Some quite common challenges are changed spellings, the loss of many formerly German places to Poland, while their names seem to have vanished from modern maps, and moreover a confusion between German and Polish heritage, caused by many historical changes. Somewhat similar is a typical problem with "Prussia". Many people of "Prussian" descent have no idea how deeply their ancestors might have rejected their new Prussian identity, especially if they had their roots far west of Berlin. By the way, there are similar rifts cutting through Bavaria, originally even spiced with religious confessional conflicts.
