Irish touch your heart with music. We would drive around listening to this and he would tell me this is your mother’s song. I miss you daddy. May god bless the Irish.

Sixteen is timeless, the first, the start, the beginning, the hopes, dreams, the energy, the never surrender, the loyalty, the trust, faith, belief, the new, changing of the world forever for good. What a burden is carried by every generation, captured in this simple song.

I love this song having Irish ancestry, it was one of my dad's favourites along with Danny boy, sadly he passed back in 1979 a year after my ma. Then 3 years ago to the end of this month August, my brother and I were sleeping next to my sister in a hospice as she was dying of cancer. She was in and out of consciousness, the she suddenly asked my brother to play this song, which he did on his mobile, as she loved it also, the next day August 31st she passed. Crying as I write this but have a Guinness in hand. God bless. Then

I knew this back in the day, as a kid. My mother loved it as did my grandfather (a Maloney, Irish heritage, who fought in WW2 and never spoke of it, yet this brought him to tears). He died in 1987. This album reached through my entire family and remains with me til this day. I am passing it on to my daughter, who is ten. Great music is timeless. And this deserves to be remembered forever. Please share this with your kin.
