My mum was dying in hospital, the nurses said you can play songs and hold her hand. I played this song on my phone, to her with all the family around, it was a special moment for me.

@@philpants44 Well it is a song about how a man loved a woman and not how a man loved his daughter no? I don't understand all this where people miss-represent totally the meaning of a song. If this guy is singing this to his daughter maybe he needs some help or reporting to the police. I will probably go to the police tomorrow to report this myself and get the guy in question locked up for 5 years and on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life. Nothing less than he deserves and it will be all his daughters doing.. I hope she can recover from he abuse he inflicted on her although she seems to be in denial, her father is a pervert...

As a Brazilian dude who flew to Ireland in 2011 to learn English in the emerald Island, my best memory is when i first heard this song. It was magical and so sincere that I almost cried for missing something i didnt know what was and for the good memories i couldn t either remember. After a couple of weeks one irish friend of mine Rip Patrick, told me one of the musicians of the band was just at the corner of dunnes suopermarket where we went for some food. i was so happy and we exchanged a couple of words and tht has made my visit to ireland, thanks a million guys, you re the best .

I remember my dad always sang this old Irish song since I was about six yrs old. I wd climb into his lap in my jamies and he’d sing me to sleep. He had the sweetest crooner voice much like Crosby and Como. That’s how he won my mother’s heart. I’m 80 and he’s long passed but his memory is sooo strong. He wd lift his head toward heaven and sing his heart out as if he was having a vision.😊 Thank God for sweet warm memories🙏

This song hits me so hard. My father from lismore down the south in co Waterford. He met my mother when she was 16 he was 18. He just passed of pancreatic cancer. We grew up in Ireland and Boston. The Irish touch your heart with music. We would drive around listening to this and he would tell me this is your mother’s song. I miss you daddy. May god bless the Irish.

I’ve listened to this several times now and I have come to agree with you the slow plucking of the banjo really makes the song. The first time I listened and the second as well I thought to myself, that banjo player isn’t very skillful he can only play one note at a time and so slowly but now I see why, it’s for the effect, the wistfulness and the simplicity. You nailed it.

I love this song having Irish ancestry, it was one of my dad's favourites along with Danny boy, sadly he passed back in 1979 a year after my ma. Then 3 years ago to the end of this month August, my brother and I were sleeping next to my sister in a hospice as she was dying of cancer. She was in and out of consciousness, the she suddenly asked my brother to play this song, which he did on his mobile, as she loved it also, the next day August 31st she passed. Crying as I write this but have a Guinness in hand. God bless. Then

This album reached through my entire family and remains with me til this day. I am passing it on to my daughter, who is ten. Great music is timeless. And this deserves to be remembered forever.
