There's an old TV "rule" if you will. When the "will they, won't they" characters finally ackowledge each other, the show is over. This has carried on for years, even other anime have this. It's very sad to see that earth Natsu doesn't develop at all as a character. How the author presented him at the very beginning: a lover of fighting, eating, sleeping - that’s how he remained. The only type of interpersonal relationship that Natsu enters into is friendship. He believes that human children hatch from eggs (and I don't think that was a joke on his part). It is likely that the author intended to leave it like this for the rest of his life.
