Rock Rachon 20.04.23
Guests: Lt Col Dan Hampton
Retired United States Air Force fighter pilot and bestselling author lieutenant colonel Dan „Two Dogs” Hampton joined Rock Rachon on Thursday to discuss the air element of the war in Ukraine. Lt Hampton talks about the modern battlefield, how the integration of all combat systems looks like - from drones, through aviation to tanks and artillery. We are also talking about the equipment advantage that Ukraine would undoubtedly gain if Western countries would provide it with the latest combat aircraft - such as the F-16, which lt Hampton knows like the back of his hand...

Yeah, even with him NOT wanting to go into finer details of HOW exactly the F-16 (the "transitioned" fighter jet between the older 4th and the F-35) is superior to virtually all Russian made fighter jets --- even the supposedly 5th ge Su-57 ---- if you have been reading on and following radar, computation, semi-conducting evolution, and simple avionic integration (how the West, in particular, the US, given it has a $1T defense budget)... you should be able to extrapolate it really is not possible for Russian to keep up with Americans. Now, the Russians, as the Col. said, are VERY GOOD at producing just very big, powerful fighter jets, crude and badly fabricated.... but very powerful. They've done it since they built the Mig-25 Foxbat to intercept the SR-71. Like the SR-71, the Foxbat has a 3.2+ Mach upper limits; but the SR-71 has been retired for close to 2 decades, even though it likely will remain the MOST aerodynamically beautiful top end jet ever builld BEFORE the dawn of modern high-end jets DESIGNED by super computers and run on high-end computer chips. The Russians are so poor, they STILL operate that Foxbat today as one of their top flying aircraft... a flying aircraft built in the days of ANALOG technologies, even if they made minor changes to the various things. The actual jet design, main components, main engines, etc. are still largely from the 1950 - 70 era! Again, fast, powerful, and very deadly... but it is a BRUTE FORCE machine. Pitting a brute force machine from the 1950-70s against an alien-like fabricated and 2023 7nm and 5nm (up-coming 3nm) chip controlled machine... is just silly.... Russia has ZERO capacity to designing and fabricating 10nm, 7nm, 5nm, and the upcoming 3nm chips that run all high-end machines and jets and electronic equipments... Today's super computer-operated fighter jets like the F-35 will spot the Foxbat ---- and ALL OTHER JETS ----- tens of miles away and minutes before the latter know what's up or down or what's coming at them. By the time the Foxbat & other cruder/older jets see missiles in their radars, even with 3.2+ Mach speed, it's already too late... Today's missiles (both air to air and surface to air... but especially the larger and faster ground to air high-end missiles) don't care which LARGE CHUNK of flying metals they go after.... or what name the riders call their large chunks of flying metals.... Almost all those large flying chunks of metals --- manned and unmanned --- WILL BE SHOT DOWN, if they have unknowingly crossed into a "dead zone" missiles are built to kill... Americans & the West have SHIFTED their approach (on the building & equipping of fighter jets & auxiliary craft) .... to managing INTEL (how to receive & transmit large volume of info very fast, very efficiently, without broadcasting your own location to the enemies) .... not to spend too much time on those large chunks of flying metals that impress public air show crowds so much (like those incredible stunts the 3-D nozzled Su-35/57 could do)..... but stunts that are 100% useless in a large volume of contested space, in a war.

I am no expert but the F18 was designed as a close air support fighter for the Marine Corps and has served its purpose well. Also, there is the EA-18G "Growler" electronic warfare variant that is legend. They certainly have much beefier landing gear than the F-16. I think they would fit well.

Yup, based on my very limited experience as a pilot, what Lt Col Hampton said: 3 months sounds about right for an experienced supersonic fighter pilot to master the knobology and flight techniques of the F-16. The Ukrainian pilots will certainly be well beyond the "cabbage head" stage at that point!

Thank you for the most in-depth interview - question - and - answer segment than any news channel has ever shown anywhere else! It's fascinating to learn of the real world elements our nations contributions can achieve if only the old man in office would unplug his ears and allow it. We're needing this real network air support to push these achievements forward and move the Russian goalposts back to their own land as it is known internationally.

From here in the USA, As much as I loved the A-10 Warthog, it would probably be dead meat in today's war. Very tough and in its intended use Is devastating. Unfortunately it's design is for down low ground support. It is slow and shoulder launched weapons would very easily take them out. F-15 would be much better suited till Ukrainian pilots are trained on F-16's.

F-16 fighter jets is a progression training and everything you need to do can be seen through your helmet it is not like civil plane that you need paper and pencil, the F-16 jets will teach what should be done and it is readable in your helmet glass.

Man, they'd have to be flying some serious hours to do that. I thought that the Ukrainians received a whole crap load of MIGs in boxes, for spare parts. Have these been used up? The fact that Ukraine has ANY aircraft left blows my mind, considering the original numbers, ratio wise and in total. I don't think Ukraine really wants A10s, not for use anywhere that Russian AA exists, anyway. UK, as always in this war, YOU GUYS ROCK! :-) Oh, and excellent questions. You definitely have the baddest ass name on TVP, Rock. So close to "Rock, rock on". :-) "Hunting down and killing SAMs, etc.". Somehow that doesn't sound like the least dangerous flying available. :-/ What are you flying in to attack? Things that kill airplanes. It reminds me of the old joke about Kamikaze pilot in a briefing where, after being explained the mission, raises his hand and asks, "You out your friggin mind?!". Let me guess (without knowing), when he spoke about the Russian fighters, the word he used was sh*t. And yeah, Russian fighters are quite beautiful, at least ya gotta give them that. That condensing of information into something usable by a pilot, with all the other distractions he has, like not hitting the ground or being blown out of the air, was some seriously difficult stuff to get a handle on. A lot of iteration has gone into the present systems. And sensor fusion/integration gives you a LOT of advantages.

It's not going to take long. The UAF can transition to the Super Tucano which is being used by the US Air Force and because of the display setup, its an easy transition to the F15. So when you see Super Tucanos are being supplied, don't knock it, there is a long term plan.

At the beginning, Mikal, you talked about how the West/NATO assumed when Russia attacked it would follow a doctrine similar to the West; First control the Air. Russia made a half-assed attempt but it didn't happen. ALL the best Military leaders in the World thought as Putin did that this would be a 2 week war at the most-that was a year and four months ago. When the Pentagon was watching the invasion in real time, I sure would have like to have been a fly on the wall to hear their reactions to Russia actions, or NON-actions. I'm pretty sure many many sentences began with 'What the HELL are they doing?'
