Salonga damaged her voice during her run in the West End premiere of “Miss Saigon” in 1989-1990 and required vocal rest and rehabilitation. I believe she was out of the show for about 3-4 weeks and in her absence, Monique Wilson and Jenine Desiderio alternated as Kim. Major props go to Salonga’s singing teacher Mary Hammond for helping Salonga rebuild her singing voice from the ground up by studying and learning bel canto vocal technique.

Filipino singers are trained so they can sing seated. Some even trained while lying down, on a treadmill or neck deep underwater. You can search for Wish Bus videos where they sing live for a radio station whilst inside a bus. Lea did musical theatre as early as 7 years old so singing whilst seated is something she can do even before Miss Saigon.
