About Fellow Travelers:
Created by Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, Homeland), based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, FELLOW TRAVELERS is an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Matt Bomer plays handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements - until he meets Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.
Over the course of four decades, we follow our five main characters -- Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams), and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) - as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.
Nyswaner and Bomer executive produce with Robbie Rogers (All American, My Policeman). Daniel Minahan (Halston, American Crime Story: Versace) executive produces and directs the first two episodes. Co-produced by Fremantle with SHOWTIME, FELLOW TRAVELERS was produced in Toronto.

In Man In An Orange Shirt, Flora Berryman found Letters that Thomas March (An Artist) wrote to her Husband Michael (A Banker). It was the late 1940's early 1950's and she burned them. If those letters were discovered Michael would have gone to Prison. In those days being Gay was a crime.

If she got divorced, it would be a major scandal and disgrace and her friends would drop her like a hot potato. Claudette Robinson (Smokey's Ex Wife) put up with his infidelities. He had an affair with Diana Ross before The Supremes hit the big time. From 1967-1984 he had an affair with a woman named Kandi who once worekd as A Bunny at Hugh Hefner's Club and she went through a period in her life where she wouldn't date other men. In her sick warped mind she felt that she was cheating on him. He even had an affair with a 21 Year Old Dancer from Soul Train named Meta in 1973. Kandi got pregnant for Smokey in 1984 and Claudette took him to the cleaners. At last report she still gets half of his estate.

Had a conversation with someone on another channel here and made me rethink my understanding of this scene. I don't agree with everything they said (notably the chronology of how things happened) but this is such a brilliant take. "Skippy was a passionate person. Loving, sensitive and caring. That letter was more for his well-being than Hawk's. Skippy knew that when he wrote it. He slid it under Hawk's apartment door .... He was heading towards a new chapter in his life. Moving on... Skippy needed to write the letter to get Hawk out of his head. It must have felt cathartic for him to put his words on paper letting Hawk know how he was moving on. Telling Hawk in person was not an option. So writing a letter and hand-delivering it to his door was how he dealt with it. A letter like that could not be put in the mail for anyone to possibly see. Ironically, while packing up Hawk's apartment Lucy intercepted the letter and read it. It's worth noting here how she then burns the letter. She could have simply ripped it up or tossed it in the trash. But, that wasn't good enough. She had to see the letter burn in an attempt to make those words go away. Snub them out. For me, I couldn't help but appreciate the look on Skippy's face the moment Lucy told him that she had found that letter. "Read it...and then burned it". That look was priceless. It became abundantly clear to Skippy that Hawk had been played. Even Hawk, the man Skippy always saw as bulletproof was not immune to deception. And why, you might ask did Lucy feel the need to tell Skippy. She was wounded. Even after all those years, Hawk still has this man in his life. Proof that she'd never snub out those words, ever. So, she did what so many wounded people do. She wounded Skippy. As he walked away leaving her home, she "took that dagger and stabbed him in the back" metaphorically speaking. Hurt people hurt people."

These are the only two people Hawk actually had a relationship with. Kenny was his youth and very short term. His relationship with Lucy was comfortable with his complete personal freedom. His relationship with Tim was Passion and a bond Hawk didn’t realize until Tim was dead….Love.

The look of pain on Tim’s face was flooring. At the same time, Lucy is trying to hang in to her marriage knowing that Hawk isn’t who she thought he was. And it’s just sad all the way around because if that time hadn’t been so oppressive they each could have been happy in finding love. Man, I am not ready for these final 2 episodes.

Lucy was just protect herself, she was just getting married to someone that she realized don't know him at all... Also she didn't know Skippy. I think after they meet eachother in this scene, she realized he is not a monster, and she find both of them in same pain... I believe she felt close to what Tim is going through. Thats why she talked about the letter.

A lot of people like to say she was being cruel here but in my opinion this was her way of trying to sympathize with him since she truly understand that they both loved her husband and neither one could have him even though Hawk loved Tim, I actually felt sorry for her in the story since you seem how she went from being this happy compassionate person to being cold once she married him, Hawk broke her.

So the show jumps back and forth between the present and the past, which can make some scenes a little confusing to place on the timeline. Ep 6 takes place in 1968 and it's the first time Tim and Hawk see each other in 14 years!!! ( 😩since 1954 when Hawk told Tim his plan to marry Lucy and Tim left for the army.) In this scene Lucy already knew about Hawks gay affairs and who Tim was, because she found the letter, read it and burnt it years earlier. The letter scene also happens years after 1954 when Tim left for the army. (they don't say how many yrs after) Tim returns and reaches out to Hawk with that letter. He confesses he is still in love with him but since Lucy burnt it Hawk never knew. I think Lucy told him she burnt it not out of malice but maybe she felt sorry for him, and this gave Tim the answer as to why Hawk never got back to him. Lucy is also a victim. Hawk is a coward who kept cheating on Lucy and never gave up his straight life fantasy for Tim!

Thanks for confirming to me my thoughts about the chronology in terms of when the letter was written. Every day I grow more convinced of it. I wish one of the people involved would take the time to clarify this already. The disagreement on this point has degenerated into useless bickering at this point. (OMG wait, unrelated to the letter but now I'm confused about 1954 and the seeing each other after 14 years bit give episode 8. Ugh, I need to think some more.) I liked the rest of your comment too. I wondered about Hawk's reply though. Tim's saying he's leaving but he wrote the letter as a way of saying goodbye, it seems to me and there is no address that is visible anywhere. Why do you think that Tim may have been waiting for a letter than never came?
@t0ny260
@t0ny260 9 ай бұрын
@@i.t.t. indeed ep 8 reveals Hawk and Tim rekindled their romance in 1957 (3yrs after Tim joined the army) so it had not been 14 yrs but 11yrs in 1968 (ep 6). The scene when Lucy burns the letter is sometime between 1955-1957 after Tim returns from the army (we don't know how long Tim served for) . This would be the first time Tim tries to reach Hawk since they split in 1954 so he doesn't know if Hawk still loves him or even wants to keep in touch. But in ep 8 (1957 flashback) Tim sends Hawk that telegram and he responds (this is Tim's second attempt and it worked). Again in 1968 Hawk finds a way to reach Tim after reading in the newspaper he is wanted for his war protest. So we know Hawk always finds a way to reach Tim, so Tim wasn't necessarily waiting for a letter but rather any sign from Hawk. Lucy burning the letter didn't change anything bc Hawk and Tim always seemed to find a way to reconnect.

Skippy may be a man of God, but whether in prayer or confession he never asks for forgiveness for violating their marriage. Regardless of what he thinks of Hawk and Lucy's marriage, they are married. Lucy never crossed his mind when he dropped that letter off. He didn't care.

its hard to not hate everyone in this show but u also have to know its the 1950s - 1980s. She is just a normal person getting caught up in an affair that could literally ruin her life if people found out her husband was actually gay. And for Hawk his whole life revolved around him NOT being gay. U can understand why he did the things he did (although they were wrong) but it isnt really like there was a right thing. If he stayed with tim he wouldve got caught and fired from his job with nothing left, and hed be cast away by every single person he knows. ye he would have tim but people live for themselves first. On the other hand, if he left tim, who u can tell he really loves, for lucy which is what he did in the show, u can see how many issues it has caused for both of them. He leaves occasionally to fulfil his desires and she just has to deal with it cause what can she really do about it. And for Lucy, she just wanted a family and a husband. You can tell she didn't burn the paper cause she hated tim but rather, she didn't want hawk to be reminded of him. They are all living in such a hard time
