The Lucky Peak Power Plant Project is a hydro power plant operated by the Boise-Kuna Irrigation District in Idaho. At peak generation, the powerhouse on Lucky Peak Dam produces 101 megawatts of electricity - enough power for about 100,000 homes. Lucky Peak chose Phoenix Contact to guide them in their digitalization journey due to their years of expertise, knowledge, and support.

Transcript: - So, working with Phoenix Contact is probably one of the best parts of my job. My name is Derek Stone. I'm a system integration specialist at Lucky Peak Power Plant. There's always things that are going to come up in your digital transformation that you're just not sure, am I going about this right, is there an easier way to do it? There's always these what ifs, and so being able to reach out to someone who has the expertise in the field, that have worked with other people in the same kind of scenarios, it's great to have them on your side to help guide you through some of these things you're trying to make crucial decisions on.
My name is Tyson Dye. I am the generation supervisor at Lucky Peak Power Plant in Boise, Idaho. So as we've developed this digitization process, we're starting to bring information closer to the forefront of our operators. We're trying to bring it to their fingertips where they can use the information, they can manipulate it, and then they can respond correctly to any emergency situation or any operational concerns that we may have, and this helps us to improve our efficiencies, and, effectively, it improves our output.
Yeah, so the process of getting into the digitalization really sparked from an event that we had at the plant where we had some legacy equipment not operate correctly. Phoenix Contact was brought in, and I've always found their products to be very well made, very sturdy, very durable, and very reliable, and knowing what I was getting into with the digitalization process, that's exactly what I wanted to build the foundation off of. So some of the solutions that Phoenix Contact brought to us at the early stages of our integration was we were trying to create a network ring in our facility, and having old legacy equipment, it made it very difficult to find places that we could put switches and fiber boxes and stuff like that. And we searched around and searched around, and really, Phoenix had the perfect solution for us for both bringing something in that was compact enough, but also that was going to handle all the other needs that we needed to through our digitalization process.
Having a solid resource through sales and the marketing groups there, whenever we have a question or concern, they've always been able to provide an answer, they've been able to provide a resource for us, and we wear lots of different hats here inside the power plant. We're not perfect experts at everything, and so it's nice to have experts out there in the field that do have the knowledge and the experience that we can rely on and lean on when we need that help.
Moving through the process of digitalization, there's a lot of parts that go in that are involved with it. Not just PLCs and I/O, but there's SCADA software. There's what do you put in your software and what kind of servers or what platform are you putting this stuff on? And even though the SCADA system that we're running is in Phoenix Contact, it was recommended by Phoenix Contact, which is one of the reasons we have such a good working relationship, is that they're willing to offer or suggest great solutions for stuff that isn't necessarily theirs. They're just a great resource, and it's really hard to beat these days.--
