Good to see your videos back! I have a question if that's ok Guy? During a gear box change last year, I had clutch plate removed to check it was all ok, but I don't remember marking Clutch flywheel or carrier with paint etc. before we disassemble. What problems could this cause if it wasn't put back in the same order? The bike gear change and clutch seem to be working fine, gear change is a bit lumpy.
@motophoenix59516 жыл бұрын
Mark Loder, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Misalignment of the clutch balance marks will increase the potential for engine vibration, but bear in mind that if the bike has done enough miles under the ownership of several other people, the chances are high that the clutch has been replaced and reassembled out of balance in the past. As for your comment about gear changing, I think balance is much less likely to be the case. Gear changing issues caused by the clutch are probably down to improper clutch adjustment / clearance (see one of those last videos I uploaded for adjustment), or a worn / damaged release mechanism, or warped / damage plates, spring etc. or another issue unrelated to the clutch.

Hi Moto Phoenix, I have a BMW R100RT registered 1993. How long roughly in hours would it take me to replicate a spline lubrication with paste as you showed here.?Thank you, Richard Allan.
@motophoenix59514 жыл бұрын
It depends on your capabilities and how practiced your are at the task. I can turn the whole job around, which includes all the transmission splines, paralever pivots, swinging arm bearings etc. in about 5-6 hours.

@@motophoenix5951 Hi Moto Phoenix .Thanks for your input, I watched your video and decided I did not have the skills or insight to undertake a Spline Lube. My request differed from yours, but I wished I had known about all the "extra's" you mention. I wonder if I have been overcharged ?As I am not a Mechanic I felt 5.5 hrs was excessive to undertake 3 tasks only. The rear wheel had to be removed any way as the tyre was to be replaced. I asked Two local car mechanics ,who dabbled with motorbikes, to perform 3 tasks : Draining and refilling the Final Drive. Applying the paste to the Gearbox Splines To check the rear main seal for leaks, as Final Drive had visible oil deposits on the casing. Their times against this task were 1.5 hours to remove the rear wheel and 4 hours against the Final Drive Maintenance ,propshaft oil change and seal check. Unfortunately, they did not balance the new tyre either.So a grand total of 5.5 hours. . I arrived at their Workshop to discover they were well into the guts of the task. They said so far 4 hours work was expended .I smelt a rat and called a halt to the work.The spline lube was never undertaken as I realized after 4 hours they were not near the spline.They also said the Final Drive Splines were always bathed in oil. which I knew anyway .This mean't they had undertaken a task for which they had no knowlege of. I had even given them the Manual.What do you think ? Regards Richard Allan.

@@richardallan455 The problem with getting anyone who, although they may be a skilled artisan, is not necessarily familiar with the thing you want fixed, is that it is still going to be somewhat of a learning curve. My advice would be to seek out someone who claims to specialise in the make/model of thing you want repaired and then get them to give you an estimate. That way you can decide if you want the work to go ahead and also you have a right hold them to the estimate I believe. Unless of course there are unforeseen circumstances that arise. At which point they have a duty to stop and contact you to discuss the matter. Personally, it seems to me in this case the person who did the work did not have adequate knowledge of what was was involved in carrying out the work, but equally it seems you could have made a better choice.

@@motophoenix5951 Thank you Moto Phoenix for your response.Unfortunately there is no body in my area who has a knowledge of Bmw Boxers,which has been a costly mistake.Their guys talked a good job and made me believe they were competant. My choices alas, of who to poot it to, were not so easy. How frequently should gearbox spline paste be applied? I have no guidance, and cannot refer to a genuine BMW Service-schedule for my Motorbike,as I do not have an original worksheet to identify when that task is required.I note you said in your video you carried this task out yearly. Best Regards, Richard Allan.
@motophoenix59514 жыл бұрын
@@richardallan455 so far as I am aware BMW does not list these tasks in any of its service schedules and there is no official recommendation to do so. I have checked both my BMW factory manual and my owners service book originally supplied with my machine and neither document mentions this work. Nevertheless, based on my knowledge and experience of 50 years of working on motorcycles I think it is good practice to carry out this work once a year or once every 20000 miles, whichever occurs first. Other folk who do this either decide for themselves or follow advice from others in the know. On the other hand many never bother to carry out this maintenance task. The choice is yours.

HI yes fiddly to be sure . I disconnected both clips and shoved the giator has far forward has it would go this gave a little bit more access and once one bolt was in it became easier. What a lot of work just replace the broken selector spring .
@mauriceeley6216 жыл бұрын
How do you get the 4 bolts in that connect the UJ joint at the gear box to final drive shaft . the B......DY gaitor is restricting any space
@motophoenix59516 жыл бұрын
maurice eley it’s a fiddle. Once the bolt holes are aligned, I usually offer up the bolts by holding the threaded part with a pair of needle nose pliers. Then apply a little force on the head of the bolt, while rotating the thread with the pliers. Of course, all the time I am also trying to keep the gaitor out of the way. It also helps if you leave the swingarm pivots out, so you can push the swingarm back a little in order to get better access.
@mauriceeley6216 жыл бұрын
Have you done a video on showing how to set up the the swinging ie get it central
@mauriceeley6216 жыл бұрын
will the rubber gaiter fold back to gain more access ?

Thanks for the content. Do you perform any maintenance on the speedometer cable? Lubricate it?
@motophoenix59515 жыл бұрын
Yes, if I can separate the inner from the outer; I have come across some you can't. When I can, I usually extract the inner at the top after first disconnecting the cable assembly from the speedometer. I wipe the inner with a clean dry rag. Then I smear a film of wheel brg grease on the lower end of the inner and start to feed it back in to the outer, adding more grease to the inner as I go. I leave the last 10 cm dry, to lessen the chances the grease finding its way its way into the speedometer.
