As a fielder in college it was hilarious when a pitcher would get an at bat. Oddly enough they would put good barrel on it. There is something to going into a situation where there is no pressure because people don’t expect you to succeed already and won’t blame you if you don’t.

Many college coaches that don't let their pitcher hit are missing out, many of these pitchers were the best hitters on their high school teams. As a coach you should want the best 9 in the batting order!

It’s very rare when a player can still adequately do both once they get to that level…. Every single guy out there was THE best hitter on their team. Also at some point you have to focus on one or the other when the talent margins are razor thin and super competitive. There is just no way for them to practice enough of each thing to be good at both at that level. The ones who CAN are few and far between.
