The movie talked about is sadly the "new" hollywood trend of rewriting history then calling those who say "Uh actually" as bad guys. IMO history needs to be told honestly regardless if it's good or bad else the lessons of the past are forgotten and repeat themselves.

The movie doesn't rewrite history in any way. It is about a fictional character. I didn't see people crying about 300, which is lot more historically inaccurate. Also, even the movie addresses that Dahomeys and other African countries doing slavery. The movie literally starts with Oyo, another African empire capturing slaves. Also, the main villains in the movie are Portuguese not British. But how dare they do any movie with black people as main character. Only white people get to rewrite history

The movie is not, strictly speaking, totally inaccurate; Yeah absolutely Dahomey engaged in slave raids. And as depicted in the film, they were effectively a tributary kingdom to Oyo early in geze's reign. However there was a time where King Geze decided to stop doing that and try to build his own kingdom through agriculture (mostly sugarcane production and rum distillery.) However this made them the target of raids from Oyo and Mossi, which resulted in Dahomey retaliation, resulting in captives, which resulted in more slaves again, and so people were back on the market. And of course the only reason for this trade was because of demand, created by Portugal and England in the New World; the British wouldn't be like "no, slavery bad, stop it!" until the middle of the 1800's (conveniently after who knows how many people dry in the Caribbean plantations, generating all that wealth that funny enough happened to stay in the hands of England. Hmm. Oh well)

and Spain, GB, France, Spain, Dutch, all at it in west Africa
@chrismdb5686 Жыл бұрын
The slave trade engulfed Africa long before any (Western) European influence appeared in the sub-Sahara. Yes, Western European colonialism (specifically Spanish and English) absolutely drove up demand, but it existed before and after those colonial empires rose and fell. People nowadays like to pretend that America and England are these awful oppressive nations that need to repent and pay reparations for the wrongs committed in the trans-atlantic slave trade, all while ignoring the history of both it, and the rest of the world. Facts are the world used to be a lot worse than it currently is, now it's not. Let's work to a better tomorrow together rather than dividing ourselves over history that's now over 200 years old (1807 as mentioned by the above post).
@TheRusty Жыл бұрын
@@jhart976 And I'm looking at the perpetuation of slavery in British colonies until the Manumission Act of 1833. I mean look, you can ban the import of foreign slaves, but if you're still allowing slavery, you're certainly not going "Oh slavery is bad I guess" right?

I've played mostly in Africa lately (Songhai/Kongo/Kilwa/Butua/Adal) and it's easy to become suuuuper rich with all the gold and ability to create crazy rich trade end nodes. When you colonize and control the Cape then Zanzibar becomes an end node that can't be pulled out of for all the trade from Aden and India so you choke off the Mamluks while being allied to them and conquering India. The better one is controlling the Ivory Coast so that Cape bcomes an end node to the trade from Zanzibar/Ceylon/Malacca to China/Mexico/etc. You dont need every province there just eat Benin, Jolof and Mali's coast and colonize the centers of trade. Let the europeans pull all the trade they can out of the Ivory Coast and colonize all the low dev american lands for colonies while you control everything to the east so they buy all their spices from you. 😎

Is there something about paying off loans I don't know? I don't understand why you take 1% loans just to pay off 4% loans. That would make sense if you saved money on interest, but when you pay off loans early, you have to pay all the interest right away that you'd pay later if you kept the loan. So you're really turning 4% into 5%, not into 1%. In addition to the inflation hit and the mercantilism hit for the burgher loans. It's different if you have to reduce your number of loans to avoid bankruptcy, but the way you play, bankruptcy isn't an issue. So what am I missing?
@KarmaBandit Жыл бұрын
Huh, I think you're right. I didn't realize that you pay back all the future interest. I certainly do it all the time, because it often appears to make my monthly income increase-- but I'm not thinking about my total debt correctly. There might be something to be said about repackaging many loans into fewer ones if you are unlikely to be able to repay them later, since you take a fixed hit to inflation per loan. But, otherwise, I think your math checks out.

Ludi, the Dahomey kingdom was not the biggest slave kingdom in the 19th century, that would be the Sokoto caliphate, but if it isn't restricted to kingdom, it would be the American South, the American south had 4 million slaves, whereas the Sokoto caliphate had 1.5 million, but, interestingly enough the country that had the most slaves in history, was Nazi Germany, which at one point had about 10 million people enslaved in Europe. Also, the British Empire are never the good guys, they killed 165 million people in India, simply in service of profit, also they were the biggest profiteers from slavery, so when they are painted as the good guys, let's just say, it is an incredibly simple view of history, as without slavery, there would be no industrial revolution, as, while fighting slavery, the British were the biggest importers of cotton from the slave owning American South. Abolishing slavery in this case, is simply the excuse they used to go in, and seize the country and turn it into a colony for the benefit of the British. For example, King Leopold of Belgium used slavery in Africa as an excuse to take over the Congo, and over a 40 year period, Belgium reduced the population of the Congo by half, and killed 10 million people. That's on par with the transatlantic slave trade to put that into perspective, as over a 400 year period, 12 million Africans were taken to North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, it's also on par with the Holocaust as the Nazis killed 12-15 million people in the Holocaust (about 6 million were Jews). I really tried to not write a long paragraph, oh well.
@samalliston3094 Жыл бұрын
Who ever said the British were the 'good guys'? You are using a false equivalence, as the horrors of the British Empire does not excuse the the treatment of the slaves by the African kingdoms. Whilst the British Empire morals should be scrutinised, you cannot deny the British Empire went against the societal norms of the time to eradicate slavery, even at tremendous cost and manpower to themselves.
