It’s crazy that I started watching LSV doing vintage cube drafts like 6 or 7 years ago. Thanks to him I was introduced to the best magic format and built a vintage and tribal cube lol

Oko is weird in that he's a really well-designed card that is balanced terribly. His loyalty abilities all synergize well into a package that breaks the standard planeswalker mold. If you reduced every loyalty number on his card by 1, you'd have a card that's still fundamentally the same design, but it would never have taken over the game the way the original did since the elk can take him out much easier. You're right on about companion though. Maro once said that in an older set they tried a mechanic where you could have a card start in your hand at the cost of drawing one fewer card at the start of the game. After one playtest, they scrapped the mechanic entirely. In light of this, it's surprising they even printed companion.
@cedI3952 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Oko should at least have been balanced so that, if your opponent has a single creature and you Elk it, the Elk should be able to kill Oko in two swings before he make a food token blocker. It's such a basic play pattern and it's shocking that they missed it.

7:27 This is Stowaway over Teferi and imo it's not even close. In pack 1, neither T3f3ri or Swords wheeled from pack 1, and you saw hints that reanimator is open, plus Stoaway is one of the best "fair" cards in the cube even if you are not reanimator. Even if I was UW cheons I'd have to think hard when choosing between Stowaway and big Teferi.

I'm shocked LSV thinks Winota is an awesome design. I think it's terribly overpowered and horribly designed, as are so many cards these days.
@Nightwing6902 жыл бұрын
As someone who started seriously playing competitive magic around the year 2000, my top 10 poorly designed cards are the following in no particular order, and keep in mind "for the era they were printed in" applies here: Oko, Thief of Crowns Sensei's Divining Top Mistbind Clique Bloodbraid Elf Arcbound Ravager Jace, the Mind Sculptor Delver of Secrets Primeval Titan Emrakul, the Aeons Torn Collected Company
@paulm21632 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is more a list of overpowered cards for their respective time and place, but they aren’t necessarily bad design. If you added another (1) to Oko for example he may not seem like a badly designed card anymore. I think what LSV is describing is like with a card like Moat that just straight up beats some decks cold and makes others just like a total slog. The example of the companions is it seems like bad design because it makes you pigeon hole your deck building in order to have access to some very powerful card guaranteed every game. I feel lik WOTC should have learned this mistake from Hearthstone where it feels like they pinched the idea where they had two cards that respectively allowed only even or odd cards in your deck to start with a huge power boost turn 1 by having them in your deck. They kind of ruined standard in that format for their entire cycle and then are still present in Wild (HS version of Leagacy). It’s just kind of bad design to say “Okay restrict your deck building for the promise of some type of guaranteed pay off.”
@Nightwing6902 жыл бұрын
@@paulm2163 My list was more directed towards cards that were badly designed for the era they were printed yes.
@vecvecvec2 жыл бұрын
@@Nightwing690 thats power level youre talking about; when lsv is referring to design hes talking more about concept than the balance of numbers on the card. oko and top are insanely powerful and also horrible design because they tend to make play less fun by being unnecessarily centralizing (and in top's case, taking way too long just to use). collected company is very powerful, sure, but its fucking SICK to cast and a lot of fun both in deckbuilding and in play.

Respectfully, I disagree about Bridge from Below. In terms of a Future Sight card, it's a super novel build-around that creates only interesting, synergy decks.

Itd be more interesting if it could only be put in your yard by paying 3 mana and if it got milled it was shuffled back in.
@petrie9112 жыл бұрын
Bridge has the problem that a lot of bad designs have: it bypasses the mana system. Getting something for no mana is a huge deal. If Bridge simply required you to pay {1} to get the zombie token, it would probably be fine.
