His manager for most of his career, the late Herbert Breslin, told me (and Pavarotti confirmed) that he had told both of the young tenors, Pavarotti and Domingo, whom he had taken on as clients, that the only way to win the American public was to do as Caruso had done in the 1910s: give concerts in every major city from coast to coast. Pavarotti loved concertizing, but Domingo did not and preferred making recordings and appearing on television shows. Breslin and Domingo parted on less than amicable terms, but the strategy Breslin had given both tenors proved to be a major factor in Pavarotti’s mega-stardom in the U.S.

I had the privilege of hearing Pavarotti sing this aria at a birthday celebration (I think it was the 70th) for Henry Mancini at UCLA - shortly before the latter's passing. I was about 30 feet from the stage, and I remember seeing that he was sturdily buile, slightly bowlegged, but his stage presence was simply majestic; He simply stood there onstage, replanted his feet between phrases and held a white silk scarf in one hand. His projection and volume were overwhelming. I remember the sound crew had trouble with his mike and for a couple of phrases, simply stepped to one side and sang without it while they replaced the cord, and to my amazement, as good as he sounded on a recording, he sounded even better live! My boss who was attending with me (we were in the music industry in those days!) said that he had heard Pavarotti live multiple times over the years and he'd discovered that the man's recordings, as sublime as they are, pale in comparison to hearing him live. So grateful I had that experience; I remember driving home in a blissful dreamlike state. I still have the program; there were many other performers, but he is who I will always remember.

His greatest gift... if you can pick just one, was his ability with pronunciation. No one in the history of opera, or music came close to his ability to pronounce the words more perfectly, succinctly and clearly. This required incredible control of his diaphragm and discipline breathing techniques. Most people feel it not only separated him from other sopranos but contributed to his ability to reach incredible levels of tone and pitch. Pavarotti never sang an aria or song, he captured the musics soul and transferee it to the audience so they could feel the emotion and live in the moment. No one has ever match him.

I saw him live in 1998, and your comment about hearing him live is solidly accurate. This recording is superb - yet live was a different dimension, which gave perspective to the power in his voice. A treasured and surreal moment which is beyond words to adequately convey, which I will go to the grave savoring.

Magnificent! I played the ending several times and remember something Maria Callas talked about. Here we have the artist achieving what he wants, Pavarotti cast a spell over us and gave us perfection. For a brief moment Pavarotti has us in his spell, the artist is fully in the moment and we are engulfed in his sound. Once the artist comes out of that moment, the ego takes over and you can see the expression and his demeanor change. It is time to show Pavarotti some Lincoln Center Love, New York! It may be overwhelming and for a few seconds he may feel humbled but the audience needs to be on their feet throwing flowers. Maria Callas was correct when she said this is what they expect from us and this is a treasure that can never be re-created. We are so lucky to have this. Thank you for sharing !

Nobody. But those that are close are in a realm all their own.

I personally prefer his renditions when he is slightly older than this. Around the period from 87' to 97'

I am watching this on March 15th, 2021. As of this date there are Two Hundred Sixty Eight people that have no soul. I normally would not make this statement but this performance is one of but a handful that there is no way you can listen and not be moved to chills, if not tears! Bravo, Mr. Pavarotti!
