Lucien is a legend. He pioneered countless tropes that would find popularity millennia afterward. Talk about being ahead of the curb. Lucien's greatest lie of all truly was never writing a sequel.

Hah! A copy of this is in my "read soon" pile. I'm not expecting Golden Age science fiction, and fully expect to miss many of the references, so your coverage is going to be a great help!

@@rcrawford42 My own version with some minor adaptations. Many of the Greek terms are unfamiliar or humours tongue-twisters. So I cloned my voice in an A.I. generator and used an A.I. image creator to suggest appropriate illustrations. I hope Lucian would approve 🙂

Thanks! I think many of the classical references are lost to most modern people. The ancient mindset was so different from our own reference points. If you want a further challenge read 'The Metamorphoses' by Lucian Apuleius 🙂

😂I cloned my voice in an A.I. generator to manage the crazy-unfamiliar Sci Fi ancient Greek! But I don't think the A.I. got the parenthesis (the Statue of Liberty was for the modern listener who might not know the size of the Colossus at Rhodes 😉).

It was a smart move to put the world-building exposition at the end, after the actual story. The narrative isn't disrupted and uninterested readers can stop at that point.

Yes, my own version 🙂 But with some minor explanations/additions. That 'Cloud Barrier' could be a Force Field and the 'Earth Viewing Well' a Telescope/Viewscreen. But what was Lucian and readers really imagining? - Who Knows?

@@drraoulmclaughlin7423 More or less off in the direction of space opera, with all nonhuman characters. Am in the process of bringing an old series up to code and eventually will fling them to the world.

This is a free translation from Lucan's text with additions reflecting the modern world, but nevertheless the insights of the myths are intriguing. The translator likes Star Wars and Dune mythology. A myth provides insights not facts about complex echoes of the past. So, it can not be used to provide us with an account of space war at the end of the first century CE. The account provides more insights about the efforts of the Romans exploring Africa, the Atlantic, and the Indian ocean. The Roman fleet of Laelius and that of Agrippa circumvated Africa. Trajan with his Indian Ocean fleet gave the Roman hegemony of the lands along the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean via diplomacy between 113 and 117. The account provides the length of the journey to the St. Lawrence gulf (about eighty days) and may echo real journeys. Juba, the ruler of Mauritania, explored the Atlantic Island and via Strabo provide hints about a place called the Antipodes. Nero's centurions brought back information about the African great lakes, which are echoed in Ptolemy's Geography.
