My father was a very humble man in the early 60s he bought the first ball and helped to start the first Croatian football team in Sydney. He stayed very low key and followed Sydney croatia all his . I was honoured to watch the 2018 world cup final with him and follow the country he escaped from in the 50s ( Yugoslavia then ) as a 17 year old . He died in 2019 . There is as much Croats around the world as is in Croatia, if not more. We are one of the biggest immigrant countries in the world and just by sheer percentage of Croatians living outside of Croatia we can easily compare Croatia to Ireland and Italy in that respect.

What they did was amazing. A country of 4 million, a war-torn country and only their fifth tournament. If they can do it, surely Australia can too in the future (what I mean is that both countries have similar resources, Australia actually have more but football isn't as big a sport so maybe evens out).

Croatia was war-torned in 1995 not in 2018 or 2020 lmfao. Yes some of these players expirienced war but only few of them the oldest ones such as Modric and Lovren but that is not definition of war-torn country that is maybe trauma on individual level lmfao. Syria is war-torn country at the moment haha

I love Lucy and what a great job she did covering the World Cup. She's a class act, who does her homework and treats every nation with respect. Those idiots who criticised her for pronouncing the players as they should be in their native tongue are bloody morons. Good on Craig for standing up for her and showed what a decent bloke he is, as well as a bloody good football analysist. They should be given a regular show covering all world football or the PL when it starts. The best thing Optus did for the World Cup was stuffing up the coverage to get these two stars to cover the games.

I'm French but Love Modric and remember fondly Zucker, missed the Diamond on their jerseys. But what a match 6 goals and Croatia kept attacking. I'm so glad France won for the second time. Personally I did not see any looser only those who whinge! I feel so glad Optus let SBS take over. But Craig, you do love the sound of your voice don't you? you gave us a lot of good stuff but I wished you'd stuck to it. At times I felt sorry for Lucy and even more for the extra guests. Then came the end, and you had to fish for compliments and turned it into a personal emotional affair as if the WC was about you'z' in the studio. For me it made a great coverage become cheap emotional day of our lives. I think you should have a good look at these 3 books you had on that table.

The world cup watching was marred by SBS choosing beauty over maturity; Mariana Rudan was elegant - no they chose Lucy who is getting irritating by the minute. Les Murray wanted to call people right but why did not anyone call him Laszlo - his proper name then? Craig Foster said foreign names not exactly with rolling rs and soft ts but he said them right so why do we have to listen to what Lucy thinks she should do and not the audience? Sure if I were to call a Spanish person I would call him or her how they are to be called but the SBS TV is NOT addressing each and every country - why not start then Rossiya, Muskva, Polska, Hrvatska, Espana etc! Where will it end? Plus which Australian calls it FUBBOL instead of Football? Then the 101 dress change and hair style- man I tell you was it tuning into soccer or fashion show! No wonder SBS is losing govt funds....
@killercd76826 жыл бұрын
I agree. Essentially it is disrespect for the English language. In English St Peterburg is pronounced 'saint peters-burg' NOT 'saint peters-borg'. Likewise we say 'Japan", we don't say Nihon. This insistence not on pronouncing player names correctly but in using the accent of their home country as well (rolling rs as you put it) is a political statement. It is saying we are nothing but a multi-culture, we don't have a core Western culture at the heart of our society (or shouldn't). Therefore we have to distort our speech even to talk about football.
