BREAK THROUGH and yes Sybil is right!!! (read through the comments, and you know). I have been successful at sewing the crown of this hat, that's the part that sits a top of my head, I tried it on and thus far it's good, the problem I ran into, was once I completed the crown of the hat, I had to actually turn the crown of the hat inside out before starting the brim of the hat, YES you have to turn the crown of the hat inside out, so when you attach the tighter woven placemat material to create the brim, you are on the correct side of your last sewing position, and now you can actually continue sewing the brim, as shown in this video, and yes it seems tiny gathers, are required for at least 3 inches out from the crown or more in efforts to keep the brim flat. I'm guessing that how much gathering required will depend on the size brim your are trying to achieve if using 3 or 4 placemats otherwise you'll get this puckering brim section.

Hello to make a wider brim how do you straighten the curve of the mat straw? I am struggling with getting the matting straight as the placemats have been curved for so long, mostly in the middle section of the mats. I hope you can help, thank you.

Tiny gathers are required? --I have no idea what this means. This tutorial looked so easy. I've failed miserably at trying to replicate my own. I can only get the crown to get wider at the bottom.. i can't figure out how to get the brim to go flat like a giant ring round my head. I try to keep it tilted at the correct angle for the bottom to happen, but my needle and thread holder bits also keep coming down to smash the crown and get stuck into the hat material. Gah!

@@xmobile.hard to explain but i will try, if you pull on the material you are sewing it tends to stretch longer, but if you push in on the material you are sewing it pulls the material closer together, watch the video really close, watch her fingers, you can see she pushing in slightly as she is sewing in the round. all the best.

Before you started sewing the brim, you turned the crown of the hat inside out. I think you should have stated and shown that. I am a senior citizen, we made these hats in high school so I understand what you did but someone not familiar who is making this hat for the first time could be confused. When filming a tutorial you should show and explain everything you do. every point is important to a beginner.

Thank you very much Rick! I'm so glad you like it. And I did not turn the hat inside out. You have to push the weave to make a little bit of a gather while sewing the brim in the beginning. And while you're sewing if you see the brim starts to get tight, then make a little bit more gather and continue sewing. Pay close attention to how I start the brim of the video 😊💝💞🌹💞💝.

❤ 4 mat hat is the winner by far, excellent tutorial, you have inspired me! I ordered a black sun hat from shein that did not fit my head, and now i will be able to salvage it by taking it apart and then sewing it back together with some added mats! Yay!! Thank you for this video

This is so clever, I have a small head and have a hard time finding hats that fit and until recently didn’t know how easy it was to crochet them, but I never thought I could sew one like this. Thank you, thank you. I even have a juki sewing machine
