Doing those pimp wheel setups on a classic car like this should be a Felony in the UsA and a Criminal Code inditement in Canada. I drove one out of Edmonton sold to Mass. for 85,000 back in 2003. Low, low mileage and oil patch kids my age always garaged in Canada due to the weather. It had less than 8,000 original miles and was like sitting on top a a cat. Or Rolex. Completely different car experience. Told at the time it was one of 2,500. apparently that is incorrect, but still an amazing experience. I've owned a Chevelle but nothing like this one.

Buddy bought a Toyota Supra in the early eighties just after these cars won first and second in the East Africa Safari Ralleye. And yes, he put a hitch on it to tow his boat!! Strong car, why not!???

Thing is that the 350( made for over 60yrs) was so good that makes the bigger engine forgetful

I bought one of these back in 1977 for only $800 with 70,000 original miles. It was red with white vinal top, white skunk stripes, and white interior. It had buckets seats with auto center console shift. I eventually removed the 396/402 engine in it, and put an early model large oval port 454 in it out of a 1977 1-ton dually truck.

Based off the VIN on the HOC website, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, 36 for Malibu V8, 37 for sport coupe, 0 for 1970 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Arlington, TX plant still operates today and produces SUVs.

That's not a build sheet. That's an order form/writeup of an order. The build sheet was a computer printed document done at the assembly plant.

The LT4 makes 600 horsepower. Its badder than any muscle car ever produced back then.

This was quite a car in its stock form… even before the upgrades. I would not have done the upgrades…better that happen to a 6 cyl or small block. That being said and now that it is done…this car is Awesome!

It cost $4282.28. $3757.28 was the balance due after a $525 downstroke which the purchaser also paid.

Wow nice car, but for me I would have tried to find a period correct 396 which is almost impossible, don’t get me wrong the car is awesome the way it is and probably much better, I’m just saying. I would love to have it Great job Steve as always. Thanks

Buddy built his rancher FOR his bubble back window 409 back in the seventies. One of 550 made (actually had a factory plate inside the dash with his number, I think 383). He raced for Ford. Said the Beach Boys got the first four for writing "Shutem down 409". yes, he drove the car into his living room. the living room was FOR the car.

MID ENGINE 70 CHEVELLE My original 70 Chevelle four-door that I drove to work for a couple years in 81 and 82 I took the torch to it built an aluminum rod 355 dropped in a 557 screw in the back set the motor back 35 in and drove from the factory stock rear seat bolted on a ice Nitrous system but you never heard of unless you was living in the 70s and 80s put 7000 screws in my back tires and went 1/8 mile ice drag racing and kicked ass 2 years and switch to a 69 Nova

I'm not disagreeing that this is good for over 160 mph, but aren't those BF Goodrich T/A's S-speed limited to 112 mph? Budget accordingly.

As my dad a lifelong mechanic would say, you can't over build some part of any car and not follow through on all the rest of the drivetrain.

Im pretty sure the LT4 has 650 HP 650 TQ, at least thats what's in the C7 ZO6 corvette,

Everybody and his brother had an SS 396, GTO or Roadrunner in the late 60s-early 70s. Other muscle cars not so much. Those were all a handful with 325-350 hp at their top speed of 115 or so. 160 mph, 600 hp, I don't care how much was done in chassis and brake upgrades, that would be an experience you probably would only try once, way too thrilling. On the other hand, maybe not. I can remember a few 50s Chevy pickups with 365 hp 327s bolted in and no upgrades at all except wheels and tires. Those would get driven flat out probably once a day, though you might need both lanes and part of the shoulder at 100 mph. LOL

I had a 1951 GMC p/u 3 window, not 5, and a put together "sort of" Corvette engine with 202 heads. As long as you were going straight ahead......but the suspension doesn't allow for much else. That's why so many had Camaro clip front ends put in, for turns.

I've never understood the thinking behind doing something like this with a real SS car. They aren't making these cars anymore. With each passing year, the numbers only get smaller as cars are tragically totaled in wrecks or destroyed in garage fires, etc. Having a real, documented Super Sport is something special, especially when it comes to the actual monetary value of the vehicle. So why would you remove the stuff that makes a documented Super Sport special and replace it with all of this modern stuff when you can go buy a 1970 Malibu or even an undocumented/cloned "Super Sport" and do the exact same thing? Nobody cares if you pull a 307 out of a Malibu and swap in a modern engine. Then just paint the SS stripes on it, slap the badges on and you have what is functionally the EXACT SAME car...but instead of modifying (I was going to say "ruining" but that seems a little harsh for the relatively few modifications this car has) a real Super Sport, you made a plain Jane Malibu better. It reminds me so much of guys who pull the V6s out of Grand Nationals and swap in LS engines. WHY WOULD YOU EVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT?! The entire identity of the Grand National is tied to its turbo V6. If you want to put a V8 in it, go buy any old 1987 Regal, swap your LS V8 into it, paint it black, put the Grand National badges on it and be done with it. Now instead of ruining a Grand National, you've improved an insignificant 1987 Regal and ended up with functionally the exact same vehicle as if you would've pulled the V6 out of a real Grand National and swapped in an LS V8. What really annoys me is that I've seen people do full-on custom builds with totally new, modern, custom-built chassis; modern suspensions; all-new, non-stock, "modern" interiors; custom body mods and all kinds of changes on REAL Super Sport Chevelles (or R/T Challengers/Chargers, etc) as well. Those are the ones that REALLY drive me insane. You've left literally nothing that could ever identify the car as a "real" Super Sport...so why did you start with a real Super Sport in the first place? It makes absolutely no sense. This car is a little different because the changes could be put back to stock fairly easily. But the sentiment, to me, is the same. Edit: And by the way, that steering wheel is from a 1969 Chevelle...it's not correct for a 1970.

I feel your pain, along with my dad, a lifelong traditional mechanic on all makes. While I admire these so-called "resto-mods" and see them selling for huge coin, i have to wonder. There's just TOO much stupid money around. Even in my neighbourhood in Canada, you have to sell a LOT of pot of fund your jacked-up bigg twuck with the hatonbackwards types. Then you have to fuel the damn thing; gas up here is another 50% higher than any state!

There are many pristine examples of Chevelle SS’s already out there. This car was very tastefully done, including the Legendary Auto Interior Rallye seats (extra bolsters). Whoever buys this car can drive it anywhere in comfort. The original cars likely sit on Coker repro bias ply tires, don’t have a/c. Etc.

Of all of these I've seen over the years, I've never seen oversized rear wheels and tires. It's always stock sizing. Interesting.

I used to blow the back rods of Whatcom County, Wa. in my Chevelle in all weather, all the time. it IS a "stock car" after all. Nothing could stay on those back roads like a Chevelle. And hauling moonshine in the south!!!

Please don’t call this a true 396SS as it is not. The vin tag and bill of sale shows differently as all the original drivetrain have been changed!! You now have a original 70SS 396 body with a totally different underneath. Patrick Glenn would pick it apart!!!
