I just realized the parallel between the description of the waters leading to Oldtown and Hardhome: dead things in the wood (here dead things among the wooden ships) and dead things in the water. Plus the crows eating the dead bodies combines the imagery of the wildlings eating their own dead with Sam drinking a Maester Aemon cocktail. Not only is this pretty creepy potential foreshadowing (maybe Oldtown will be another Hardhome), but it further solidifies the NK symbolism for Euron who leaves only dead things in his wake to trouble the living.

Was the Horn of Winter broken in two, or just broken so that it could not be blown? Also, wasn't it mentioned in someone's vision about the sea rising up to destroy the towers in Old Town? This will be cutting it close for Sam. The one possible good news is, if Sam finds the magic that the Maester has been looking for to fight against Euron, perhaps it's Sam that has to perform whatever it is in order to save Old Town. It may not stop Euron's forces but it could stop the wall of water that the vision mentioned maybe? Jon's going to have to get back in his body quickly too. He needs to organize the North. Sam needs to get the Horn up there repaired. It will be needed while everyone falls back to Harrenhal area. Whatever is going to cause the Long Night is on the cusp of happening in the story. If it's meteors falling from the sky then that could cause the wall of water that the vision spoke of regarding destroying the towers of Old Town. I'm so excited. I hope the book gets released later this year, or early next.

Davos's description of the walls of the Merman's Court, combined w/a lazy Leo jab, makes me think Sam will play a pivotal role in Euron's downfall, possibly even kill him. Which is consistent w/his occasional brave act. "Behind the dais, a kraken and a grey leviathan were locked in battle beneath the painted waves". (Leo upon seeing Sam) "The citadel is not what it was...They will take anything these days...Dornishmen, pig boys, cripples, cretins, and now a black clad whale. Interesting how Mace Tyrell accepts Willas as heir, a guy who seems to have a lot in common with Sam, while Randyll rejects a son who is non-martial. It could have been in the Tarly's best interest to have promote a bookish, learned heir to promote them in one way with a martial younger brother to keep their interests safe in that area too. Gotta respect how emphatic GRRM is to write these characters. If they were third person, they would be cringly unrealistic, but it’s just funny how absurdly wrong the anxiety from our inner voice can be. E.g. Sam thinking he’s craven. The reason is because everything he does, he measures it against his Fathers unrealistic standards. I can relate to this, but in relation to comparing yourself against your older siblings achievements. It can be extremely immobilising and depressing. Even when everyone thinks yours a great person, you still view yourself as a loser, by the standards of your older sibling/parent. Never measure yourself by the stick of others.

@willowdove67034 жыл бұрын
Henbot It makes sense for him to be upset. However frought their relationship, at the end of the day his father was murdered. That’s a rough thing to process. And his brother died too- I don’t think their relationship was bad outside of the forced comparisons between them. His family died horribly. They were burned alive. That’s upsetting. Now, would I have liked for there to be more conflict in his portrayed feelings? Yes. I think part of him would be glad or even vindictive that his father was dead and couldn’t abuse him anymore. Which in turn he’d probably feel guilty about, since again, being burned alive is horrible and they were his family. So they could have done more with that story beat, but ultimately I didn’t find it unbelievable
@Henbot4 жыл бұрын
@@willowdove6703 Saw no issue with him mourning his brother but it was too much for me with his dad plus how they framed the whole thing. She executed them it wasn't just murder. Just because someone your dad doesn't mean you have to mourn them if they pass and were horrendous to you. It also didn't feel like it matched what little growth they did with Sam either, he would have moved on from his dad, already sort of was, especially with him robbing the heirloom. Really the fact is it was no different from any other Lord in the show who executed people that disobey and how they went on about it evidence she tyrannical. "Just because someone's your dad doesn't mean you have to mourn them" - Sure, and just because your dad's an abusive asshole doesn't mean you CAN'T mourn them. Sam had a (tragic & probably hopeless) dream of eventually earning his father's respect, and his death made that impossible. Grief - especially over a parent - is complex, traumatic, and incredibly personal. There's no right, wrong, or "inaccurate" way for it to manifest. Having said that, Sam is an incredibly sensitive and empathic character, and seeing him do a triumphant fist-pump over the gruesome death of his father and little brother would have been weird and implausible even in the paper-thin "emotions other than vengeance and lust are for babies" universe of the show.

Keep up the great work LmL , I fell behind for a few episodes in the series on both channels with the insanity going on at the moment but all caught up again , this type of content is certainly a great way to escape all the craziness going on. Sam and everything about to go down in Oldtown is certainly an interesting arc for TWoW, one among many being highlighted in this series. Definitely seems Sam is on a reconnaissance / intelligence gathering mission and with the imminent threat of Euron and of course the Others and all the goings on in the North there will not be much time to stick around. Likely will be some confluence of important information and possibly the odd magical talisman / artifact Sam has to take on the way out of there. I do think it will be some inner conflict with Sam finally where he always wanted to be , at the Citadel , but i think similar to the show (won't be saying that very often) he will realize the flaws of the institution , the monopolization of knowledge , not accepting of new ideas and warnings to the point of outright disbelief / resistance and other than their own self interest & self preservation not proactive in terms of taking action ; which along with the threat of Euron and the need to get back to Jon will be the impetus for Sam to get out of there , take some treasures (knowledge and likely some physical items) and his realizations about the Citadel not feel all that bad about it. Given Sam's life experiences at this point he is not going to dither about and fall in line the way he likely would have if he was sent to Oldtown as a boy instead of The Wall. Not sure if Randyll will be a Horn Hill by the time Sam likely arrives there given how far away Randyll is off in combat but would be a nice dynamic change for Sam to come in with valuable info , driven in his plans with conviction and be the one who helps out his family and father who cast him out , might be ironic if somehow Randyll's demise is on account of not listening to Sam. I do think the horn he has is the Horn of Winter , he seems to keep hanging onto it and we know the horn will likely play a role in the endgame , the graphic of TWoW is a horn (which looks like the HoW) and though we will likely see the imminent blowing of the dragon-binder horn , i think one of the last acts of this book may be the blowing of the Horn of Winter as well. Though i do agree i think some knowledge of what the horn is and does and maybe even a physical piece that Sam could acquire in the Citadel will likely facilitate its repair and being blown ; the repair process might even be a two-fold thing as it may be magically and physically broken.

Do you think Jon would be seeping blood into the ground now if Sam was there to help him? Do you think Sam is safe without Jon to protect him in Old Town? One running theme in ASOIAF is the lone wolf dies but the pack survives. Sam and Jon are sworn brothers and they need to stick together. I love Sam but he is ripe for the picking in Old Town. I've got no interest in Sam "earning his dad's respect," because Randyll's respect is worth jack shit... but I *do* like the idea of a fleeing Sam organising the defence of Horn Hill if he were to arrive there and find his father is away on campaign. Dickon isn't a completely lost cause so it could be nice to see Sam earn *his* respect, but it would also be very in character for Sam to merely put in the work with no expectation of anyone giving him credit for it. Maybe Dickon just comes back from war to hear the story of how his "useless, craven" big brother appeared out of nowhere, saved the day, and rode off again.

Once Euron attacks, Marvin's students could steal the restricted books, and Horn Hill looks as far away from the coast and Euron as it can be, and seems a good hiding place to flee to with a cartload of books, at least first. (Though I would not pick the keep but some cave near by to hide). Not to forget, that if the map is correct, Horn Hill guards a Red Mountain's-pass to a river that ends at Starfall. While Euron besieges and breaks Oldtown to get what he wants, and perhaps is held up by some minor troubles in the Redwyne Straits, Samwell and his group could run up to Horn Hill (though I'd go by Uplands, since it looks shorter) and from there can take a boat down in perhaps a two day journey to Starfall (excluded waterfalls). In the show Samwell steals a sword. But Lord Tarly still has his own and the only really interesting ownerless sword of the book is kept at Starfall. And his entry to Starfall would be Alleras. - Not to forget in High Hermitage they could run into whatever happened to (probably fake) Myrcella and into Obara and Darkstar.

What do you guys think of Preston's idea that Jaqen is in Oldtown for the glass candle, in order to find his true target; Bloodraven? I think it's a really, really interesting theory that makes a ton of sense. Love to hear a discussion on this.

In this whole world, when there is a surfeit of heirs in a house and the person in charge (not necessarily the Lord) delegates power and manages egos, the house is very successful. In the show, Tyrion said something like princes are c+*

I literally could see Sam start grabbing what he can, but get on to himself over and over for not getting the Epic items when in reality he did, they just don't look super epic. Like the Holy Grail being a simple cup. Sam is upset about getting a blade that looks like a letter opener but it's the sword of heroes or something.

As far as any future book scenes we might get of Sam rolling up to Horn Hill with military intel and talking business with Randyll goes, YES that would go a long way to catching Randyll unawares and surprise-gaining Sam his respect. We won't get that dinner scene a la HBO as you said, but I think even in the urgency to prep incase ironmen come inland, I can't help but think a machismo guy like Randyll wouldn't also grudgingly respect Sam in a toxic-masc "boys will be boys and men have needs" way vis-a-vis his obvious companionship with Gilly. Vow of celibacy breaking won't matter to him as much in the book i don't think. No idea who Randyll will react to baby Monster or even believe he isn't Sam's/therefore hasn't besmirched any Tarly anything. And anyhow, it really shouldn't even cross Randyll's mind either way. Unless later, Sam's younger brother (very much NOT named Dickon in the book) is killed/maimed in battle. That might cause an inheritance issue or maybe even a Tarly-line-ending issue.

Sam is a true man. He risked his life to help a woman in distress, then took it upon himself to take care of this woman and to be a father to her child. There's nothing more manly than that.

@@DavidLightbringer Jaqen has his own game to play but not necessarily the Faceless Men's. There is a possibility that faux Pate is not there to kill anyone. That Old Town is just a means to an end. Normally a target will not need a bit of an extra information that Faceless Men didn't have. There are two beings that citadel records have allow the kills to occur Dragons and the Others. faux Pate knows that Samwell knows what kills the Others. But who order the hit and the Faceless Men don't come cheap. Not this level of quarry. The Iron Throne doesn't have the funds nor do I see Dany hiring the Faceless amen.

This is why I think PJ is onto something with a lot of his conspiracies. Because people can enter into your mind and give you visions and mess with your dreams. So before I get too far into this video... I gotta say that this isn't the show guys there are consequences for actions. It he steals books especially *forbidden* books all hell would break loose. I think that Sam will spend more time learning and providing information to the wall. Sam is at the center of knowledge in Westeros I highly doubt he'd leave. Honestly why would he need to leave? He can either send information via raven or glass candle.

Well it's under attack by Euron, and the long night is about to fall so... It's not that there won't be consequences, but that everybody might be running for their lives at some point fairly soon.

I don't think Gilly will make it to Horn Hill, she was waiting for Sam on the Cinnamon Wind, and they are probably Marwen's ride to Slavers Bay. That means Marwen gets to Slavers Bay with the books Maester Aemon brought from the wall, Gilly who knows about what's happening North of the Wall, and Mance Raydar's son. Pate may have changed, but I was under the impression that he wasn't that popular, and the other students weren't close friends, so his changes might not be all that noticeable to the others students that aren't that close to him.

Leo tyrell and aleras know everything about the real treat, WW and daenerys because of Sam. Glass candle comparasion with WeirWood. Sam reads something about how to fix the horn of winter and use it, sam's home is called HORNs hill. Tal como Tyrion saved books from libary before being burned, Sam coul save books/things from the citadel before being burned by Euron, all the information on the citadel will be lost and will be super tragic, and Leo Tyrell, being a highborn, knows secret paths to get out from the citadel, and that Sam will scape, and he was planing to bring Gillly to hornhill, but he will not even know if Gilly has survived, if Xhando has survived... and not having ships to return to the wall, he will go to the only place he could go, home, horn hill. HardHome hightower conections. Sam blowing the horn to make a wave against Euron, or Euron blowing the horn a top of the hightower tower to destroy the wall.

What if Sam saying there would be no more need for ravens with the glass candles is a clue? Ravens and weirwoods are connected and together parallel the glass candles. Maybe either the network of ravens tied to Bran and Bloodraven will either go down or need to be subverted, and they'll need the glass candle as a workaround? The dragon glass could also be used to help him escape o Old Town when Eurone starts doing his thing, so it'd be a killing 2 birds with 1 stone sort of thing. I'm only 19 minutes in, so y'all might cover part of this comment, but I'm going to be too lazy and/or high to come back and edit. Also, Sam has always been my favorite, and I've had a bit of a crush on him for 20 or so years. If he doesn't end up growing old sorting the books back at the wall, I'm going to pull this book series over and turn it right around God dammit!

I feel like Pate, being a FACELESS MAN, is waiting to FINISH the ORIGINAL mission... extermination of the Valyrians. Daenerys is the last known; what if Pate is collecting information and waiting for the moment Dany gets to Westeros; infiltrate and murder her. Boom; all the old masters are dead.
