Lucero is probably my favorite band ever. Back when I struggled with alcoholism, I would play "Drink till were gone" over and over. And many more of their songs. Those days are far behind me.. I found the Lord during those dark days, But I will never ever forget about Lucero.

The song isn't really about Ohio. It's about an American who helped Castro overthrow Batista, then turned on Castro after he showed his socialist leanings, and was killed by firing squad. He was from Toledo. Search him up, amazing story. William Alexander Morgan.

I love this song.. Great writing.. It's a tribute to a real hero.. I saw his documentary somewhere and this song brought me back to it.. William Alexander Morgan was betrayed by Castro and the Communists in Cuba if I remember it right.. In hindsight, he should have gone home when he had the chance. Thanks for the song about factual history.. I love writing that was as well.. So I appreciate this...

William Morgan was an anti-communist fighting the oppressive Batista. Fidel Castro sold himself as an anti-communist which attracted many people to his revolution. But as Castro and Che won more battles their rhetoric turned to communism, many of Castro’s fighters turned against him but were executed. Morgan couldn’t return because his citizenship was revoked because of Castro’s regime’s war crimes.

“Betrayed by Castro” is a weird way to put it. He was executed by Castro and the Cuban government because he had turned traitor and begun supplying guns to CIA-backed rebels attempting to overthrow the government. Not really surprising that you would get shot for that.

A guy named William Morgan from Toledo, Ohio smuggled some guns to the pro-democracy Cuban rebels in the Escambray mountains. He ended up fighting with them and became known as the Yankee Comandante. When the rebels succeeded in ousting the dictator Batista, Castro took over and eventually jailed or killed anyone that opposed his consolidation of power and embrace of Communism. So Billy Morgan, an idealistic kid from Toledo who honestly wanted to try and do the right thing and fight for a good cause, ended up in front of a firing squad in La Cabana prison in Havana after having played a significant role in the revolution.
