OUR BREASTFEEDING & FORMULA FEEDING JOURNEY!
In today’s video, I’m doing a baby feeding Q&A about Milo’s entire feeding journey from the day he was born until now (~1 year old!). Thank you so much to Bobbie for sponsoring today’s video, and thank you for being the organic baby formula brand of Milo’s dreams!
GET THE BOBBIE STARTER BUNDLE: bit.ly/3ubTif2
Get a bundle deal on 2 cans of Bobbie! (Approximately 1 week of formula for a baby who’s exclusively formula-fed.)
In this video, I open up about our entire journey from the very start and why we chose Bobbie formula vs Similac. When Milo was first born, I planned to breastfeed him, but I wasn’t certain it was going to work out. To make sure we were covered, we ordered baby formula to have in the house. We were choosing between Bobbie Organic Infant Formula vs Similac Advance, and here is why I chose Bobbie!
Keep in mind, this video is just our PERSONAL feeding journey and my Bobbie formula review. These are the schedules that we followed under the supervision of Milo’s pediatrician and my desire for organic baby formula that’s modeled after breast milk. Every baby is different, so please make sure you speak to your child’s pediatrician to figure out the feeding plan that works best for your family.
CHAPTERS:
00:00-00:49 - Introduction
00:50-01:28 - Breastfeeding my newborn
01:29-03:27 - Bobbie Organic Infant Formula
03:28-04:20 - Bobbie Organic Infant Formula vs. Similac advance
04:21-06:50 - Introducing formula & bottles
06:51-07:21 - Milo’s schedule (0-4 weeks)
07:22-08:26 - Milo’s schedule 4-12 weeks
08:27-11:00 - Milo’s schedule (12 weeks-7 months)
11:01-13:03 - Mastitis
13:04-15:56 - Dropping feeds (MOTN pump)
15:57-16:41 - The end of our breastfeeding journey
16:42-18:17 - Making a bottle of formula
18:18-18:44 - Future plans for feeding
18:45-19:43 - Introducing solids
19:44-21:15 - Bobbie Organic Infant Formula discount
Some other reasons why I chose Bobbie Organic Infant Formula:
- I wanted organic baby formula
- I loved that the whey to casein ratio is similar to the ratio in mature breast milk making it easier on baby’s tummies
- Pasture-raised cows from Organic Valley
- It’s USDA organic and has a non-GMO formula
Choosing which formula to give your baby can be daunting, so I understand the stress parents might be under!! I hope I was able to answer all of your questions in this video, but as always, please leave a comment down below to let me know if I missed anything. I’m happy to answer more questions about our breastfeeding journey and our formula-feeding journey.

I’m not writing this comment to criticise Lucie or discredit her bfing experience but there are a few things mentioned in this video which I think pregnant or new mamas might worry about so I wanted to clarify a view things: - colostrum- the amount you leak in pregnancy isn’t an indication of your milk supply so don’t worry if you’re not! - milk coming in- this can take up to around a week on average for milk to come in terms of full leaking breasts with white milk. However you will have colostrum from the start. Many mums worry about the idea of their milk not being there but it is extremely rare for women to have genuine supply issues. Supply will dwindle if baby is being given formula, as breasts work on a demand basis (every time baby or pump is on breast, it is signalling to the breast to produce more) - there is no need to take formula to the hospital if in UK- they will have some if needed, but that scenario is rare. Baby could be tube or pipette fed expressed breast milk if unable to latch i.e in NICU. - every time baby is given formula mum would need to pump to keep up supply - a four hour feeding schedule and sleeping through the night can of course work for some babies but is very unlikely to happen with breastfed babies and can affect supply. - breastfed babies shouldn’t be given more than 4oz in a bottle at a time and these should be pace fed if trying to maintain breastfeeding as primary feeding source - if breasts have warning signs of mastitus then feed from that breast as much as possible - if breasts have an oversupply then try not to pump it out as this teaches breasts to produce more milk - amount pumped is not indicative of amount baby is drinking. Some mums may not manage to get an oz pumping but exclusively breastfed their thriving healthy babies - it is recommended not to pump or introduce bottles until 6 weeks to reduce risk of oversupply and mastitus and bottle preference There are lots of groups like La Leche League with evidence based breastfeeding advice :)

But also: it is okay as a mom to not „try your hardest“ in order to breastfeed for as long as possible. If you need those 4h sleep windows to feel sane to care for your baby and those result in your supply dropping and needing to switch to formula a little earlier compared to feeding every 2h during the night - that is OKAY too.

@@Lenchen6695 of course. My comment is just aimed at people who want to continue to ebf. If they want to combi feed or formula feed then that’s fine of course!

These are all very, very important points! I would also add that direct breastfeeding on demand is the best way to feed a breastfed baby in order to maintain supply. Schedules are unnecessary. Even if your milk hasn't "come in" in the first few days, baby is still getting colostrum which is highly nutritious, so it is generally unnecessary to supplement with formula.

It's really good to hear a mom talk about plans changing when it comes to feeding/formula/breast milk as your family experiences it in real life. Super proud of you for sharing this journey and making the best decisions for you and your baby!!

I'm a few months ahead of you and I loved using Bobbie! It was also really nice during the formula shortage to know we had a subscription coming. I'm still breastfeeding at 15 months and I don't think I'd ever had made it this far if I didn't introduce formula! Everyones journey is different but I'm happy to see more people explaining how they combo feed - so often it feels like it's all breast or formula but it can be a wonderful combination!

Deciding to wean at 9 months....selfish? Absolutely not. You did the hard work for nearly a year and gave Milo an important headstart toward solids. Be proud of those 9 months.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us! I imagine that can be a little intimidating to share with the internet. We love our Bobbie too! It has been such a major blessing for our family. My milk supply (despite desperately trying to increase it) pretty quickly dried out which was devastating for me but bobbie was such a blessing becuase it gave me comfort that we were giving him what I felt was a truly high quality formula if I couldn't produce milk. Plus the subscription made it so we never had to struggle through the formula shortage so it was an even BIGGER blessing for us since my milk supply couldn't keep him full.

Ps it's so frustrating to build tour life around feeding your baby in this world, starting from needing to work a lot of the time, and ending with how inconvenient the world is for BFing mums (no baby rooms, etc) But it's also OK to keep doing it for the sake of you child🤗 I find it really hard, and some would say to stop if this is so hard, but I choose to put my life on pause because I want to ebf my child

Thanks for this amazing recap !!!! I think you forgot to mention he was biting you when the supply dropped :) That's a good point for formula! Breastfeeding my 10 months old now, never have given formula to any of my 3 babies, glad I never had to chose between all the brands ! Mama friends are so precious to give us advice though, I like that you mention your mama's community, this is a crucial support as a woman too. Always a pleasure to witness how you managed this beautiful journey, congratulations to the three of you ! Happy belated birthday to Milo !!! I wonder if you noticed an improvement in your attempt to gain weight when you stopped brestfeeding? Take good care

Hi in the UK to give powdered formula you need to add boiling hot water to kill any bacteria I was just wondering is it not the same advice in the US. Feeding is such a personal journey thanks for sharing.

Are you planning on teaching him several languages and sign language? Do they run allergy tests on babies so young or do people develop allergies through there life?
@luciebfink
@luciebfink Жыл бұрын
YES we are teaching him sign language - would love to make a video on this! Also, his nanny speaks French as a first language so he's learning 2 languages and knows many words in French too!! And allergens are tricky but you are told to introduce common allergens through food around age 6 months and see if there are reactions.

This may be a silly question but what kind of water filter do you use? Is purified water ok? Do you need to boil it prior and the refrigerate? My little guy is almost 8 month and my supply dipped drastically after my first pp period. Doing a little research and it's all bit daunting so I appreciate you breaking down your journey!
