I had a guy come at my car with a bat while i was sitting in the driver seat...he walked up,tapped on my window with his bat,i rolled the window down about 3" he tried to put his face up to the window to look in my car and i unloaded pepper spray right in his eyes at point blank range...I never seen anyone retreat so quickly. I drove off and went about my day...a nonlethal ending to a bad situation and a learning experience for Mr. Agressive Bat Boy!

Webbit2019 Wow, amazing you didn’t have to pullover and stagger out of your vehicle for a few minutes. I accidentally triggered some spray on a customers set of car keys in my office once and it cleared out the entire area for several minutes. I can only imagine what it would be like while enclosed in a vehicle. Good for you though.

Once you think about the legal consequences of using a firearm against an assailant who's unarmed, then having to convince a judge or jury that you honestly felt your life was in danger, pepper spray makes a lot of sense as a non-lethal option. My sabre 3-in-one keychain spray deployed yesterday while loading up some furniture. Pain. And. Suffering. I had coverage from my mid-abdominals all the way down to mid-thigh. Barely missed my groin (Whew!). I can't imagine what it would be like to take a direct hit to the face with this stuff. It took a LONG time for the burning to subside. It seemed to intensify for about 10-15 minutes before it stopped feeling like someone was poking me with needles. And a friggin huge chemical burn. I am definitely NOT carrying the turn and press safety type on my person anymore. Also, this experience gave me much more confidence in the stopping power this stuff has. Pretty much ruined my day. So, good job, Sabre! Keep peddling your pain and suffering. I'll keep recommending it.

I agree with almost everything you have said; your assessment of OC/CS formulas is an exception. OC and CS have two different methods of action and affect the body differently. This is why when I was a working police officer, I found OC/CS mixtures were more effective on more intoxicated and psychotic people than OC alone. To say that CS merely dilutes OC is inaccurate.

@timseguin6292 At least with Sabre their OC/CS formula reduces the MC content to 0.33% (while adding 1.5% CS). I never had much luck with this one, probably mostly because of the 'diluted' MC content. I think that the single-ingredient Sabre Red 1.33% formula is much more effective and acts quicker than this particular OC/CS mixture.

The Sabre is good if you get a clear shot (I have 17 sprays of violent offenders), won't stop them, but will slow them down. As a LEO with different departments I’ve been sprayed and had accidental, incidental, and contact with OC and CS on numerous occasions. OC works well and in my state, NY, is equal to physical force. I prefer OC to hands on and short of a taser it is the best less than lethal option. I like Asp Palm series sprays; I carry the defender which is similar in size to a mini mag light. Asp has inert canisters for training and OC canisters as you reload the device just like putting batteries in a flashlight. Also makes 3 different sizes of their palm series and all can easily go on a key ring of in a pocket. I’ve also carried a few brands and used stream, fogger, cone, and foam. I preferred foam due to its effectiveness at distance as well as the very reduced blow back in wind. As a note foam doesn’t do much against dogs; in my experience stream and fogger stops dogs in their tracks. Regardless of what you carry you should practice with it. And take a lesson from law enforcement once you use it toss it because once used they can leak and not work the next time, when you may need it. Start in the chest and work up to the forehead then go back down. Be careful with stream sprays and needle effect; this is where the spray acts like a needle and can, at close ranges, actually damage an eye.

I'm former LEO, so I have some experience with OC... I switched brands to one that the deputies were using, after I soaked a guys face, and he still evaded several officers, and a K-9 tracker... My recommendation, and go-to is FOX... It's 2% OC... Stronger then the standard LEO issue, but legal for anyone to purchase if your state allows it... I carry the Fox Five Point Three in stream... They have varied sizes... I carry the 1.5 oz in a snap case that has a belt clip... Stick it on your belt, shorts, or whatever pants you're wearing... You'll find, as I did, that bad guys get use to the traditional OC used by LEO's and jails, and it has little to no effect on them...
@JSSmith-to9pd
@JSSmith-to9pd 23 күн бұрын
The 2% in Fox is the percentage of OC, not the MC content. The lower the percentage of OC, the quicker the recovery time. The higher the MC content, though, is what causes the effects. So, quicker decon/recovery with Fox, but still super effective with its MC content of 1.4%.

@@lockergr tear gas hurts worse but as soon as you're in fresh air the effects are over in minutes. OC lasts for hours. That said, bear spray would be your best option. Pro Tips - Check your state laws as some states limit the maximum size allowed. California, for example, limits canister size to 2.5 oz max. Ladies, don't just toss the can anywhere in your purse. You'll never be able to find it in time. If you're going to purse carry it, figure out a way...like a holster or similar...where you can store it in a solid location, where it won't come loose, so you know exactly where it's at A black canister may be very difficult to locate in a purse...especially in the dark. Pink or something bright might be a better choice.

@michaelbeckerman7532
@michaelbeckerman7532 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. In most real-world scenarios you are likely going to be spraying this within about 3-6 feet from the person you are intending to use it on. That's the distance your attacker will likely be at when you are convinced that the attack is on and it's unquestionably time to use the spray. It's always best to carry it in your hand at the ready so you can deploy it as fast as possible and as effectively as possible. Always focus on eyes, nose and mouth and never apply any more than what is necessary to buy yourself the needed time to make a safe withdrawal/escape. Using too much of it can actually kill someone. Something to keep in mind.

It’s too often I see anyone that could be in danger due to who they are forego having any defense simply because they are for gun control. For OC I was able to continue fighting and keep my eyes partially open for about a minute before my eyes shut and I had to wash it out of my eyes. Took me about an hour to feel normal and it reactivated later that night when I took a shower. Taser was immediately effective, once I got hit with it I was on the ground and in extreme pain for 5 seconds. Once those 5 seconds were over I felt physically exhausted but overall normal. Within about 5 minutes the exhaustion was gone. So basically OC spray isn’t immediately effective and taser is, however I would (hesitantly) get hit with the taser again, I would not want to get hit with the OC spray ever again.

I remember being sprayed for the first time during my academy. It was surprisingly manageable and had very little effect on me. I remember thinking that it tasted like Vietnamese food lol. I eat a lot of spicy foods and really think that's what made the difference. I used it a few times on people and it was always effective, but you are right, there's always a few seconds where the person being sprayed is likely to still be able to fight.

@@lockergr A combo is probably not necessary. I have used a combo fogger before but it was on a large group. I have also sprayed one of the little Mace brand OC/Tear gas combo sprays; it has a pretty wide spray pattern so it makes it a little easier to hit someone with the spray, but it also makes it more susceptible to being blown around if there's any wind. The OC only cans such as Sabre shoot a nice stream, almost like a can of silly string.

I've used a spray in heavy winds and I probably got just as much OC in my face as my target. Even being equally affected the shock of resistance ended the situation instantly. Not a pleasent experience but it worked. Also: if you get OC on your hands you can't wash them enough, trust me, wash them a LOT... and wear gloves when you visit the mens' room. Don't get OC where OC is not meant to go, its a bad time.

Great content as usual. I'd like to offer some constructive criticism. If the manufacturer says to do bursts, you shouldn't test it with a continuous spray. Continuous rapid release of the contents drops the temp (and pressure) with diminishing returns if not done in short bursts. It's similar to one of those keyboard air dusters. The performance is awful when held continuously, but short bursts are the ticket to get that extra little bit of velocity out of them.

Every can should have an asymmetric shape, so that you can grab it and operate it without looking. I found that on certain cans, i would have to take a look to make sure where the front and back is. This is apparently overlooked quiet frequently. The mark 6 looks fine to me in that regard. Also critically important is a latch below the nozzle, if you accidently cover it up the spray is pretty much useless. The design needs to be absolutely stress proof.

The kimber Guardian angel must not be used under a *2 feet range* : this can damage the eyes, the projected liquid travels so fast (muzzle speed is about 90 mph) that it can penetrate into the ocular globes, causing injuries to the cornea. This is caused by a hydraulic needle effect, it's the principle of jet injector used for vaccination. This distance is 5 feet for the JPX jet protector. Under this distance one have to aim for the upper chest : the hitting liquid (with 270 mph muzzle speed) splatters in small droplets up to the face and is intended to have its effect on the perp. The same could happen with a too powerful pepper spray used 1 inch from the eyes. but obviously, you don't always choose the distance ! greeting from France.

I can HIGHLY recommend the Def Tech (Safariland) spray at 14:10. I used it in a jail and prison setting. I've seen it used hundreds of times, and used it myself dozens of times. The 1.3% formula he is holding is the strongest formula and I believe it is actually TOO strong as it just annilates people, and destroys the area too (inside). We typically used the weakest 0.2% formula and it works 99% of the time. The much stronger 1.3% formula made my instantly vomit the second I walked into a cell to extract an inmate. The stuff is unbearably strong... I carry the same exact Mark 6 container of Def Tech spray but in 0.7% strength, which is PLENTY strong, in my observation. Out of all the sprays he reviewed, I am of the opinion that the Def Tec 1.3% is the best of the best for daily carry. Strong stuff, and an excellent delivery method and safety system as well.

“Kimber is one of the only pepper sprays that can injure someone”. Actually almost every stream canister of OC spray can permanently damage someone’s eyes through the hydraulic needle effect. Different manufacturers quote different distances, but for my training the canister must be at least 18 inches away from the person’s eyes when being sprayed. Within those 18 inches the spray can cause the eye to be punctured from the stream pressure. The closer you get, the more likely this effect is to take place.

One thing I don't like about it: I would like for the clip to be more secure. On your comment about not keeping the spray after expiration.... Well I kept my 9 ounce Frontiersman well after it's 10/2015 expiration. I finally decided to replace it, so I discharged it today (8/2024). I got 4 x 1.5 second bursts. The first burst was at 35 feet and the paper target showed no signs of droplets reaching it, although the cloud of fine mist surely did. So I moved in to 25 feet and the next burst definitely put some wet marks on the paper target. Then I moved in to 15 feet and the 3rd burst just dreched the target, completely coating it in orange liquid, which is pretty wild for what is clearly a spray and not a liquid stream. The 4th and final burst again completely drenched teh target at 15 feet. Looks like I will be keeping my next can until at least 2035!

On the advice of the trainer at my local range, I bought the midsize asp baton for myself (and the palm size for several other people). I carried it for a while, and never technically used it. I say technically because it did leak (trace amounts) after a while, causing an odd burning sensation on my leg near the pocket I kept it in. I didn't figure it out fast enough sadly, because after rubbing my leg, wondering what was going on, I then rubbed my eye. I immediately knew just what had happened, and regretted it for a good long while afterwards. I think the plastic safety latch is a bit too fragile for its purpose, really should be metal, but I don't know if that was the actual problem or not. Switched to a saber red with the rotating safety criticized in this video, and can confirm the safety will rotate to fire on its own, so I check it and reset it frequently. Probably been carrying it about a year give or take, (every day all day) no accidents so far. One other point to criticize - when you draw it it's hard to know the orientation without looking (ie is the spicy end pointed at bad guy, where is the safety). The asp baton is much quicker and easier to aim under duress and to disengage the safety. I did have to threaten someone with the saber to avoid a violent encounter several months back, and it was disturbing how long it took me to get it into action once I decided it needed to come out. I think I'll need to replace it with a thumb cap model at some point.

I remember one guy in Basic who went to relieve himself after going through the CS chamber. He came screaming out of the woods, sprinted to the water buffalo, opened the release valve and shoved it in his pants. Wash your hands, folks.

Definitely need a degreasing or emulsifying agent first. Had a buddy in high school do the same thing after using Tiger Balm.

Great video and thank you for the video, gives a great overview of different products. Especially coming from an ammo company you have my deepest respect. Some constructive criticism: 1) If someone is allergic to OC even that can be lethal, so I would call all products LESS lethal. 2) My less lethal EDC is the Kimber Pepper Blaster. It is flat, fits into Jeans pockets, has the longest range for its size, works in RAIN, against WIND and INSIDE, not coming back. Opposite to spray that works OK on short distances, but not in rain or against wind, worse: inside ALL are affected, don't need that! Sure the Pepper Blaster requires some marksmanship, but if I didn't have that, should I just roll over? If you also carry and train with a gun, aiming should be no issue and the Kimber Pepper Blaster is the closest thing to a less-lethal GUN. It's like a OC-Derringer, hitting a shotgun-like 2 foot splash on the target. If that doesn't work maybe the Glock will.

I've been carrying pepper spray ever since I became a MAILMAN. Yes, the stereotype is true. 🐩🧯🐾🐾🐾 I've probably sprayed about twenty dogs so far, and, thankfully, no people...yet. I've been sprayed once with Freeze +P while in armed security guard class.

@@toynazi my issue with dog treats is that those dogs are being trained to run up to EVERY mail carrier, and EVERY mail carrier is afraid of an unknown approaching dog. Some carriers are simply terrified of dogs in general.

Oh god. I recognize that bear spray can. Me and a friend went into an abandoned raided house and found a discarded can and sprayed a bit of it away from us inside the house. We spent the next 20 minutes coughing our lungs out and yelling in pain OUTSIDE the damn house after only having the cloud near us. That bear mace is NO freaking joke. Thanks for the very informative video! I've been thinking for a while about getting a self defense item for myself and I will probably pick one of these up on your recommendation.

So in addition I recently had an incident and had a friend buy me a can of bear mace for "personal protection" and you should be careful because it says directly on the can it can cause permanent damage to the eyes and is not to be used on humans.

Totally agree with you on both carrying an OC and it being more useful than a firearm. Bar is much lower for using an OC.
