Harold Gregory "Hal" Moore, Jr. (February 13, 1922 - February 10, 2017) was a United States Army lieutenant general and author. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, which is the U.S. military's second highest decoration for valor, and was the first of his West Point class (1945) to be promoted to brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general.
Moore is best remembered as the Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, at the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, during the Vietnam War. The battle was made into the movie We Were Soldiers in 2002, which starred actor Mel Gibson as Moore; Moore was the "honorary colonel" of the regiment.
"We Were Soldiers" is a 2002 war film that dramatizes the Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965. The film was directed by Randall Wallace and stars Mel Gibson. It is based on the book We Were Soldiers Once… And Young (1992) by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway, both of whom were at the battle.

Leaders like Moore and the Sgt Mjr are few and between! America was blessed to have had both of these men serve in our military! May we NEVER forget their sacrifice

I heard an interview on the radio with the reporter, and he was retelling a lot of what happened, and it was just like it in the movie. Mel diligently studied and learned how these things happened and made sure it was portrayed as close to how it was as he could, and thats the greatest honor he could give those soldiers.

Leaders like General Moore don't come along very often but when they do we grieve for their loss. I was drafted just prior to this battle and never served in combat. I salute you Lt. General Moore. Hooah!

I think Teddy Rosevelt Junior is also worth a deeper look. There were not supposed to be any flag officers going with the first wave on the D-day. Buzt he decided to go with the force landing on Utah beach, and it is just as well that he did. The original plan of assault did not survive the contact with the enemy, they landed a mile off the mark, which in that context was a lot. Ted Roosevelt personally went to get a picture of the situation, decided on new plan of action and then famously said "We'll start the war from right here!"

This is a truly excellent movie not about war; fighting, killing and dying but about people and how they rise to be the best they can be with their brothers and sisters in experiencing the burning side of life. A real tribute to professionalism of an officer, and men to the highest standard and decency in battle and that both sides undeniably share a community humanity

I was "old". Graduated college in June, 1965 at age of 23. Had a student deferment. After tried to enlist in Navy and Air Force. Wouldn't take be due to eyesight. Draft Board found be 1A even though couldn't see the big E on the chart. Almost ended up in Marines on induction. I was "old" in years to my fellow soldiers, but wiser!

Finally a movie that depicts the American soldier not as a drug crazed psycho but as a man having courage and honor , willing to lay his life down for his follow soldiers . And Mel Gipson portrayal gives honor to Col. Moore and his men , both living and dead . And those that were named in the movie that died , that is how they died so imagine as a family member watching as how your husband or dad had died . 2nd Lt. Jack Geoghegan and Pfc. Jimmy Nakayama deaths were portrayed as they had occurred along with others , so please remember them and those that gave their all , for they are never really gone as long as someone remembers them .
