I'm from Southern California and a graduate and fan of both the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the USC Trojans. Next to USC's fight song, "Fight On!", and UGA's Redcoat Band special arrangement of "Glory", LSU's 'Hey Fighting Tigers" is my favorite college spirit song. This tune really gets you revved up. From the original score of, "Hey, Look Me Over", the lyrics and music are perfect and the LSU band is superb!

The tune is "Hey Look Me Over' from the 1960 musical "Wildcat", by Cy Coleman. The Pete King Chorale did the most famous cover in 1961. The vocals need a lot more oomph, they sound muddy.

Lucille Ball (!) was the leading lady in "Wildcat" (about a lady oil tycoon!), but she couldn't sing a lick. Cy Coleman was one of the (very) few Broadway composers who could write great marches: "Pass Me By" (from the film "Father Goose"), a minor hit for Peggy Lee and Pat Boone ('64), and "Before The Parade Passes By" (from the musical and film "Sweet Charity", adapted by Neil Simon from a Fellini film), memorably done by Shirley MacLaine. But this song has stuck around and remains part of LSU's especially lively repertoire.
