Simply great old songs performed with good taste and skill

To the melody of “Is Not Olde England Grown New”. I absolutely love this. I don’t know the play, could anyone give me a bit more information? I’m a big fan of the City Waites and traditional English folk music, but I’m not familiar with this particular performance.

Who are the members of the band? They're great!

Well the female singer is Lucie Skeaping of Radio 3 fame. Her husband Roddy is seated with the violin. The lead singer on this one is Douglas Wootton - I'm not sure about the others. The ever evolving line-up had the Skeapings at its core. Wootton was an original member but sometimes took time out to do other things.

I guess the melody of "Is not olde England grown new" was back then inspired by Greensleeves - which was in many variations around (typical for (not just) that time btw.)

So little footage of the City Waites performing and so much of their catalogue deleted - mind you a lot of it was just the same tracks recorded over and over. Shame really - my aunt had their second album on vinyl and it got me into English folk at an early age.

Fighting for Old Charlie lyrics In sixteen hundred and forty two I knew what I had got to do Leave my home and my family too And fight for good old Charlie! [Chorus] Too-ra-Loo-ra-Loo-ra-li Too-ra-Loo-ra-Loo-ra-li Too-ra-Loo-ra-Loo-ra-li Fighting for old Charlie! In sixteen hundred and forty three Those roundheads they were after me But we were on winning spree Fighting for old Charlie! [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty four We fought a battle at Martson Moor Many men died to uphold the law Fighting for old Charlie! [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty five Our fortunes they did take a dive. Well I thank God I'm still alive Fighting for old Charlie! [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty six those Roundheads, they were up to tricks they'd got our army in fix Fighting for old Charlie! [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty seven Most of us were up in heaven The rest of us were down in Devon Fighting for old Charlie! [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty eight Cromwell's knocking on the gate But I'd gone, he's come too late Fighting for old Charlie [chorus] In sixteen hundred and forty nine Our stories come to the end of the line the king is dead, He's lost is head But we'll fight on for old Charlie [chorus] have fun lad:D
