Great videos Eric , I am somewhat of a novice building engines for horsepower . I am a club member and I purchased a set of cylinder heads, Jessel shaft rockers , custom grind cam and lifters from Eric for my SBC 427 , when you do business with Eric, he will give you his undivided attention. I sent him an email, just a question about piston to valve clearance figure he would get back to me in a day or two. I sent the email when I was standing in the kitchen of my house and before I got to my living room chair, he called me immediately with an answer. You’ll be hearing from me again for more parts. Thanks Eric 👍

Great job Eric! Never got any in depth info like this before. When i get off work im definently going to calculate the dynamic compression ratio on all of these. Keep up the amazing work and will support the SBF test for sure.

Back in the day when I built a motor, I'd sit forever going over manufacturers cam specs before choosing. It was probably more miss than hit. Now that I'm 70 and most my toys are gone except my 08 Vette with bolt ons and tune I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed being a backyard mechanic again making by own picks based off your data. Yes, I contributed but, just like I can't tell you I've enjoyed this I also can't explain it to my wife who thinks I'm nuts. I look forward to the SBF challenge and will contribute again. In the meantime, I'll enjoy your videos, and I've also latched on to Danny Powel who just seems overflowing with knowledge. Wish I'd run into someone of these guys when I was in my 20s.

Thanks. I have the cards already but thought I’d leave a comment. I ordered the SBF one too. I like all the engines no matter who makes them. Thanks for the hard work and good luck on the next one. I really enjoy your straight shooter way of explaining things. Sometimes it seems you feel people don’t believe you or something. Just ignore those people and the trolls. You have an excellent channel and 95% of us don’t need you to tell us you are telling the truth, aren’t cheating, or bsing us. Hey I need some iron e7te heads ported. I do that right? If there ends up being enough donations for more spaces I’d love to enter and send you a cam.

Very interesting results. Before looking at the specs, a big split between intake and exhaust duration seemed to be what the engine wanted. But second and third place did not have a large split. Tight lobe separation (more overlap) seemed to do well, then a couple cams with 112 and 114lsa did well.
@realazliving

@@Matthew-uj4zx yes there was a lot of data and different types of cams did well. It’s interesting to look through.

What I want to see, is that now that the cat is out of the bag, and everyone understands what principle gave the best results, if the next challenge will have people converge on a particular type of cam depending on whether the intake or exhaust side is the bigger bottleneck in the system.

From what I can tell the big winner focused on a restricted exhaust and most of the rest were very tightly bunched which isn't really a surprise. Although I'm sure that the players had a good time as a spectator I haven't learned a lot. Use software, use 20 years of experience, use rules specific to this engine block, but not much discussion on generalizing how to measure engine flows and match the cams to it. Hopefully someone will take this on.

My take away from only a single look. Valve closing event @0.050 - closer to 40°ABDC improves low and mid torque with a loss of top end hp. Nk Performance cracked 670hp with the intake closing at 43°ABDC due to lobe design (gets the valve open and holds it open longer at higher lift points) so scored both low/mid torque advantage by having a higher trapped mass without cutting the top end off that comes from closing the valve early.
@realazliving
@realazliving Ай бұрын
@@crd-nz_001 yes I go with around 40 is a street motor, as you go to 50, 60, 70 it becomes more race and less street drivable. Also you need more static compression to go with later closing.

Well Vizard was right, 108 lobe centerline angle did the best, what he got wrong was the profile of the exhaust lobe, who knew getting more out of the biggest bottleneck in the system would give the biggest gains. Real eye opener.

@@rolandotillit2867can you explain how a 115 LSA came in 5th, a 113 LSA came in 13th in front of his 108, at 14th, if it has any merit at all?
@rolandotillit2867
@rolandotillit2867 Ай бұрын
@@optimumperformance6998 Look at the winner 108.5 can you explain that? Again, the LSA affects torque, because it affects overlap, in 4 valve engines the LSA is controlled by cam phasers. Is there more to selecting cams than over lap? Sure. The biggest difference was in the exhaust lift and duration, because the exhaust side was the bottle neck.
@optimumperformance6998

@@rolandotillit2867proper event timing at the valve and lobe shape for this specific application and test parameters. Bobby, who designed the winning lobes, and the lobes on multiple cams in this competition explains this in his own video. He does not look at LSA, that is just a result of a properly designed cam for a specific application. I will ask again, how does a 115 LSA cam with less lift come in 5th? Which part is important? LSA / Overlap or events at the valve and area under the curve?
