My 11 5.3 started running rough and intake sounded wierd, so I pulled the intake and found a quart of oil expecially going into cylinder 6 where I have a misfire code, so I pulled the valve cover and found that I have the upgraded cover so I will now be installing an oil catch can!

There's a TSB 10-06-01-008G . Part # 12570427 is for 2007-2008 and part# 12642655 for 2009-2001 5.3l, not sure for the 4.8l. If you have AFM, there is a shield pqrt # 12639759 that goes over the AFM relief valve in the oil pan. If you do a DOD delete or do not have AFM, it is not needed. Plus I like the catch can idea also.

I have a 2011 gmc canyon with the 5.3. Lh9 to be exact. It smokes like a freight train on initial start for about 5-10 seconds and then disappears until it sits for awhile and then fired back up. But I have noticed the amount of smoke I get is determined on how hard I drive it. If I drive it kinda hard, it’ll smoke like hell on the next crank up. If I baby it, it will smoke very little to almost none. Pcv valve maybe? And it does drink about a whole oil change between oil services.

And I do have a really bad sluggish problem after the motor has been running for about 20-30 minutes. It’s really sluggish like at red lights or stop signs. Almost feels like it’s taking off in 2nd instead of first, don’t know if that could also affect performance like that. Idk lol

@@AnthonyJ350 ummm here recent I haven’t really changed it. It drinks so much in about a few weeks that I just assume it’s filtering itself. I’ve had to put about 4 quarts at once a few times. But normally every few months maybe. I drive about 20 minutes to work everyday. But I work with Nissan and one of the techs told me that it’s a good possibility that it’s the valve cover, he told me to research around and see what other people are saying.

If it's not leaking and not burning oil, then where is it magically disappearing too? It's burning it, you're just not seeing it. Remove the intake tube and flip open the throttle body butterfly and look at the valley floor of your intake with a flashlight. Probably coated in oil. Punch it on the highway from like 20 mph to 100 mph. Mash it up the floor and don't let up. Look out the back window as you do so and after you let off the throttle.

So I'm assuming the outlet port on the catch can connects to the top of the manifold. I have a 2014 escalade with a 6.2 and I found the pcv in the back of the drivers side valve cover, but when I traced the line it hits some type of junction with a plug in then comes out the other side and connects to a port on top of the manifold not the throttle body . @@AnthonyJ350 the passenger side hose is to allow fresh filtered air to enter the engine so it can be sucked out by the driver side hose. If you don’t have a way for air to enter the engine the pcv system will pull a vacuum on the crankcase. The passenger side hose must be connected downstream of the MAF sensor so you don’t have false air (MAF bypass). And yes under WOT conditions there is enough blow by that the passenger side hose reverses direction and allows pressure in the crankcase to vent to the intake to be burned.

My 2000 Silverado 5.3l has a PCV in the back side of the driver's side valve cover. Same location as the "orifice" in the one you've shown. The oil doesn't come from there on the older motors. The older style had a VERY SIMILAR valve cover on the pass side, to what the newer ones like yours have. It's literally just moved back a hair. Why people see "so much oil" in the throttle body of the old ones compared to new ones, is because the pass side vacuum line pulls from the throttle body itself. In like 03/04 and newer, like yours, it moves the vacuum back to the plastic part of the intake. So it still sucks the oil in, but puts it behind the TB so you don't see it as much. Also, something you can do to cut down on some of this oil, is to 1) Install catch cans. (I know. That's a pain). And 2) The "CHEAP" solution, is to pull the valve covers, remove the baffle plates and drill some drain holes in them. Then tap 4mm holes where the rivets were and reinstall the baffles. If you own a TIG, you can tack them back in place, but if you don't know how to weld alum, don't try this. Also, be sure to loc-tite the screws you tapped holes for so they don't come out. Finally, you can re-rivet them if you are good enough. I've personally had "Limited" success using a rivnut setup in the drilled holes, but without through hole access, they are tough to get seated right.

Any engine where the PCV outlet is on the valve cover. I would pull it off to see if you already have the updated design, or see if you can buy the new one and see if it's refundable.

Why bother with a catch can if you already have a mid-year 2011 or newer 5.3 with all the proper updates from the factory????

I would rather double it up and help slow it down. That's just a preference because I don't see OCC always as a guarantee.

The newer engines need a catch can even more since they have the displacement on demand crap...they have a tendency to drink up oil quicker than the older gen LS.

@@eddiefromcali I love getting 22mpg highway with the displacement on demand in my eight passenger 6000lbs Suburban. I haven't noticed any oil consumption. It can't hurt it putting a catch can in just see if it works on the updated newer models.

@@AnthonyJ350 2005, no, but ever since they came out with the AFM oil consumption as been an issue. And that is the 2007.5 model. They always denied it as they said a quart in a thousand miles is normal. When one can't stand behind their product, I won't own another. Now, the AFM/DFM is such a problem on the 5.3 that they are discontinued starting this month. Blaming it one shortage of semiconductors. Another damn live by Government Motors!!!

@@AnthonyJ350 If you do any research on them since 2007.5 it's a major issue. Oil consumption and lifter issues. Many do a DOD and get rid of the problem. Their new style is also causing issues. Could explain why now they're ending the AFM/DFM on the 5.3 and blaming on a shortage of semiconductors. GM just refuses to stand behind the problem.

@@billmonroe8826 I'm sure they have issues. But what's the percentage of affected? I still think GM push rods engines are the best gas V8s you can get. My next truck will be a 6.0L without DOD because I like simplicity and I want the bigger engine in the 2018s.
