The Sigma brand came about in the early 1970s' as a way for the Martin Guitar Company to compete with their competition. At the time there were a number of companies, particularly those in Japan making very good copies of Martin guitars, so Martin created Sigma to do the same thing, but to their own manufacturing specifications.
This particular guitar is a Sigma DM-2, (one of the more popular Sigma offerings from the late 70s' through very early 90s'). The DM-2 is in essence a very budget conscious Martin D-18 copy with laminated mahogany back and sides, rosewood fretboard and bridge, and a spruce top that may be solid or may be laminated depending on who you ask.
