Handy hint for Land Rover fans: Leftover shims can be cleaned up, plated, and given to the wife or girlfriend (or both) as bracelets. Thank me later.

Mike. These is a thorough rebuild of the LT230T transfer case for Land Rovers ! Hope your customer is happy eventually. Do you suggest it's a specialist job that needs an expert with all tools to fix ? V.

You can do it without tools but you need a bit of 'feel' with the job

great vid as always....I notice you used sealant......I have paper gaskets on my LT230 input cover plate (the previous owner replaced the gear due to the usual wear) but I'm not sure if its shimmed correctly... got a high pitch whine anything over 40mph but its ok for the 1st 20 mins of driving....I guess until the oil warms up and starts to thin??

Probably needs shimming but I suspect it could be the intermediate gears Hard to say

if I knock the xfer (i.e not in low or high) box into Neutral whilst driving, the noise goes away and it goes silent.....?

The recommended methods of setting up the input gear bearings are inconsistent. If you setup using the dial indicator method like you did and I recently did by measuring endfloat and adding 0.05mm preload, the shaft turns very easily by hand. Theres no endfloat but theres also very little resistance. If you setup using the spring balance method you need considerably more then 0.05mm preload. Not sure which way is the right way but using the spring balance method the amount of force needed to spin the shaft is much higher. Which way is the correct way?

I’m currently rebuilding two LT230s with another three to do. I found exactly what you said. And the difference in preload resistance (by hand) between the Centre Diff and the input gear is night and day. I wasn’t happy with the 0.05 pre load (too light IMO) , I measured the rolling resistance at 200g! As Mike said, we don’t know the special tool diameter, but given the WSM drawings are fairly to scale, it shows it a little bigger than the PTO dog teeth diameter. I used the plain section just behind the gear teeth (where cross drill holes are). At 0.05mm preload it equated to 200g rolling resistance. I added 0.1mm shim which brought rolling resistance up to 2kg. On the very low end of the old WSM spec, but felt better than the 0.05mm to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Are your maths right Mike , mine are bad but 2.50 shim + end float 0.45 + pre 0.05 = 3.00 ? , you said 3.05 am i missing something .

A bit off topic but looking for a little advice please Mike, We have a 1992 110 need new coil springs and regularly pull the caravan, not sure what type of springs to buy for a more comfortable ride,...............Heavy Duty or Medium and which would help with bounce/rocking when towing, thanks again, hope alls well there with you cheerio
