As an ex-trumpet player you get my enthusiastic thumbs up. I'm too old to blow anymore, so I appreciate the musicianship involved. Most folk think you need strong lungs to play brass instruments, but it really takes strong lips to be able to modulate the air being blown through the horn. My exercise to strengthen mine was using just the mouth piece at every opportunity to practice making the squeakiest tone I could muster, leaving my lips quite swollen and tender, and I still couldn't achieve the vaunted high E.

I live in NYC, in walking distance of that station. I haven't seen these guys before, but the MTA has an arts program that encourages this sort of thing, and musicians can apply for permits and busk in various stations. Some of them are extraordinary, and must seem to make out pretty well in tips and CD sales.
