I understood some of it due to my two tours in South Korea. I was what we called a "village rat" as opposed to being a "barracks rat." A "village rat" is the GI who goes into the village/town and gets to know the people, customs, learn some if not a lot of the language, etc. The last time I was there was 1980 and I still get a craving for kimchi.

@@shiruwa4617 When I lived there as an English teacher, I got obsessed with the film Oldboy. This guy, Choi Min Sik was well recognized as one of the greatest actors that S. Korea has ever produced. He's immensely respected. And rightly so! He's fantastic! I ended up renting every single film that he was ever in. He's genuinely one of the best actors in the world...and he tends to choose very interesting projects. I Saw the Devil is really good and so is, Sympathy for Ms. Vengeance, but I'm still to this day in awe of his acting prowess from Oldboy. That film was magnificent!!
