i subscribe to the ability to notice part. I used to listen to Japanese before and wanted to understand everything perfectly before moving on, that's why my progress was very slow. Now, I just keep listening and listening even if I don't perfectly understand everything, but each time i do, I 𝔫𝔬𝔱𝔦𝔠𝔢 something and from there I learn. This was a great interview. What a wealth of information. As a multiracial woman that grew up in Queens, NY but moved away at 15yo, I have wanted to become a fluent Spanish speaker for many years. Some of my family is fluent and it's frustrating to me when I understand much of what they say but can't respond back. This is a goal of mine for this year and you two have greatly inspired me. Thank you.

- Accept the uncertainty for polyglots; How to maintain? you will forget what you learn but you can pick up quickly. - attitude to learn - time you spend with the language, not with its grammars. - the ability to notice how the language works. e.g That old audios listened again will notice some new things. structure, phrases - line by line listening and reading + do other things while listening to familiar audios. - Steve Kaufmann does not focus on the writing systems in most languages. (an interesting feature) - willing to let it in, let it come into you; trust your brain will learn. wash on my brain. - focus on comprehension and enjoying the language. Don't focus on many details. - learning a language is to learn the culture.

Great discussion. In particular the last part. Even though technology can solve lots of translaton needs, but high-tech translation software can not replace communication and connection between humans, in particualr lots of emotional intellegence related context can never be translated. So it worth the time to learn the language and learning foreign languages are enormously and largely rewarded in many ways.

I find the biggest challenge with learning another language is speaking. It is a topic I would love to hear experts such as Luca and Steve talk about in further detail. Reading and listening are great for comprehension and vocabulary acquisition, among other things, but once one removes context and has to rely solely on themselves to reproduce the language for the purposes of speaking, fluency becomes far more difficult than hearing and understanding the news or reading an article or short story.

I would like to say that we don't forget a language, the memory pointers are weak, or getting weak. Once you reinforce the pointer, the whole language comes back. I wish we stop using this phrase. Steve is one of the people I admire in life and a true inspiration, proving that languages can be learnt at any ages. Hi Luca. I'm using your translation method but when I do not know some words in the text what do I do? if I look up the words in the translation I end up copying them without thinking, how can this help me? Should I write them down? I would be super interested about what you do when you don't know words.

First of all I thank you two for this great oportunity. Luca, I can't follow easily everything while watching moveis or TV programs neverthanless, I understood all your discusstion in this video. So, I feel quite happy, although I think that I have to improve my English. How do I know my level?

i listen to it and then i read it and i listen again and i read and i try to hammer that sentence into my brain then i listen again later on i still don't understand what i understood when i was doing it sentence by sentence i now no longer understand but that's just part of the process i'm sure you have the same experience --- Just thought this nugget might mean something to someone because its very important for me (who beats up on himself for going through the same process :)

I am learning now the language that my fiancee speaks natively. I started it as a new year promise (for myself), but have been more serious since april/may. Do you have tips to do or what should not do? Ps. Thank god we fight using english and she curses with my own mother tongue.
