Ali Adat lol luckily i'm Moroccan so i speak Tamazight, Standard Arabic, Moroccan Darija Arabic, French, Understand Spanish, Understand Italian, Understand all other Arabic dialects, and i have been pasionate about English all my life through music,movies so I'm actually really good at it Cuzco I just engaged my self into it ! This is funny. I was learning Korean and Spanish at the same time and I would start sentences in Spanish and end them in Korean and vice versa.

A word about practice: "Practice makes perfect." ...is a lie. It should be stated: "Practice makes permanent." -- If you practice something the wrong way too long it becomes the normal and is that much harder to correct. So when working on pronunciation and grammar, get it right before moving on too far. Also, I'm a grammar descriptivist, not a prescriptivist. Don't learn a language mechanically via studying grammar too much. Children in their native language don't do this, you shouldn't either. You should be able to get the basic and intermediate concepts of grammar by repetition and mimicry; absorb grammar by pattern mimicry following native speakers. Focused grammar study comes later, like with a child in middle school when they already have a firm grasp on their native grammar -- then it becomes a matter of fine-tuning and complex structures used in formal writing.

Our brains are not wired like children's, so that logic is completely flawed. I think its plausible to do some grammar exercises and study the rules on top of recognizing the different grammar patterns in speech and writing. A combination of the two works great for me

Adults and child learn in a different way. You should read about "critical period" and you will notice it. However, I think grammar couldn't be the most important thing in your learning.

I live in Japan, and when my Bolivian-Japanese friend and I got excited or angry, we would switch among English, Japanese and Spanish, confusing everyone in a 5-mile radius. Lol

oh learning another alphabet isn't that hard! i'm speaking as someone who tried one time to learn russian and has learned cyrrilic. also i'd reccomend going to omniglot they've got phonetic transcriptions for letters and all that jazz (also explanations on where they're used!) unfortunately though japanese uses two syllibary (hiragana and katakana) which could be hard to learn depending on how well you learn stuff but kanji (the logographic system that is also used) is gonna be a challange no matter how you see it

when I learned French and Korean at the same time I used to ALWAYS say Je m'appelle ... 입니다. and I still do so until this day lol I gave up on French after school but I'm fluent in Korean now. These days I'm learning Danish and I also want to start Japanese or Chinese... Interesting to hear of these experiences! I started studying German in high school and (as all Finns) I had mandatory Swedish classes at the same time. With the two languages being so closely related, studying them at once did not work for me at all - so many words are similar, they might have a difference of just a letter or two, and I kept mixing it all up But now that in university, I'm studying Russian and Chinese at the same time and I have had no difficulties at all caused by this. I still think it helps a lot that the languages are not related.

Wow, i’m impressed👏 I am from Denmark and I have never heard about anyone who is learning Danish or wants to learn Danish😊 I myself have also had French in school but gave up on it and the same thing happend when I had German in school. It is kind of annying to spend so much time on a language you end up giving up on. Right now I am determined to learn Korean and hopefully I will complete that goal😊 But I am impressed by the number of languages people can maintain without being confused and mixing the different languages together💪 By the way, where are you from since you are learning Danish?😄

I'm a Korean and dealing with 3 different foreign languages, English, Japanese, German at the same time. It's hard to balance with them. I just take turns. The important thing is to keep doing and exposing to 3 languages without long lnterval.

Lele Luka yes it does sound very “aggressive” but it is a very beautiful language like all languages are yes some words like Krank it means hurt/sick but when you say it sounds very big like it’s filled with power but it is still a very nice language and to the question why do koreans want to learn german well tbh(i am korean) not really koreans don’t like learning languages that much koreans even have big difficulty even trying to speak English it is even harder for koreans to learn that is not English

Honestly, I just focus on things more if they are confusing. If I can't remember something grammar wise for Japanese, I will focus 90% of my study time on that problem until I am comfortable with it. I often find myself doing only Japanese for a few days then only Mandarin. And when I really don't want to study at all, I will do something like Duolingo for 5-15 mins in each just to get it done. The most annoying part is only remembering the character in the opposite language when I am studying. As in, I'll be studying Mandarin and I will only remember the Kanji pronounciation and not the hanzi. So I just keep going and read in Mandarin and say the one I don't know in Japanese. I am finished HSK1 and most of HSK 2 for Mandarin and probably 100% done with JPLT N5 material. Learning to forget is okay. It just means the next time you relearn that thing, you will probably remember it better. Only mixing up characters is a normal problem for me. But that is just practice

Great video. I would especially focus on your idea of "integrate the languages in your life". This is so important and crucial! People who want to learn a language only for professional purposes or because "it's the language of the future" get frustrated easily and give up soon, in my experience. Without genuine interest and passion you won't go anywhere.

Yes, that is a really important point! When I left Armenia, the modest beginning I had made in the language just stagnated. I had nobody to speak it with and I finished translating my favourite poems, so... I got stuck. Around here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5zKh6Z3jLKggMk . ;-)

I’ve been studying Japanese myself and Spanish at school, and I remember freaking out when I found out that the word “bread” sounds the same in both languages. In Spanish it’s “pan” and in Japanese it’s “パン”

In Portuguese is pão, in Korean 빵 (you can read pang with a very weak g) and I can think many other languages that it's similiar. As Brazilian, is so weird to me that in English we say bread. Like, it doesn't match. Lol

It's funny because English and French are both my first languages, but I can't speak English with a French accent to save myself. My British father, who learned French as an adult, does such an amazing Frenchy accent that our French friends request that he does it at parties.

I love the last tip about integrating the languages into your life. I only "study" about 45 min to an hour total per day, but I split that time up amongst the different languages. I find it easier to maintain my abilities by learning or reviewing each one daily rather than designating particular days of the week. Music and TV/KZbin videos in the target languages definitely helps 👍

So true about “love hate relationship with languages” and I’m actually relieved that you said that cause I thought I’m only one who have those feelings while learning Korean and Japanese. Usually I need two or two and a half years to learn a language to level where I can use it confidently and fluently. I never mix my learning languages, because when I focus on a language, I still want to maintain my already learnt languages (and learn even more vocab etc.). Also, I feel learning languages takes more effort the older I get (I'm in my mid-fourties now). When I was 20, I could learn more and faster, like I needed only 10 months to learn Old Greek to pass my Graecum exam at university. When I started Spanish, I was 36, and I needed 2 years. But the good news is that it gets easier when you can connect new languages to already learnt ones...

I've heard that using language laddering (as I see you're doing from a newer video; learning Spanish through Japanese) is helpful in preventing that mixing and confusion you see when you learn languages in the same base language. I haven't done it myself but I'm interested in trying it. I took Spanish in high school, stopped using it. Then in college I took German. And toward the end of college I needed to learn a bit of Albanian when I went to meet my now-husband's family and lived with them for a few months after graduation. So all of those languages were learned with English as a base. If I forget a word in Albanian, I usually know it in German. And in rare occurrences, I'll remember the word in Spanish only! But I do know there are a decent amount of German resources for Albanian out there, since many Albanians have moved to Germany. I'm focused on learning German right now, so I think it might be feasible for me to go back to Albanian through German once I've gotten a more confident. It's confusing, but once I get past this bump I think it'll be pretty fun to learn in another language besides English!

You can also use a language you are learning and have reached a intermediate language to learn other things of interest. For example, I like to read about history in French or Dutch, Or if you want to learn playing an instrument you can pick up an instruction book in a language you are studying.

Good stuff! It takes time, constant dedication, consistency, and goals. It feels to me like I've spent just ages and ages on German because I've been hardcore for what feels like a really long time, but it's only been a year and a half. I try to remember that when I get discouraged. "Hey, there's lots of time. Just keep at it, do it, and you're always improving, albeit slowly."

I watched this video last year while preparing to go abroad in France, and tbh ur tip on imitating the accent in my native language vastly improved my French prononciation. It made me able to recognise how French sounds are different from the sounds in my own language. Hi Lindie, great video! A great take on the 'how do you learn so many languages' video. Honestly I think the best part of the video was hearing someone else say that they don't really keep plans or to do lists for language practice. Rather just learn instinctively, by feel and whatever time you have free. This is how I'm learning right now, I don't know if I'll be able to do it the whole year or if I'll eventually need to be a bit more methodical. I found that often if im super methodical about language learning, it becomes more about writing to do lists and diagrams rather than actually learning. Cheers! ^_^

A few months ago I decided to learn Esperanto, and then I picked up Mandarin a little later. Couldn't be more different, right? Well, "ni" is a pronoun in both languages, but it's "we" in Esperanto and "you" in Mandarin. I've mixed them up So. Many. Times.

I'm chinese, currently learning french ... I have been learning spanish and Portuguese for 3 and half an year respectively , right now I have no problems interacting with native speakers 🔊 (as long as they speak at normal speed and avoid using certain colloquial terms) lol 😂....what I found intimidating is French , I managed to get some daily words to get more acquainted with this brand new language on a daily basis ... I just wanna say nothin is impossible if you have a willing heart and be persistent... furthermore , it's crucial that we practice everyday bc our memories will fade with time no matter how you trust your memory span ... good job ! I'm looking forward to getting your feedback regarding this in chinese ! Cheers ! 加油

I totally agree with you at the point where I can not just logically understand but also can truly feel you have gone through true struggles of learning languages. Such as balancing your time, the true willingness of one's desire for learning languages, and your personal time that has taken 3~4 years for communicative level of Korean. It's really true that you have to stick to the one language to fully master and get a result of communicative level. My life time goal is actually to learn 10 languages which are Korean, Japanese, Chinese for East Asia and English, French, Spanish and Russian for Western World and Turkish, Arabic and Farsi or Urdu for Central Asia and be at a communicative level on those not just speaking some sentences. To tell my personal experience, I kind of have disappointed on those polyglots who speak more than like 20 languages and have taken their advantages of learning 'nearby' languages because they could have learned something very different from their native language even few among those 20 languages although it's still amazing thing at the fact that least you attempted to learn something else outside of your shell. The reason why you could have already guessed that it sounds very wildly covered when you see those languages is because I know that not much of people is interested in learning languages in general so I wanted to set it like that to make myself have a journey to those languages someday at least and still in progress. At this rate, I know that if you learn a language, it's not just you are learning language but also learning or experiencing their culture deeply because at this period of my life, I figured out that myself's true interest lies on the beauty of Literature and the story of History that are only possible through learning their languages. Essentially, I want to live in the beauty of nature in time. Since I have already mastered at a certain level in English and Japanese (currently planning to get Kanken pre-1 level which is consisted of 3000 Chinese characters), my Korean is native already so no worry on that and currently learning French in baby step by step just like what you have described. My language journey has been already 8 years of Japanese now (mostly casually with 2~3 years of focused period unlike you have taken 3 to 4 years to get communicative level because I know Korean and Japanese are highly related and I'm Korean native anyways) and I can definitely say it had ups and downs that I can recall as 'Journey' as I mentioned earlier. Although I have studied Chinese here and there but didn't get attracted eventually until now so it's still here and there and my main focus now is french as I have been attracted to that language for no reason. Whoa, this was long essay but it's definitely worth it if you enjoyed my language story! all of the above is totally for my own fun and interest just like you.

3:12 this actually incredible advice I study Korean, Spanish and mandarin and I’m a complete beginner in mandarin but nearly fluent in Spanish and intermediate speaking level Korean and it’s actually made learning mandarin easier (?) because I have so much experience with Korean that I don’t confuse it with mandarin AT ALL. and other people who have studied both languages at the same time thought it was really confusing. so I would say I definitely agree to what you said!!!! this is super informative and interesting!!!! 💗

I naturally learned two languages growing up, in school I’m learning my third, and on my own time I’m learning one. Since I naturally speak two, and I’m comfortable with one, I end up speaking 3 languages at once. I just find whatever word is easier to say. My plan is to be able to communicate with all types of people, because when I was younger, I had to learn a new language.

Great advice! I can completely relate. I don't have a schedule either. What I use is a, "done list", as opposed to a to do list. I record everything I've done in terms of language learning in a day. Then I can look back and see what I've been doing intensively and what I've been neglecting, not just in terms of which languages, but also which methods. I just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying it!

i m 14 and I aculy have pretty good plan of how I'm learning at the same time couple of languages. first of all . 1.French. I m learning at school and listening to music lessons and ather as well as grammar at home. 2. Korean. learning at home grammar music as well I aculy inspired my classmate to learn it so we try to help each ather, I have word cards. 3 Russian . I m aculy living near that country so my mom knows how to speak it . my classmates picked Russian so they gave me there notebooks and athers things so I rewe and learn from it. My native language is not English . the funny thing is that i aculy kinda learned English on yotube more then in my school ;) My native language is REALY DAM HARD BUT unique and georges as well as old so i had pretty dam nice start cuz my native alphabet has realy hard to pronounce sounds . idk if I have super big goal but I want to speak 10 languages by the time that I will go to university ... I alredy know 2 that I can pretty fluently communicate thro and learning little by little 3 at the same time. after that I m thinking Spanish cuz its kinda close with French English as well as the grammar is easy. I m in love with Japanese as well as Korean so next round would by xd Spanish and Japanese XD

On the past years I been improving my vocabulary by the help of watching and hearing , movies vocabulary , letters , pronunciation is key writing down words , play with them , made words from base on a conversation , practice in you alone time in front of a miror , practice with people you get alone with 👌💯✍📝📂👁🧠👂🎶🔑🔄 you be madeking progress in few time ⏳👅 also if you notice the tounge it has alot involved on pronunciation , read , mark words you dont know the meaning of , and find their purpose of used so you improve you vocabulary one word could apply for diferent meaning beware on some languages be dedicated if want to success 🤖🧘‍♂️🙏 , life is about learning it never stops each day , get you self a dictionary 📚📖🔎 the only person can stop you is you self 💆‍♂️

Wow, i am Vietnamese, studied architecture(master course) in Milan, Italy since 2010. But at that time my English still needed to improve so i didn’t try to study Italian when i was in that ocean . Recently, i try an app called Rocket and I got really excited about that, about 70 days continuously to study Italian and the memory about Italy come back to me like a dream. I have a full time job back here, Vietnam, but afternoon i study Italian when do exercise then till late night enjoy Italian movies on Netflix, listen to a song in “la Vita dovanti a se “ - a must watch, it make me feel so connected with Italy.Wow , like you said, it is a passion. I got an idea about learning some more languages when i read a sentence: “the more languages the more the man he is” in high-school, but till now i have some initial steps to study languages. Khi nào Lindie đến Hồ Chí Minh, tôi sẽ làm hướng dẫn viên du lịch cho bạn! Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Janpanese, and maybe Hungarian (as you said with Vietnamese are the most interesting languages you’ve ever tried! Nice Chanel! Làm tốt lắm!
