Tarantism is a form of hysteric behavior, popularly believed to result from the bite of the wolf spider Lycosa tarantula, although no link between such bites and tarantism has ever been demonstrated. The term is historically used to refer to a dancing mania, characteristic of southern Italy, which supposedly cured such bites with a complex mix of fast-paced music and hysterical dances. In reality, this was a way for Italian women to vent their pent-up anger towards the extremely male-dominated world of the time, in which they weren't able to freely express themselves.

For who's asking about the footage. The mounters actually made a "good" job in taking two different documentaries about two (almost) completely different culture-bound syndromes that had been afflicting Salento, my land, for millennia. The main footage - and most famous - put in the cauldron is Gianfranco Mingozzi's "La Taranta", made in 1962 to document the phenomenon of Tarantismo that was, as we all know nowadays, an ethnic disease modulated on the symptoms of actual latrodectism. To heal which, "sounds were called" (itinerant bands of professionals) to "explore the Taranta" (understand which kind of spider bit the woman) and to perform the right tune for the right variant of Taranta. Tune that would click with the victim's subconscious, and scazzicarla - ie "unleash", "startle" the Taranta that took possession of her presence, and to dance her way out of her victim. The main "centre", or pilgrimage destination for healing of tarantismo was the city of Galatina and the Chapel of St. Paul (saint protector against snake and scorpion's venoms). Ernesto De Martino's La terra del rimorso is the most famous book, from the most famous Italian anthropologist and religion historian that in his fieldwork in Salento in 1959 finally recognised the aforementioned as an ethnic disease, and not as mere superstition or worse, mental illness. This footage is recognisable mainly for the instrument players in it. And anyways, you easily find on KZbin yourselves if you're interested in it. The other footage is Luigi Di Gianni's "Il Male di san Donato", made in 1965 always in Salento to document another culture-bound syndrome called, as a matter of fact, Male di san Donato ("evil of saint Donatus"), this one modulated on the actual symptoms of epilepsy. Although visually these two syndromes would seem very similar, especially if mounted like this, they were in fact a great deal different in some key aspects. For example the male di san Donato couldn't be cured with any of musical exorcism or instrument of sort. The main town of interest for the people afflicted by it would have been Montesano Salentino and its Chapel of San Donato, right on the outskirts of the settlement, where the cemetery is nowadays. People affected by it would "just" need to come for the Saint's feast every 6th of August and sleep for the night in or near his tiny Chapel, keeping alive a Southern Christian variant of the ancient practice of incubatio in Pagan times, the practice to pilgrimage to say, Epidaurus Asklepeion and to sleep inside the god's abakon hoping to receive him in dream. The male di san Donato has not been studied really by anyone except for a few mentions you can find here and there in psychological literature, hence the difficulties in my work of reconstruction with a next-to-zero bibliography. Were these two different culture-bound syndromes just two branches of healing stemmed from the same old Maenadic trunk that De Martino identified in his inqury? Was male di san Donato a more recent, local variant of the much wider, pan-Southern phenomenon of tarantismo, popped up just in Montesano Salentino? We can't really answer these questions, yet. For anyone interested, you can contact me. I'm Lorenzo Belmonte, wannabe cultural anthropologist and I analysed and conducted my fieldwork research in Montesano Salentino between 2014 and 2015 for my bachelor dissertation on il male di San Donato. Were you be interested in reading it, I'll gladly send you a copy (sadly, only in Italian). Just comment down here.

Hello Lorenzo, thanks a lot for the comment you left, it has been quite useful. I also deepened those traditions in the past; would you agree to the fact that tarantismo is also strictly connected to the strong patriarchal structure of those families in the past? I had the opportunity to join a conference in which it has been explained that the spider etc was just a way to justify events of hysteria that those women were facing due to the pressure in which they lived (that's why usually women were part of tarantismo). Thanks a lot for your comment here!

If it's Taranta give it a colour If it's Taranta give it a colour Even if you do nothing Even if you do nothing Even if you do nothing it starts If it's Taranta it drives you so much If it's Taranta it drives you so much That hours go by That hours go by That hours go by and you don't even notice If it's Taranta you can't stop (dancing) If it's Taranta you can't stop (dancing) Only litanies Only litanies Only litanies I'll have to sing If it's Taranta you can't betray it (her) If it's Taranta you can't betray it (her) It goes through your soul It goes through your soul It goes through your soul and your heart (too) If it's Taranta give it a colour If it's Taranta give it a colour Even if you do nothing Even if you do nothing Even if you do nothing it starts If it's Taranta it drives you so much If it's Taranta it drives you so much That hours go by That hours go by That hours go by and you don't even notice If it's Taranta you can't stop (dancing) If it's Taranta you can't stop (dancing) Only litanies Only litanies Only litanies I'll have to sing If it's Taranta you can't betray it (her) If it's Taranta you can't betray it (her) It goes through your soul It goes through your soul It goes through your soul and your heart (too) If it's Taranta just let it dance If it's Taranta just let it dance If it's melancholy If it's melancholy If it's melancholy just let it out If it's Taranta just let it dance If it's Taranta just let it dance If it's melancholy If it's melancholy If it's melancholy just let it out

I love this, I love Taranta, but why are the recordings of such a bad quality. I went out to search high and low to find the cd and buy it, because iTunes is just bad quality and to my surprise, the recording on the CD is of inferior quality. So many people worked their ass off to create this beautiful piece of music. That seems like a total waste of energy, when you hear this recording back on a big sound system. i was crying. Luckily it is great on headphones, but that is also a minor experience. I want to feel the music. You don't listen only with your ears, you listen with your whole body.

Could anyone please translate the lyrics, or knows the language in which they sing? I can only find online the original one and Google Translate doesn't help that much :/ I would love to know what it says.

+Myrsini Kalivioti +Ana E. Barragán Martínez Ci è Taranta dagni nu culore (If she is affected by the Taranta give her a color...more like "give her expressiveness" or "let her express her feelings/emotions") Ca senza nulla faci scazzicare (because it takes nothing to let you incite/inflame) Ci è Taranta tantu ca te tene (if she is affected by the Taranta so much that the dance can't let you go away) Ca passanu le ure tutte pare (so much that you can't understand the passing of time) Ci è Taranta nutte poi fermare (if she is affected by the Taranta she can't stop) Solo litanie aggiu cantare (I can only sing songs/"litanies") Ci è Taranta nulla poi tradire (if she is affected by the Taranta she can't lie about it) Ca te trapassa l'anima e lu core (because it pierce the soul and the heart) Ci è Taranta lassala ballare (if she is affected by the Taranta let her dance) Ci è Malincunìa càcciala fore (if it is melancholy/sadness throw these feelings out...more like "let these feelings go away") It's very difficult to do a proper translation. I've tried but I think I'm not satisfied :)

+Heive7 Thank you thank you thank you! Don't worry about how the translation came out, it's perfect! I've been trying to understand what it meant through other versions that have a translation, but not all the words were there, you just made my week (and month though, I was losing hope). Thanks again for taking the time and effort, it's truly mesmerizing.

It's the ancient dancing tradition of south italy (in particular Salento). The nevrotic woman dancing is allegorically "bitten"by a Tarantula, the spider that dwells into the ground while the women are working. When a woman went mad they sayed that she was bitten by a spider but the musicians asked her the colour of it (ci è taranta tanni nu culore/ca senza nu la faci scazzecare- If it was a Tarantula give us its colour/ or we cannot let it move away from you"). Infact the ritual was about singing and playing various instrument around the mad woman in order to let her dance, freeing herself from her madness, and the spider, that "passes from the soul to the heart" (ca te trapassa l'anima e lu core). In reality, the mad woman is nothing more than a desperate soul that daily fights against starving, moral issues and faces a patriarcal way of living, doomed to bore child and be respectful to her father/husband. In this way this dance is way more complex , and we can find its origins into the first dionysian feast, celebrating the power of the instinct and rebellion.
