Rhaegar must be mistaken, but he knew more or less where things were going. He saw a girl, and he thought of Rhaenys his daughter, when it is actually Daenerys; he saw a Boy named Aegon, and then assumed that this must be his son, when it is actually Young Griff (aka Aegon Blackfyre, a pretender pretending to be Aegon), and finally that missing third head is the one Dany has to look for: Jon Snow, for he is lost, for he is the one that does not know his lineage.

I believe that the direct link of the prophecy going from King Aegon to Rhaenyra will be broken due to the Dance. Aegon II doesn't know, and Rhaenyra will probably tell Jacerys, but be unable to pass it on to Aegon III. The prophecy will be lost until Daeron II's reign, with Aerys rediscovering parts of it in books and Daeron the Drunk dreaming it constantly. Then with Aemon, Egg and some dreams the prophecy reaches Rhaegar.
@crowningtesla2 жыл бұрын
I could also see the dagger playing a role as a family heirloom. Aegon II has it right now, so he or his heirs could find the text on it even if they don't know the full context of the Dream
@johnpotts83082 жыл бұрын
Since Rhaegar seems to have read it somewhere, I guess one of the Kings told the high Maester (who wrote it down). Since transmission from King to heir had proved problematic several times historically, it would make sense to entrust it to an outsider who would be (assumed to be) neutral in any Targaryen civil war.

It was 100% Bloodraven who rediscovered the prophecy, or atleast the majority of it. He was Aerys's Hand, is into lost/ancient knowledge and most importantly was possibly the most powerful greenseer of his era. If anyone could do it, it would him. I agree with Preston Jacobs that someone was sending Maekar's children telepatchic dreams to direct their actions. I think only Bloodraven would do such a thing.

I think the prophecy being lost during Robert's Rebellion. Think about it - on the Targaryen side, Rhaegar and Aerys die before they can tell anyone, and on the Stark side, Rickard and Brandon bite it before telling Ned. Hence why everyone at the beginning of ASOIAF thinks that the Night King is long dead or even a nonexistent story to terrify kids with.
@chafrey85322 жыл бұрын
The gold of casterly rock bringing down the Valyrians always felt like a reference to jaime killing Aerys wearing his Lannister gold armor and toppling the dynasty. Obviously it could work on multiple levels and still involve the faceless men and the end of the Valyrian empire. Also a part of me wants to believe that it isn’t aegon that is the dragon dreamer of the 3 but actually Rhaenys. For one: naming the prophecy a song of ice and fire sounds more like something Rhaenys would come up with over aegon. Also maybe she did survive her “death” in dorne. And was able to talk to nymor about the prophecy? Maybe that has something to do with the letter he sent to aegon? If aegon was spending 9 out of every 10 nights with Rhaenys maybe he just wanted to be the first to hear about her dreams. I don’t really have any evidence for any of this it just feels very George to me to not have aegon be the complete super hero. It would also add some more tragedy to her death if aegon was using her dreams to help himself prepare for the coming war and a stupid war with dorne ends up killing her.

I definitely feel like there will be sort of a “Second Dance” in the main story. George is setting up conflict between Dany and Faegon and there’s been talk of Faegon possibly acquiring (stealing) one of Dany’s dragons. Not only would this parallel Rhaenyra vs Aegon II as a woman who feels she’s the rightful heir vs a man who has been brought up to be the heir by the schemers around him, Dany is bonded with Drogon (a BLACK dragon) and Faegon will probably end up with Rhaegal (a GREEN dragon for the greens) or Viserion (a cream and GOLD dragon which would match up with Aegon II’s sigil). I just feel like it lines up too perfectly.

I'm hoping HotD will show us how the Targaryen infighting made the prophecy fade from memory for a while, because thematically that would parallel ASOIAF (the books): instead of coming together for the greater good, people fight over power and a chair.

Now because of the death of Rhaegar she was forced to pass this secret to Ned. And Ned wasn't able anymore to pass it to Jon. This is the "broken promise" of Ned. The Lost "Song of Ice and Fire" prophecy. The north remembers... Not anymore. " The thought of Jon filled Ned with a sense of shame, and a sorrow too deep for words. It makes a lot of sense that Visenya and Rhaenys definitely knew, hence why Visenya wanted so much a son and for Maegor to rule and why she may have resorted to magic to do so. Aenys was so weak she not only knew that kingdom was in danger but all of the world, she may have been blindsided by that and ignore a lot of Maegors cruelty she probably knew ,if she really used magic to conceive him, that, that was the price she paid to have him

Atleast he was good and obedient son to her. I will blame Visenya for hardening Maegor to such extend that he became extremely cruel. Also I don't think he was born with black magic, instead after he was "comatose" for sone time after trail against faith militants that he lost his mind in true sense. Maybe he was resurrected by fire witch and lost a part of his soul, hence became so cruel... otherwise whatever he had done in his life was on Visenya's command. Being Targaryen is tough lol

Hey David I've been thinking about the hatching of Dany's dragons in light of House of the Dragon. I've actually been wondering why a sacrifice was needed to bring them back when before the dance they didn't need it. Seeing the increasingly poor treatment of Targaryen women since adapting the Andal customs, I think the betrayal of Rhaenyra was the last straw. We don't actually know what Gods they worshiped before the conquest but it should have been some of the Valyrian gods, possibly one related to the hatching of dragons. I think those gods would be feminine and that is why they turned their backs on the Targaryens for continuously shunning their matriarchs. After Rhaenyra a specific human sacrifice was needed to appease them so they can be granted the favor of dragons once again. I'm just guessing here but I find it interesting how the end of the dragons was because of the usurpation of a woman and their rebirth is because of a woman, both of whom had dragon babies moments before it all started.

What do you think is the underlying reason for why the Targaryens have prophetic dreams? It feels like answering that question is at the root of understanding Aegon's prophecy. Given that the best analog seems to be the first-men-descendants with green sight, it would seem fitting as a way of tying the Starks/first men and the Targaryens/valyrians into a shared history - they're both offspring of one super magical person/thing, and that's why they have these visions and others don't. I'm curious to know what people think about why Targaryens have these visions other than them just being more magical than other folks.

I’m not sure I completely like Aegons prophecy, it’s definitely cool and adds more to the magical side of things. I’ve always thought of the conquest as just three flying Ds wanting to be the rulers and making it everyone else’s problem. The prophecy makes the war that Aegon started at least somewhat justified since it helped save the world. It takes away from the how when the lords play the game of thrones it’s the common people that lose in my opinion but maybe I’m over reacting.
@DavidLightbringer2 жыл бұрын
Think about it as heightening the need for stability and peace, once the Targs have the throne. Any ruler owes his or her kingdom peace and stability, and now that pressure is even greater for all the Targ kings because they know there is so much riding on it

Do you think the prophecy was that big of a deal to Rhaenyra during the Dance if she knew about it or do you think it's a show thing to make her more sympathetic
@DavidLightbringer2 жыл бұрын
A bit of both. There should be a good line of transmission from Aegon to Viserys and therefore Rhaenyra, so she should actually know in book canon too. It does make her more sympathetic, which I like because it’s done sensibly. The maesters wouldn’t know about any prophecy based motivations of the Targs.
@J.Wiki232 жыл бұрын
My Theory is that it wasn't Aegons Dream but Rhaenys. She spent the most time "bedwise" with Aegon & I like the idea of All 3 Targs having a piece of their Lineage, Aegon with Blackfyre, Visenya with Dark Sister & Rhaenys with the Catspaw Dagger, seems Meta for Aegon to have both Blackfyre & The Dagger, would add more meaning to the Dagger after her death. I like the idea of Aegon & Rhaenys being a direct parallel to Gaemon the Glorious & Daenys the Dreamer, Aegon being the Conqueror but Rhaenys being the True Dreamer, also the mysticism of Targaryan woman, Visenya being almost witch-like, Daenys the Dreamer & Even Heleana Targ both being Prothetic Dreamers. When Rhaenys Died it would give Aegon reason to enshrine "Her Dream/Prophecy" on to "Her Dagger." I prefer the idea of the Woman being the True Dreamers within the family & the Men being the ones to act on thier Dreams. The Male Targs like Daeron the Drunk, Viserys The Peaceful & potentially Bloodraven are cursed by their Dreams whereas the woman's Visions almost offer a glimpse into better. The Men Dream of Destruction & Act on it thus cursing their actions regardless of what side of a Prophecy they believe in, whereas the Woman Targs Dream of potential hope to save their Family or The Fall of Man. Aegon gets too much credit and history favors the Conqueror, Rhaenys being the Dreamer would add depth to the Trio & even Aegon himself.

I know GOT made up the Arya twist wholesale. BUT to-be-somewhat-fair, the prophecy doesn't, (as far as we know), say the prince who was promised will literally do any killing/collective disruption. Only that they will lead the army that fights the Others. Actually it's kinda funny.......it just implies A Targaryen, so whether it's Jon or Dany doesn't matter. To say nothing about a hilarious possible interpretation of how things work in the HotD/GOT verse where possibly Dany is the figure of Aegon's prophecy, but Jon is still Azor Ahai.

I am currently writing an ongoing fantasy book series where a divided empire is attacked by an invading horde of monsters. For the main character, I drew inspiration from several fantasy heroes like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Like Jon Snow, my main protagonist is the rightful heir to the throne, unites the land when it is most divided against a common enemy, and wields a sword made of special metal. Like Daenerys Targaryen, he genuinely cares about his people, rides a dragon, and becomes a leader of armies.

It is interesting how Rhaegar and Aegon are both described as being aware of this prophecy, since they are described in similar fashions. Both are described as not being well known by even those who knew them best

I also feel that the black oily stone in the Hightower’s foundation and the throne of the Iron Islands must be Valyrian in origin. Evidence of past colonies to potentially prevent the the Doom of Valyria and the Doom of Men. BUT the children were able to fight them off and thats why it never lasted. Also, it could be evidence of Valyrian ancestors from the Great Empire of the Dawn doing what they could with the remainder of their strength after the Long Night.

Idk where I heard it (maybe here), but there is a theory about how it was Rhaenys' dagger and that she was the dreamer of the conqueror siblings . And when she died he retrieved it and pass it down to their son and heir with the prophecy , leading to the confusion that he was the dreamer and that he was the original owner of the dagger. I really liked the symbolism of 3 siblings, 3 dragons, 3 valyrian blades .

There’s no evidence to support that that I can think of

I know everybody thinks that that is Rhaegar in Dany's visions, but.....what if it's not Rhaegar? What if it's Aerion and he's talking to Valeana? I only mention this because the woman is not described but we know that Elia had a terrible second birth and was considered frail and sickly and having Aegon almost killed her, and I'm not so sure she would have been able to nurse her newborn so quickly (and I think Dany would have mentioned a frail looking person). Maybe that part is a) the decision to have Rhaenys (which makes more compassionate sense than Rhaegar telling his half-dead wife that he needs another kid), and b) the decision to prepare Aegon to take over Westeros, which is why Aerion notes that the name is fit for a king, because he would be the first king. And then Aegon dreamt a little bit more information regarding the northern threat (it also explains a little more why Aegon married both sisters when he didn't "need" to. His father told him there needed to be three heads). I think knowing this more completely would also explain why Rhaegar moved away from deciding that he was the Prince, because he realized he was more Aerion than Aegon. I also just would like the fact that Rhaenys got some of her love of music from her father.

Does Aerion play the harp then? I mean I hear but that’s definitely Rhaegar. George hadn’t even invented the Blackfyres at that point, let alone Aenar and Valaena

@@DavidLightbringer Are you suggesting that he needed to conceive of either of Aegon/Viseyna/Rhaenys parents as like...actual characters in order to write this? He would only need a long-standing prophecy and Dany's connection to Aegon imo. But yeah, it's Rhaegar and GRRM simply hadn't thought enough about how he was writing Elia for this to make sense retrospectively. That's the simplest view. I just think an alternate view makes equal watsonian sense

i always thought that Danny's vision was actually of Jon's birth, and Rhaegar was talking to Lyanna... I think I wrote that in Gray area's comments once and she nearly reached through the screen and punched me lol 🤣

it’s definitely Elia with their two kids lol

How did the followers of R'hllor get mixed into this? Melisandre is sent by the Red Temple in Volantis and Kinvara later (who we see in season 6 , but never again).Thoros mixed in this too, to keep and eye on things and urge preparation for the coming war? Seems the followers of the Red God know what is going to happen. Weill Essos send help to Westeros?

Speculation: a fire (chaos/life) deity has influenced things going back 1000 years, making the old valerians dragonkin, then blowing up the place to force the Tagaryens to move to westeros, all in a cosmic chess game to combat its opposite ice (entropy/death) deity in an eternal conflict or Song of Ice and Fire
@DenyEverythingXD2 жыл бұрын
The prophecy about the doom of man coming from Westeros does explain why the Valyrian's never invaded Westeros. Probably seemed too dangerous. Also probably why they made Dragonstone their most western outpost. To keep an eye on a potential threat from the west.

It funny how everyone missed then in the World book the bit about Valyrian Priests- seeing though made me remember it. It always seemed obvious to me that the Others and Dragons had a link because the dragons just seemed so utterly OP for random lords. Which was honestly what I thought they do in the show having her greatest army crippled by the war with the others not a dumbass pirate
@ashmeadowphoenix2 жыл бұрын
I think the opposite makes sense. The dragons are older then the white walkers, and yes OP, and the white walkers were created to guard against the dragons.
