Everything you wanted to know about dragons, and then some! This theory iceberg will focus on the dragons themselves - their origin, their nature, their interactions with humans, the people who carry blood-of-the-dragon, and all magics and magical artifacts associated with dragons - dragon’s eggs, dragonbinder horns, fused stone, dragonglass, Valyrian steel, and more.

I always assumed the wounds on balerion were from him clawing the worms out of his skin. As we know, there isn't much that can harm him, but we know he's strong enough to hurt himself

I think they're at the very least the original dragon lord lines or the names of subspecies of dragon eg Balerion might be the black dragon line or something like that.

Or, if you want to go with the idea of GEOTD using their various slave races as “volunteers” to shove into the dragons - and then the proto-Valyrians escaping during the Long Night and following societal collapse - then it’s a way of commemorating the deceased ancestors

My fun theory is Morning, the last pink dragon hatched in Westeros, isn't sickly and small but the dragon equivalent of a chihuahua. Royal women often had lap dogs as companions and status symbols, hence dragons being bred to be "smaller than a cat".

A fun theory, yet there is absolutely no precedence for it. The Dance of the Dragons ended in 131 AC, with four known dragons remaining, and the Last Dragon died 22 years after that. None of the dragons before the Dance were specifically bred to be small as pets.

Going off aircraft analogues: Ground Attack Dragon: bred for thickest scales to resist arrows and spears. Fighter Dragon: bred for speed and agility to take down Recce Dragons from rival houses. Recce/Patrol Dragon: similar to a High-Endurance Messenger Dragon, but with different equipment: dual saddles with a secure means of carrying and using a glass candle. Couple of other things: Eye-protection: any motorcyclist, let alone pilot, will tell you that travelling fast through the air can rapidly make you blind, whether by bugs, rain, or even just cold. We know they've got small amounts of (doubtless expensive) glass, so it's hard to believe that a pair of goggles wouldn't be amongst a dragon-rider's most prized possessions. Navigation: again, any pilot will tell you that it's VERY easy to get lost over unfamiliar terrain, even when you can see it, never mind cloud, rain and darkness. Dragon riders going any distance should have map pockets strapped to their legs. How you keep them dry and swap maps in-flight is interesting without velcro and clear plastic pockets: maybe you'd have special dragon-rider maps drawn on leather with waterproof dyes, and some kind of clever system of cords to keep them attached, but allow you to at least flip them over if not turn pages.

My guess is Aenar's role in the Doom wasn't just hiring the Faceless Men. If it were that easy someone else could have done it. There's more than one Valyrian Steel sword. There's more than a few factions with that much gold. But as a dragon lord, Aenar likely knew the identities of many of the mages who oversaw the Fourteen Flames, layouts of the networks of tunnels within the volcanoes, schedules for where the mages would be and when, how dangerous they were in a fight (at the height of Valyrian power, magic would have been incredibly strong there, so these fire mages would have been INCREDIBLY powerful), etc.

10:06 12/10 agree Nettles echoes historic Valerian dragon taming. I love how GRRM will flesh out a bit of worldbuilding or magic in a seemingly unrelated spot, only for it to come alive from a different perspective. I remember how the Varamyr Six Skins prologue exploded in my mind when Jon died - a nice little roadmap of how Jon could come back.

I dont have any logistic answers for you, idk where it was or what its been doing this whole time. All i know is that the book plainly states that Summer looks up into the sky and sees a giant snake with wings that breathes fire. To me, thats a dragon period end of story. Just dont ask me how it got there i have no idea lol.🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m so angry I missed this LS. This has to be one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made David. It has me theory crafting a bit honestly.. I’m no lore expert like yourself but I wonder the logistics of maintaining Valyria people and their Dragons .. no possible way they had enough sheep pig cattle to feed mega empire plus (I’m assuming) hundreds of dragons !! Some even larger than the black dread . I wonder with all their dark magics if they had a way to FUEL the dragons outside of actual meat, and MAYBE this could be why those dragons grew larger than the black dread did .

One terrifying thing I thought of is the Targaryen were a middling house yet they conquered a nation with a fraction of their former strength. Their Dragons might have not been the best bred or the largest by far. This begs the question, what kind of monsters were the "royal" Dragons, it would only make sense the larger houses had the strongest Dragons.

I think it really says a lot about the Valyrians that in their conflict with the Rhoynar, they initially only sent 3 dragons with 100k soldiers. Only to whip out 300 dragons afterward. Why not use 300 dragons as your opening move? You probably wouldn't even need the ground troops. They sent 100k soldiers and only 3 dragons because after being in power for so long, it's likely Valyrian politicians could barely be bothered to wage their own wars, instead choosing to sacrifice tens of thousands of their subjects (and also have the war take way, way longer due to moving ground troops around instead of flying dragons over) because that way they don't have to get off the couch. It was only after the Rhoynish victory that the Valyrians got serious about it, fearing that being defeated would cause more rebellions and so the Rhoyne needed to be completed glassed. But ultimately, being embarrassed is what actually got the dragonlords off the couch.

I think the main way to tell the difference between dragon and wyvern skeletons is simply size. Dragons are way bigger than their wyvern cousins. If all the found skeletons around the world are all of juvenile/small sized dragons then they are probably wyverns. But, if there are huge ancient skeletons that are poping up all over then they have to be dragons and the mystery continues.
@Fenrisaiyan
@Fenrisaiyan 3 ай бұрын
the talk of dragon and wyvern bones got me thinking too far😅 . So calcium compounds are usually white i.e bones, shells, limestone so I looked up if there is a black calcium compound. Calcium phosphide is a black solid so we can guess that is what dragon bones are.

I assumed Quaithe can't tell Danerys the simple truth because she is bound by the Church of Starry Wisdom to NOT say certain things AND because others are listening. I also think that the dragons have access to the astral plane via the glass candles or any obsidian. I'm thinking the dragons get sucked into the astral plane if attacked with dragon glass just like the White walkers/others. Basically the obsidian is the magic gateway between life and death.

To suggest that a human soul/mind has to be bonded to a dragon in order for a descendant to bond to it is GENIUS notion… But it also infers that Drogan wouldn’t be the intake of Khal Drogo- but Reagal (her son, for the genetic reasons…) Then it’s a guessing game of whose souls is in which other dragon. Maybe someone from the khalasar who is descending from Drogo’s family could claim a dragon. Miri Mas Dur is of the Lamb Men… what if she has some descendant like Nettles?? Lots of fun options for GRRM to play with.

We're assuming the blood sacrifices have to be the dead in the funeral pyre. If it's just someone who died recently or for Danerys to acquire the dragons there are a ton of possibilities like Viserys, for example. It's also possible that GRRM is pulling a Harry Potter and part of Danerys soul is in one or all of the dragons after the pyre.

What if Valyrians are actually the parasitic wyrms. The valyrians could have incubated the wyrms in soaves or other people to create the first of the dragon blood valyrians. Making them quite literally the blood of the dragon. They also could have taken those parasitic fire wyrms and planted them in wyverns to create dragons. Then planted the wyrms in themselves to create valyrians, which would make dragons and valyrians just mutated wyrms.

hearing the timeline of the Valyrian civilization discussed early on makes me wonder if dragonriders as a whole were never supposed to flourish into a people, but rather, were intended only as weapons against the first Long Night, a company of champions rather than one sole figure. The tale of Azor Ahai then being not a reference to one last hero, but the description of how dragons & dragonriders came to be, which would also explain why there are so many Azor Ahai across Planetos. It might be a cute reference & parallel to the inspiration for the Valyrians, the Melnibonéans, who began as glorious figures before sprawling into a decadent & complex society ~hits play & loads my current save of CK2 AGOT~ ✨☄️🐉☺️⚔️🛡️✨

Saying Valyria is like Rome and the 3rd reich combined makes it sound like Rome wasn’t just as bad. They didn’t have as high tech experimentation but they were just as brutal and dehumanizing, they were just a lot longer ago and a lot of people give them a free pass for being “important to western culture” or some other nonsense. Check the line about the Roman’s from god emperor of dune if you need a good poetic phrasing

The botany of Valyria thing mentioned around 18:35 is a clear easter egg pointing at the Voynich Manuscript, though idno if it was intended by Martin or Petersen. Either way, I wouldn't lok into it too much, it's clearly an easter egg without deeper meaning, like Sezame Street characters or Chthulu stuff.

Do you think the amount of valyrian blood and dna a person has, it will positively relates to the strength of the bond between the dragon and the dragonroder? Or if a dragon rider whose dragon hatches to them has a stronger bond than a person that claims it? Do the first rider of a dragon has a stronger bond than the other riders of that dragon? I have so many questions and no answers to these questions.

2:07:14 I think you might be missing something here (and you might have brought it up later idk I haven't watched the whole thing yet) but notable that Jae-man was potentially chill with executing a slave and using her blood (and considering she was a bed slave, also being a slave master who raped his slaves) but AFTER the Doom, was willing to throw himself between a slave and a whip. You posit that he was an abolitionist, but could it be that he discovered that the destruction of all he knew was revenge for the horrible slavery of Valyria? Perhaps when he saw a slave getting whipped like that, he was overcome with survivors guilt as he had carried out similar punishments on slaves and that was the cause (in his mind) for the Doom, or he was terrified that the punishment of slaves would cause another extinction event. It does seem strange to me that a supposed abolitionist would 1) own "bed slaves" 2) execute a slave for a crime seemingly no one else witnessed and 3) record this for seemingly very little reason. Like sir, this is a wen(series of records containing tons of otherwise lost information on ancient plants)dy's

after thinking about it further, it's possible the doom changed his opinion. but it's also important to remember that society shapes people's worldviews, so even many "abolitionists" in the US still thought of black people as lesser... they just didn't think it was right to enslave them. That cultural propaganda sinks in deep. So this gardener Valyrian, he might have been one who was less inclined to "abusing" slaves but was still inculcated to the idea of Valyrian supremacy.
@gildedgems
@gildedgems 3 ай бұрын
@@DavidLightbringerI agree with you that society shapes our views, but perhaps in a different way. You liken this gardener to abolitionists for black American slavery, but the slavery in Valyria is not like that. The type of chattel slavery in the US is unknown to most of the world, or worlds, in Planatos' case. Meaning there is not a targeted race in Essos that was considered the "worst race" like black people were. Valyrians did consider themselves "the best race" but the type of slavery they engaged in was still much more similar to slavery pre- the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. That's not to say there weren't abolitionists pre-black chattel slavery, but that the black chattel slavery we tend to be most familiar with and the otherwise forced labor slavery that was most common throughout history and which is depicted here aren't very comparable My point here is that our gardener would have at most thought slaves were lesser because they were NOT Valyrians, but he would have thought about everyone non-Valyrian. Slaves were the lowest but that was because they were slaves, not because they were any particular race. A slave's cousin who was free for whatever reason would not have been thought as low as a slave simply because he is not a slave, while a freed black person would have was still a black person (and frequently could have been forced back into slavery at any moment solely bc of that). It's possible there were even Valyrian slaves, because slave was a status and not something pre-ordained by something like skin color. So again what is the most likely reason a Valyrian who was comfortable 1) owning a slave 2) likely raping a slave 3) executing a slave for a crime seemingly no one else witnessed 4) using her blood to his benefit and 5) recording all that without much of a second thought... Would have such a change of heart after the Doom that he was willing to die to stop a slave being punished? We might come to different conclusions here but it's something to consider

The ghost grass in Ashai is where spirits of the damned go so silk grass might be where upper class dragon riders or dragon bonded go. I think this is why he was forced to kill her. Not because of the laws per se but some effect of the grass. Juxtaposing the story of his death against this makes it obvious eating the grass was of some import. The grass was not a staple but a garnish-- maybe eaten ritualistically. Also it reminded me of the white worms

I don’t think there’s any connection between Aenar and the Doom besides Daenys dreams. House Lannister aquires Brightroar 100 years before Aenar moves house Targaryen to Dragonstone. And Aenar supposedly had slaves too. So the timeline doesn’t work at all. And Aenar didn’t seem to be this big-time abolitionist. In Deep Geek’s explination about the Doom is pretty good imo.
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 3 ай бұрын
wrong (with all due respect). it says Brightroar came into possession of the Lannisters "in the century before the Doom," not "a century." That century is when most / all of the Valyrian steel would have been sold to Westerosi people; Dragonstone was founded as a Valyrian trading post to access Westeros about a century before the Doom. Crucially, Aenar took over Dragonstone twelve years before the Doom, so the timing could absolutely line up. Plus, we have the Valyrian prophecy of Lannister gold bringing the doom of man, which implies Lannister gold is involved in the Doom. And as for Aenar's "slaves," We can assume they became the small folk of Dragonstone, because we never hear about slaves on Dragonstone and it is outlawed by all Westerosi law and custom. So what he did was to save his household servants, tutors, etc etc according the Roman style slavery system the Valyrians seem to have had along with the "feeding people to the mines" slavery. If Aenar has used slaves to, say, mine Dragonstone, we'd have heard of that. there's also a ton more evidence for the theory which you can find in my video called The Doom Was an Inside job, if you're interested. I've watched IDGs video but disagree with his conclusion. It wasn't the maesters.

Ok i disagree about the timing but I gotta respect your opinion on that. In the century before the Doom is a good catch. But the Valyrians set up Dragonstone 200 years before the Doom not 100 years. The selling of Valyrian steel is mentioned when the Free-Hold itself is in posession of Dragonstone before Aenar arrives. We don’t ever hear about house Targaryen being tied to any of the Valyrian technology aside from Blackfire and Dark Sister. Like no house that owns Valyrian steel shouts out Aenar ever. I’m not sure what you mean when you say Aenar’s slaves became the smallfolk. The smallfolk say that the Cannibal made its lair even before the Targaryens got there. There were certainly smallfolk there before house Targaryen. And i’ll just say once Aenar gets to Dragonstone we don’t hear about him interacting with the Free-Hold like that anymore. The maesters are the ones interacting with the Free-Hold by that point imo. The maesters have access to the Lannister gold. The maesters have access to the Free-Hold.

Is slavery really frowned upon more so than incest in Westeros? Why than would House Targaryen concern themselves if the Westerosi cared about them having slaves when House Targaryen clearly didn’t concern themselves at all if the Westerosi cared about them practicing incest? I’m thinking that had Aenar freed his slaves then those slaves probably reacted the same way the ones that Daenerys freed reacted to their being free. I think Aenar’s slaves probably wanted to stay with House Targaryen.
