These two glory hogs got allot of men killed. I was with the same unit only in 69-70. I never remember a sergeant major or battalion commander being in a firefight. We lost allot of good men in Cambodia in 70, one didn’t come back, he’s still there. Most were draftees, What a waste and glorified these men??????

Both Moore and Plumley understood, and instilled in the troops under them, that one must lead from the front. Don't order your men to do what you either can't or won't do yourself. Also, their chain of command was near unbreakable. Each man knew the job of the man above and below him, that way, even if they took casualties in the Sr NCO ranks there was still a Jr NCO that could do the job. Both Moore and Plumley are bona fide heroes and leaders in my books.

In the first North Vietnamese Army-U.S. Army formal battle encounter, then LTC Hal Moore, at Ia Drang, was outgunned and outmanned. He held his command, the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) together. They survived a horrific fight. Moore was first off the lead helicopter and the last soldier to leave the battlefield three days later. He later said about soldiers,” “spend time with your soldiers. Talk with them. Never ever abuse them by act of omission. They are the secret to successful command on or off the battlefield.” It was known those years after he would visit the graves of those that fell at Ia Drang and he did it quietly with no fanfare. LTG Hal Moore was an extraordinary soldier in the way; he carried himself after he left the service. I had a BN commander in the US Army in Berlin who got a battlefield commission in Vietnam he was a excellent commander and I learned that from my BN CSM the our BN commander had served under Hal Moore as his aid when he was a 1st Lt thus it explained everything to me he retired as a O6 35 years later we still talk and he's just as humbled as he was then he has 3 silver stars and 3or 4 tours in Vietnam as an enlisted E-6 to his battlefield commission. He was a old paratrooper from the 101st Airborne Division before Vietnam and during.

Being the navy I met a few master sargeants and first sargeants from the marines. We had a couple Master Chiefs that i revered but none so much as the Marines. never dealt with the army much but any of those seniors NCO's tell you to do something you better friggin listen and do as they say they have lived it. They want to bring you home alive. I wish could have met General Moore and Sergeant Major Plumley.

During the Battle of the Ia Drang, SP/4 Willard Parrish using an M60 MG killed over 100 NVA regular soldiers in the ATTACK! He saved Moore's whole battalion from being attacked from the rear, his supply and medical area from being wiped out and his own command group. In effect Parrish SAVED Moore's whole battalion from being destroyed. Parrish killed more NVA and CHANGED THE COURSE OF THE BATTLE IN OUR FAVOR than the three Medal of Honor winners combined from that fight. He was given a Silver Star.

In Col Moore's book We Were Soldiers Once and Young, there are endless fights like that described. I believe Col Moore said the tough part was that for every commendation that was handed out, there was just as many, likely more acts of heroism and bravery in which no witnesses lived to write the commendations. The loss of life in Vietnam is hard to fathom.

Schwarkof's bio ' Doesn't Take A Hero ', where as a new officer, under fire first time in Vietnam, he panicked & ran into his first Sargent, and knocked himself out.

The picture of a pure soldier both these men are. Most Americans have zero clue the bond they have and just would never understand.
