I wish Joan's show was giving a little longer of a chance. it was very good. She was the first female to host a late night show. Lucy is still funny, here.

There was one funny exchange on anther of Lucy's appearances on Joan' show, where she pointed to Joan's (fake) diamond earrings and asked, "Are those real?" And Joan responded, "No matter where you point on me, the answer's going to be no", and Lucy almost fell out of her chair laughing.

Lucy was trying to be funny with that comment, but it seems like she just didn't catch what Michele was saying (it was more of a joke for Joan) because I guarantee you they've never served Kasha varnishkes - with or without brisket - at any White House dinner (if you're not familiar, Kasha varnishkes is an Ashkenazi Jewish specialty: both Joan & Michele are Jewish with roots in Eastern Europe)

I met Miss Ball (Lucy) 30+ years ago, I was very small nut something in her struck my fancy, and we proceeded to have a 20+ year correspondence, at least once a week I would receive a letter from her, and she would receive one from me. Mostly bland stuff about our weeks but I got the occasional semi gossip about one or the other of her kids, or maybe how Gary was being an ass to her, (ass) being her word. I guess the most she got out of me was "my parents suck" etc, but it was enough that we wrote back and forth almost every week until she died in 1989. In fact my last letter was completed by Gary, long after the world knew she had passed, he said something like I know you know by now, and that I didn't try to pick up where she left off. Her politics were ok Democratic, but she had some odd Religious believes. we only discussed those once, and that was a very short phone call.
@tomtaylor9118 жыл бұрын
I did keep the letters, Gary sent me back all the ones I had written to her, I was kind of shocked/flattered that she had saved all of them. My Mom had them for the longest time, now they are in my possession, I keep them in Plastic Bags in a fire safe. Her semi Odd Religious believes, were her own, and I think she would trust me to not say anything else about that subject.

Lucille Ball came from a very poor family and never forgot where she came from. She was hardly a Republican, she did vote for Eisenhower in the 50's but so did everyone else and she knew Reagan from her old Hollywood days but she was definitely more Democrat leaning and even did a TV special guest starring Jimmy Carter in the late 70's. She was very close friends with Ginger Rogers who was a staunch Republican and she was once quoted as saying "I love Ginger but I don't love Ginger's politics" so there you go.....
@krismartinez23346 жыл бұрын
Ginger said Lucy was mean to Mrs Roger's (at Ginger's moms dance school), she didn't seem like they were on friendly terms.
@GrandGame144015 жыл бұрын
Lucy and Nancy Reagan were friends all the way by to the 1940s when she was an actress. Politics don't have to interfere with friendships. Also, Lucy was not Republican nor democrat. As Desi put it once, "She didn't even know who the mayor of Los Angeles was!".

Just to clear some things up. Ronald Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild for 7 terms in the 40's thru 50's, the most complicated in the Guild's history most notably the McCarthy hearings, the end of the studio system, the gaining popularity of TV & the rise of Communism in China, the Soviet Union & Korea. During this time he was a strong & successful advocate for actor's financial & benefit rights. This gained him & Nancy a lot of friends in the industry.

Ugh, Michelle Lee? How do ya go from Lucille Ball to Michelle Lee? Iv'e never seen Lucy moved down the couch on any interview show. I'm shocked. Usually when Lucy was done, SHE LEFT! She would grab her purse, stand up, wave and head out the way she came in, to thunderous applause of course. So I'm almost shocked seeing another person make Lucy move down from the main seat. They could've kept Michelle for another show to talk about the bits of paper she swiped from a white house dinner, good grief. I much more would've enjoyed just Joan & Lucy. God I miss that woman. She's the only celebrity who died that made me cry, like full-on ballin cryin. I'll never forget the day, it was liking losing a family member cause we literally grew up with Lucy.

Well, I actuallyliked Lucy's comments from the side--which wouldn't have been possible if she had just grabbed her purse, clutched her pearls and left. I think it was gracious of her to stay, and made for all the more merriment. I gather Michele (correct spelling) was partly there to honor Nancy Reagan (who had left) and Lucy for their own charitable and socially conscious acts. There are indignities in this world. I wouldn't say moving down the couch is actually one of those.

That was a strange time. Joan was at her peak when this show was axed. Joan's husband took his own life. Joan's career temporarily fell apart and her life fell apart. Fox made a big mistake. The Late Show did not survive the loss of Joan Rivers. Fox lost money. Joan's audience was building. Her ratings, at that time, were healthy. Fox never lost money with Joan. The situation between Edgar and Barry Diller must have been ugly for Fox to go to that extreme.
